USC Notes: Lincoln Riley Highlights Downside Of Portal

Lincoln Riley, who is the master of transfer portal, highlighted the drawbacks of the portal in his highly publicized recent interview:

“Well, I think right now, it’s just the cool, easy idea to do. But you also see the thousands of guys in the portal right now that don’t have a home, that left a home and a scholarship that they had. You see a lot of guys that are going places and not graduating. And for every good story right now, there’s probably two or three that are not successful.”

I bet some of the USC players who Riley told to leave the program after he was hired would like to comment on the difficulties of finding another school.

  • USC ranks 56th nationally in plays per minute. The Trojans average 2.32 plays per minute. I would have guessed USC would rank higher.

The fastest team so far this season is UCLA at 2.56 plays per minute (16th nationally). Colorado is 29th at 2.47 (29th nationally).

USC does have the nation’s highest-graded offense (92.5) according to Pro Football Focus.

  • The Pitt-Cincinnati game on The CW last weekend drew 617,000 average viewers. The Maryland-Charlotte game on NBC averaged 665,000 viewers. The CW game actually drew more viewers in the 18-49 demo.

Remember, Pac-12 Network games don’t even get rated. The Pac-12 should have tried to get some type of deal with the CW.

  1. Sorry for being such a dick and for my homophobic rants. I probably don’t need to remind you but I often project my homosexual insecurities on this blog.

  2. The picture that’s about to surface that purportedly shows Lincoln Riley kissing another man, is it Alex Grinch or someone else.

That’s the downside to life in L.A. the paparazzi are everywhere

  3. that highest graded offense includes Miller Moss time. the rating for when Caleb is QB would be even higher.

although we have not yet seen this team up against a good defense, we also have not seen everything this offense is capable of.

  4. Many of these Portal transfer guys are there involuntarily as Wiles and ‘Neon’ cleaned house “for the good of the team” (and their contracts).
Much as pawns sacrificed on a chess board these are I’m sure mostly good kids who have been taken to the ‘slaughter-house’

  5. Scooter,

You have not written on how SC’s defense has improved. I believe it has. However, more impressive is how Grinch tells the truth on thd defense is doing and how he holds himself accountable. He is starting to turn me into seeing him do well.

  6. Truth be told, universities award scholarships are on a yearly basis. It can only be renewed by the coach and athletic departments provided you fulfill the coaches expectation and has no academic or conduct issues. So is that Riley’s fault that he “asked them to leave” or is this a bigger systemic issue. Is it Deion sanders fault that he replaced most of his roster or is it the system for letting him do it. Gotta read between the lines and get at the REAL TRUTH!

  7. I can see the point Riley made, that kids threw away an education for the sake of a game. What he is bringing in through the portal are quality guys that want a change. A kid with a .700 rating has no business going in to the portal. A .90 does.

  8. I looked up player stats for USC and it is interesting…

    Top tacklers…

    Jaylin Smith 20
    Shane Lee 12
    Calen Bullock 12
    Domani Jackson 11
    Bryson Shaw 10
    Max Williams 9
    Solomon Byrd 8
    Zion Branch 7

on a normal defense, the linebackers should be among the top tacklers, but Tackett, Raesjon, Cobb and Gentry are not even close. Maybe Cobb and Gentry have an excuse based on playing time.

    1. What I keep hearing is that each player in the front 6 has a “lane”. Grinch’s defense keeps the linebackers in specific places on each play. Not sure if they do anything zone anymore. It seems our cornors are in man to man and left to sink or swim. Safeties are more to roam, come up and make the tackles. That worries me because there is nobody behind them.
