USC Morning Buzz: What Is Going On With Arizona State?

What kind of strength program is Kenny Dillingham running at Arizona State?

There are 12 players on the injury list after only three games and the Sun Devils played Southern Utah, Oklahoma State and Fresno State. That’s a better schedule than USC but it’s not like they played Utah or some other teams known for their physicality.

Does it ultimately matter if USC is a 34.5-point favorite? No. But the ASU program is about more than one game vs. a heavily favored opponent and players are dropping left and right because of injuries. Imagine USC being down to its No. 4 QB in a game like the Sun Devils were last week.

I think Dillingham just kept Herm Edwards’ strength coach. Usually, a new coach fires the strength coach almost immediately. I don’t get it.

Dillingham has a lot to prove and already the program looks in disarray after three games with the fate of offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin under serious review. Again, after just three games.

Did ASU interview anyone besides Dillingham?

Herm Edwards was on Dan Patrick yesterday morning talking about Deon Sanders and his future at CO and whether he (Sanders) was headed to the NFL As has been said about others moving on to the NFL, Edward’s doubts Sanders goes to the NFL because professional athletes are grown men i.e. aren’t motivated by ‘rah rah’ speeches. Nonetheless he feels Sanders has given the rest of college programs in search of a way to resurrect themselves a blueprint to copy kind of like that crazy but unnerving defense the NE Patriots unveiled last weekend on that FG attempt by MIA.

    USC more than covers but be interesting to see how CO and Ucla fare at both UT and OR today as well as that ‘…and then there were two….’ match-up of OR St. @ WA St..

  3. Since there is a ton of gambling money being thrown at SC and the current 35-point spread with most Trojans believing this game is a lock, the only thing the ‘Devils will try to do is ‘beat the spread’ for their loyal fans, say, 49-17

    1. A lot of people are forgetting it’s not simply about USC and Arizona State today. The Pac 12 has injected one more factor into things: its officials. Scores can be somewhat controlled by penalties called on the first play of a drive —first and 25 is tough on any team, with or without Caleb. Allowing interference to go unchecked kills drives too. Allowing USC opponents to get away with holding helps sustain drives for scores against us.
      Look for some of this today. Look for LOTS of it next week at Boulder, Colorado.

  4. Hey it’s GAME DAY! Maybe I am too ambitious to hope that we can stick to football, but optimism has always been a fault of mine. The Sun Devils have had a tough time lately and they still have a fantastic fan base and they still have some great athletes. It’s one of the most fun places to go for a road trip and I wish I could be there. So for the SC folks who made the journey, please enjoy yourselves and exhibit at least some semblance of grace as we thrash Arizona State and light them up! After all, winning is great, but winning with Respect, Humility and Honor is even better…

      1. At 42-0, I would rather see SC’s reserves in there. Why take a chance of losing players to injury. But, they still have to run their offense and not just hand the ball to the running back to run up the middle on every play.
