Morning Buzz: Does USC Offense Have Weak Spot?

With USC three games into the season, I checked in with a Pac-12 head coach for some views on the Trojans’ offense.

“I think they are better from a receiver standpoint than last season,” the coach said. “Their slot receivers are really good (Zacariah Branch, Mario Williams, Tahj Washington).”

Where is there a weakness?

“Their (offensive) guards are not great,” the coach said. “That’s a problem spot. The interior line is where you can put some pressure on (Caleb) Williams.”

Will it matter against Arizona State?

“No,” the coach said. “But the schedule gets tougher.”

  1. Is poor guard play and an average secondary SC’s achilles heel?

    SC bettors have driven up the point spread to 35 which is a little like taking the lions over the Christians

    2. as far as guard play, yea, i agree that is the weakness, but Pregnon is just young, he will get better as season progresses and also made a move from right to left guard position. kingston is probably the weak link. i think that they will continue to get playing time for Murphy and Noa and Paige and that by season end, there might be a different front line. If Paige could perform at left tackle, Monheim could move to inside right guard. Could Noa take over left guard and let Pregnon move back to right guard.

      my bet is that kingston knows he is under the gun. this is his last year before the draft, so he needs to step it up.

        Speaking of scores, USC beat the vaunted U Clowns Lose Again women’s volleyball team last night in conference play by the score 3 -2. SC is 1-0 in conference play and in second place while the U Clowns Lose Again are in their normal place in rankings and that is in last place. I know you are glad to hear that.

  4. The growth of the offensive line may be an advantage of the unbalanced schedule. I believe Pregnon and Kingston are talented guards and hopefully they can pull it together before the tough stretch of games come in the last half of the season.

    1. I think Scott made an accurate observation. Coach Henson has criticized both Pregnon and Kingston’s blocking techniques. He said that he had to switch Pregnon to the other side of the line to help break some of his bad habits. Kingston acknowledged that he did not have much experience with run blocking given that WSU rarely ran the ball. Perhaps this is why Alana Noa, a freshman, and Quinones started over these two transfers. But Henson also stated that both of them were talented and were improving so maybe they will be good when it matters.

If there is a tiny wrinkle somewhere on the USC team, Wolf will try to exploit it to continue his stupid negative schtick. Those guards are quality players, so lets see what they do in future games and what their PFF grades are.

    2. the HC didnt say that those players were trash, he said they were the weakness of the offense, which is true. we have not yet seen a really great d-line play against USC and quite frankly, the o-line still had lots of break-downs. this might be early season stuff.

      this is the difference between the Helton era and the Riley era, we arent just looking for OK, it needs to be championship level or it needs to be fixed.

    Line play will be critical later this year. When the play nutre dumb, wash., whoregon, utes, and the ruins of ugly, sometimes you will want to run the ball for ball control. Guards and center are very important for this. We will see if they improve

I think if the play of the guards is the biggest issue with the #1 offense in college football, then that is a lame thing for this Head Coach to focus on because he doesn’t have Bear Alexander on his team. No one in the Pac 12ed does. Makes you wonder what this attempt at finding a flaw in the Mona Lisa is really about.

    If I were Phil Knight, then I’d ask why a defensive star like Dan Lanning has the 42nd rated defense in the country (as rated by ESPN SP+) with all the talent that they’ve bought. Roderick Pleasant gets no run and 5 four-star rated freshmen transferred out after last season. What gives?
