Discuss The USC-Stanford/My Reaction

That was a looong second half.

What did we learn? USC can put the hammer on a defense that is still learning a new system and only its second game with new coaching staff.

I think we are seeing that MarShawn Lloyd is becoming the go-to back. And Caleb Williams is spreading the ball around so much you can’t really focus on one receiver.

What did we learn about the defense? Well, Stanford seemed incapable of completing a forward pass.

But the USC run defense showed some weaknesses that were apparent against San Jose State. USC also had six penalties on defense. That’s not good for future games. There were quite a few open receivers too but Stanford couldn’t the ball to them. They need Elijah Brown from Mater Dei now. And maybe Raleek Brown too.

OK, the easy, easy part of the schedule is over. USC plays Arizona State in two weeks and then the much-anticipated Colorado game.

Lincoln Riley might blow a gasket in Boulder based on the way he overreacted tonight.

  1. When you are behind 49-3 and you are running up the middle on every play, you’re not really trying to win the game. You just want to hold on to the ball so it doesn’t get any worst. That what was going on in the early 3rd quarter which tells me that they had already given up trying to stop SC’s offense. They just wanted to get beat 49-3 rather than 80-3.

      1. They were just trying to make sure they hold SC under 80 which SC would have scored if they had kept their starters in there. I’m glad they didn’t. I don’t want to see any more injuries.

      1. Lincoln thinks by screaming at the refs now he can shame them into calling a legit game down the road. But that is not the way it’s gonna work. Their world has been turned upside down by USC. They will be making baseless holding calls & weird “delay of game on the defense ” calls all season…

    1. agree 100% on that. the Pac-12 refs are angry that they are losing their jobs and want to take it out on usc. riley is not going to take it passively, he has seen enough of this crap. there are so many grifters in the Pac-12, people who deserve no job because they suck, yet they lived well for many years off the stupid decisions of people like the ASU president

      1. Folt should have thought about the built-in conflict of being officiated by the organization you destroyed and tried to negotiate a deal with the Pac 12 [commission and opposing teams] in which USC would PAY for outside refs in each of it’s games. The negotiations would have gone nowhere fast & raised vitriolic replies from the Pac 12— but it would strengthen our position when we bitch about the officiating now.

      3. Bad Calls. That’s about the only way they are going to stop this USC offense. They did it last year in one game but this is a much better offense.

    2. Also, MG since when has it been a delay of game to point out an obvious movement in the opposing line? I can’t find a rule that fits, but the refs gave them 5 free yards

    3. That’s why you boat race every team you play, and then you don’t have to worry about it. That’s what LR goal should be for every game. Don’t let the PAC 12 refs hose your team. Keep your foot on the gas Fight on.

    4. Some of the holding calls that they called on SC looked to me to actually be holding. But I saw a number of times where Stanford was clearly holding and the official was right there. I don’t know how he could not saw it but there was no call.

  3. Bear Williams was great. Caleb is a master. Miller Miss is better than anyone on the three teams we’ve seen by far. The running game on offense was brilliant and brutal at times.
When Caleb hit Rice for a 75 yard touchdown, he threw the ball from his own 16 yard line to Rice running full speed at the Stanford 19. That’s 65 yards in the air. On a dime.
The defense was better, great even, in the first half, but sloppy in the second half.
It looked like the Stanford QB had his knee down before he reached out to put the ball in the end zone. It was hard to tell, because there’s a big pile up of bodies and legs, but I think his knee was down and in fact he had a defensive player on the back of his legs.
A play was waived off because of the idiot DJ playing music. They should get rid of that whole thing. It’s terrible for the game and it takes the crowd out. It’s impossible to even talk to the people next to you because they are always blaring the loudest crap music. My goodness, is that what they think helps people enjoy the game. When I go, I’m watching the game, enjoying the marching band. But that DJ crap just destroys the whole show.

  4. Am I the only regular poster who goes to the games?

Best USC offense since 2003 to 2006.

Caleb is best college QB I have seen in my 40 years of going to Coliseum.
Not even close. Better than Aikman, Brees and Rodgers. Saw these three HOFs / future HOFs play USC.

Defense is fine. DLine much improved. Special teams is really special.

Atmosphere is great. Nice mixture of us baby boomers and atudents.

DJ does not bother me. Drone light show at halftime was fantastic.

    Met Tyreek Hill too.

  5. Wolf, a real piece of work. Arizona St lost to Oklahoma St. and that’s supposed to be a test? The way Riley is chewing out people, there will be no slacking off during games this year.

How bad are the refs? They called pass interference on two players involved in the same action on opposite sides. Just put your stupid flag in your nuts and stop trying to be involved in the game.

  7. This is the first game I’ve seen this year and I saw the first half only, the rest was going to be a shit show anyway.

    Williams is great
    The RB’s were great
    The WR’s were great
    The OL blocked, a plus
The DL was active, mobile and got pressure
    The LB’s looked fine
The DB’s looked better than they have, still give up big pass plays
Branch is a STUD on special teams

Wolf is right, the easy part of the schedule is over, now they will play teams with better talent, how much better is yet to be seen. I think Colorado will give SC trouble, game might end up 99-98.

Oregon almost lost to a Texas Tech team that LOST to Wyoming the week before.
ucla will be better than people think
UDUb & Wazzu will be good
Aranda is not head coaching material
The shine is off Bama, they are no longer the bully of college football
The Big 10 aside from PSU, OSU and Michigan is VASTLY overrated
The Boise State bandwagon got another flat yesterday.

  8. Stanford is “out of our lives for good,” pointedly writes ’49

‘Wiles’ ugly tantrums are not very becoming of a head coach

Have never before seen a quarterback racing down-field to block

My favorite ‘Celeb’ play was his buying 6-seconds and then lasering a touchdown pass

Is ‘Celeb’ trying to avoid a massive wideout Portal transfer by spreading the ball around?

When the defense got an early interception what was with the ensemble pantomiming a chorus and getting 15-yards? This is SC!

    1. Small correction, pardner —Caleb was racing down field THINKING about blocking. Sam ran down field a few times and actually blocked someone. [Also — Caleb is super tough at taking hits —-but he slides awkwardly. I think he has more chance getting hurt on a slide than a tackle].
Couldn’t agree with you more on the dumbfuck celebration in the endzone. Hope they got that outta their system.

      1. There should be some concern about whether this early schedule of horrible teams is preparing the SC boys for the big-time

My wife, who is a marginal fan, did not like Wiley losing it for the second week in a row. Yes, Coach McKay also had an ugly temper
but he was not demonstrative like that when he got mad. You can best get the refs’ attention by calmly telling them, “Did you even go to referee school?’

Was forced to watch the Texas Tech-Webfoots game as the end coincided with SC’s beginning, and it was the best game of the day

When SC got to 48 I thought of McKay and was clamoring the team to go for ‘2’ to set an SC record for a half (1974 SC scored 49 on ND)

  10. The one concerning part of this game was the lack of depth on the offensive side of the ball. Our 2 deep should be better than Stanford any day. Why does the whole offense seem to change when Moss is is the game? It feels so generic when he is in there. They stop using their speed to the perimeter.

I had thought that Riley could win even with Moss, but got to say that this team without Caleb doesnt look special. If Moss wanted to be the starter next year, this was not a good audition.

I need to watch the game over again to make sure this is true, but it seems to me nearly every big play the defense allowed was a linebacker problem. Curtis is still just running around out there.

    1. There is serious lack of depth on BOTH sides of the ball –notice how easy it was for Stanford to run the sweep to the left in the second half?

    2. Remember with Moss in the game, the #2 team comes with him, and then there is the fact that they have 49 on the board already. But you are right, it does look generic, as would anyone who isn’t named Caleb.

  11. Predictions for Scott Wolf’s “Monday Morning” grades–
Quarterback– A- like Michael Guarino says, and Guarino is the only Poster I read because he is the only one who says nice things about me, “The guy can’t slide”
Rest of the offense– B (Celeb makes them look good versus Moss)
    Defense– C- for choreographed dancing

    1. I agree Tim.

TCU lost a ton of players to NFL and I think everything just clicked with a bit of a Cinderella season last year before losing by 60 to Georgia.

Nebraska had so many unforced errors and the QB looked like a 3rd stringer taking his first snap. Huskers looked up to the task but couldn’t keep defense off field due to TO’s and stupid mistakes.

WTBS, Colorado has played 100x better than I imagined. A fluke? We’ll find out in 2-3 weeks.
Even if the luster comes off over the season, still shocked how Colorado, Deion & staff have performed.

  14. 2 games into the season, USC has 3, evaluations should be complete on every player on the team. Everyone should know that week 4 the season gets serious, and the players that have showed the most will be the ones to carry the banner. USC is going to have a few competitive games along the way with the Pac reigning over the nation as it is now. Playoffs will come if USC stays focused on one at a time, and after this gauntlet to get there, the playoffs should go well.

    1. Tim, the 1st quarter and a half. Nebraska looked evenly matched with Colorado but again, they lost 3 fumbles, penalties and horrific QB play caused the game to turn sideways. Not saying Colorado wasn’t gonna win but at that time they looked evenly matched. Defense couldn’t get off field and went downhill fast.
Before season started, I would’ve expected Colorado to play like Nebraska played on Saturday. Expected a little more from Rhule (thought he would’ve been a great option before LR landed in our lap), they looked like they skipped spring practice this year. It was pretty embarrassing.
