My Reaction On USC’s “Performance” At ASU

So where are all the people who insisted the defense was much better?

I hope they all watched that debacle in the desert Saturday night because USC let a 34.5-point underdog play with it for four quarters.

I don’t know where to start. I did reference the USC interior offensive linemen twice during the week as a weak spot and they had four penalties. Plus, they let the ASU defense harrass Caleb Williams.

USC also had its customary 10 penalties. Asked what he attributed it to, Lincoln Riley said, “Shitty coaching.”

I finally agree with Riley!

Riley’s arrogance to not kick a field goal with a 27-21 lead would have backfired if Arizona State had a serviceable quarterback.

Now, the defense: Is Riley just incapable of fielding good defenses? USC can’t stop the run, letting Cameron Skattebo look like John Riggins (there’s one for the kids).

It sure looked like Domani Jackson was a non-factor and Ceyair Wright struggled. Have the coaches had enough? I’ve harped on this for months but what do I know? I’m not the fanboy media.

I shudder to think what would have happened if USC played in Eugene, Ore., instead of Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday night.

What has Alex Grinch done to make USC better? He just blitzes.

But good news. Tim Brando is a believer!

We definitely need to clean up a lot of things’ efficiency on offense, better attention to detail, settle on the players who gives us the best chance to win on both sides of the ball Can the assistant manage the offensive and defensive signals without the players looking confused before the snap of the ball. We give up too many run or pass plays where we are moving out of position to make the simple tackle. Hey LR watch film of the top 10 defenses see if they are moving around before the snap. It’s great Caleb spreads the ball around but now he knows he has to get Branch Rice Washington the ball when the game is on the line. Start targeting them more and we will be more efficient. Now it’s becoming an issue with being in sync with too many receivers. Now lets get back to our real game

    1. Thank you CR Smith. You always provide good supporting documentation that is most often very accurate. This certainly was. I remember the Pete Carroll days and how many times they lost or nearly lost to inferior teams because they didn’t take them seriously until they were getting beaten. Last night’s Trojans looked unprepared, inept and confused. They were totally unprepared for the onside kick, for example. i don’t know what they did on their week off, but hope their near loss will help them to focus more this week. Colorado took a whipping from Oregon AT OREGON which is the hell hole of the former Pac12. Oregon has a defense. What will SC offer??? They will also be at elevation and tire easier. it’s not a cake walk. I hope they make some changes……like getting a defensive coordinator and a special teams coach.

  3. Can’t believe Mario Williams isn’t further down the depth chart- (stone hands.) Looked like a Clay Helton defense last night -It was embarrassing to see how they fell for the screen pass (nobody home on that one.) How come they don’t send Zachariah on more fly patterns? It might do more to get others open. As for Wazzu vs. OSU – June Cleaver would say, “Ward (Cameron) was a little hard on the Beaver(s) last night.” P.S. Oregon and Washington are way better than The Trojans -if I didn’t say it, I’d be a fanboy.

      P.S.
      Mario has been a serious disappointment since before [and certainly during and after] the Tulane game —let him transfer. He lacks the mental toughness to be counted on when the going gets tough.

Honestly, while we have a good team, we are missing too many key pieces ( not enough angry O lineman, LB’s that play downhill, hard hitting safeties, and CB’s that can tackle in space) to feel like we have a true shot at a deep run in the playoffs- if we even get there.

  4. Lincoln Riley is a good coach, not a great coach, and a definite upgrade over Clay Helton. But from the outset I questioned the decision to keep any of the coaches from the Helton regime, especially Donte Williams, who has proven time and again that he’s nothing but a snake oil salesman. Ask yourself, has any DB under his tutelage improved during their time at USC? A far as Alex Grinch, and the rest of the defensive staff, great coach would never tolerate this level of unsatisfactory performance over an extended period of time. If the Tulane debacle in the Cotton Bowl was not enough of a wakeup call for CLR regarding the defense, then nothing is. Fortunately, Caleb Williams covers up for a lot of deficiencies on the offensive line and the defense. Caleb Williams is a generational talent at QB and it looks like his talent is going to wasted when USC does not qualify for the CFP this season.

  5. Hal after this showing last night I have to agree. Schematically we need to go to a base defense where the players are read then react. We have to improve in so many areas it’s pathetic. We had two weeks to work on our weaknesses but yet they do the same thing every week. Insanity LR get rid of Grinchy Manning Williams Nua real fast they are killing us. We need a DC from the Big 10 . Look at Wisc, Iowa, Mich Penn St? If we don’t we will never be at the elite.

      1. We need to do like NFL NBA MLB organizations we are moving to Big so we need to poach someone off those teams I mentioned, they are very discplined n play hard nose physical defense. Wisc Iowa have 3 star across their defense. If we had better coaches we wouldn’t feel like this after each game. MG, hopefully each player will dedicate themselves to trust their instincts n talent instead of their coaches wack techniques..

        The BIG 10, aside from OSU, Michigan & PSU SUCKS. But……….. with Oregon & Washington ( who has a very good coach ) going to the Big 10, USC will probably get to see them every year instead of here and there, not good for Riley, he may just retire.

    USC possibly loses 5 or their last 6 games, 2-3 maybe blowout loses, FACT

  8. Us fanboys didn’t enjoy this game at all. To say you were right all along I am sure is what you are reaching out for. Can’t do it. I do agree that Grinch is WAY OVER SCHEMING the defense. I give you the end of the 4th quarter, no scheming, just kick ass and rush. Bingo, sack after sack. What did they do different? Us fanboys like to think that there is always a reason. Grinch is the reason. Teams with much lesser talent play better defense as a team. I give you Fresno. Nothing fancy, just kick ass hard nosed play. The offense struggled with communication, and Caleb needs to get his head on straight for the Colorado game. He is still taking to long with his reads.

  9. Were Scott Wolf and I the only ones who enjoyed the ASU game,
    but for a dichotomy of reasons with Wolf regaling in the negativity whereas I loved the drama. At 35-28 is the impossible possible?
    ASU has traditionally given SC trouble but if the ‘Devils had pulled off the upset last night it would have gone down
    in Pete Carroll’s Stanford loss lore

    So SC is not that good, well ND and Ohio St and Alabama didn’t look like great shakes either. This year’s champion will not remind anyone of the great Alabama teams of yesteryear

  14. “shitty coaching”

    that is the problem here.

    the #1 job of a head coach is to compete with other head coaches to hire the absolute best coaching staff possible. there is no more important job.

    the problem at USC can be boiled down to shitty coaches. the proof is that the more time the coaches have to prepare the team against an opponent, the worse they perform. when Grinch had a month to prepare for Tulane, our players played terribly. with a bye week, we do worse. good teams get better during the year and better with more coaching. bad teams regress the more they are confused by terrible coaching. that is what happens at USC.

    1. Half right. Players are still playing hard on offense. There were some mistakes but they never let down. Defense is a mixed bag — several missed tackles, corners getting lost. I can’t say the defense defense, as a whole, plays hard for Grinch. But I can say we have 4 or 5 potential stars on defense —in need of a coach.

    1. On a good day we can still outscore anybody. Caleb needs to drop all of the outside distractions that come with being a Celebrity and concentrate on being the best QB he can be for the next 3 months, IF we get to play that long. [Taking the clock down to zero on almost every snap cuz he’s changing the play or getting more shit advice from Kliff on the sidelines is gonna hurt us in the last 6 games]..

  17. USC had trouble with the crowd noise early in the game. That’s a coaching fail right there. They did fix it later but they should have anticipated it being their first road game in a hostile environment, albeit with a weaker opponent.
