Lincoln Riley Bans Reporter For Two Weeks

I’ve talked about Lincoln Riley having a strange demeanor this season, whether reading a weird prepared statement after a game or berating officials every week.

Now another example: He banned reporter Luca Evans from covering USC for 2 weeks for the following injustices:

  1. He reported on a conversation two players had while preparing to talk to the media.
  2. He asked a question when a press conference concluded.
  3. He spoke to players/coaches in an area that wasn’t designated for media availabilities.

Keep in mind the story Evans wrote that led to the suspension was a positive piece on tailback Quentin Joyner overcoming his shyness.

It’s ridiculous to make a big deal out of asking a question after a press conference concluded. If a reporter observes players talking in front of him, there’s nothing wrong with using that. If Evans talked to players/coaches somewhere that wasn’t allowed, then USC should talk to him and his editors and fix it.

But a two-week suspension? Talk about an overeaction.

Here’s the worst part: Jen Cohen did not stand up to Riley. She went along with it. Here is her statement.

“As an institution, USC prides itself on treating the media as a respected partner and key constituent. We understand the responsibility of reporters is to fairly and objectively cover stories, news events, and their respective beats. As you know, our media policies exist to protect our student-athletes and promote a culture of trust that is critical to building successful programs.

“After careful consideration and in alignment with the sentiment above, USC supports the football program’s decision regarding Luca’s two-week suspension. We recognize this may be disappointing, but we hope you can understand the need to enforce our media policies as we strive to create a positive and comfortable environment for our players and coaches.”

At least when I got banned, Pat Haden ordered Lane Kiffin to reverse the decision.

Now there is no one to check Riley. He does whatever he wants.

    1. Exactly. I am guessing every program has the same rules about when and where the press can speak to players and coaching staff. The reporter had been warned once, after that, the rules have to be enforced.

Do you think is it journalistically ethical to listen in on a conversation between two players – who do not know they are being listened in on – and then reporting that in the paper?
