Morning Buzz: USC-Arizona State Report Card

QUARTERBACK

It says something about Caleb Williams’ talent that he can complete 20 of 31 passes for 322 yards with three TDs and no interceptions and it feels like an ordinary performance. Williams was under pressure and threw some ill-advised passes. That will matter if it happens later in the season.

Grade: B

RUNNING BACK

An NFL scout at Saturday’s game told me MarShawn Lloyd is definitely an NFL running back. That’s what gaining 154 yards in 14 carries will do to convince people. There’s not really a rotation now. Lloyd is the guy.

Grade: A-

WIDE RECEIVER

Would this group be able to make a claim to being the best group in the nation if Caleb Williams wasn’t the QB? Brenden Rice has overcome his slow start but who else is flourishing? Tahj Washington caught one pass. Fortunately for him, it was a touchdown.

I don’t think Dorian Singer is being used properly. USC seems to try to shoehorn receivers into roles instead of exploiting their strengths. Mario Williams looks worse this season.

Grade: C+

OFFENSIVE LINE

The first road figured to be an experience even though this is a veteran group. Justin Dedich, a senior, had two penalties. Jarrett Kingston and Emmanuel Pregnon each had a penalty. One reason Caleb Williams struggled at times was pressure he was under.

Grade: C-

DEFENSIVE LINE

We’ve got a pattern here. Solomon Byrd makes plays. Bear Alexander disrupts. Jamil Muhammad does what the rush end should do (and Romello Height finally re-emerged vs. ASU). But then there is a dropoff among the transfers. Kyon Barrs did not make a tackle Saturday. Jack Sullivan hasn’t made a tackle all season. Anthony Lucas, the highly touted transfer from Texas A&M, is barely noticeable. It’s a mixed bag.

Grade: B-

LINEBACKER

Mason Cobb was on the field for 74 plays and made one tackle. It was his first game back since the season-opener but it was still a long night for him. Despite all the praise the coaches give this position, I can’t see anyone other Eric Gentry being a necessity. Is Gentry not healthy enough to play more than 28 snaps? That’s the only excuse because is under-utilized.

Grade: D

DEFENSIVE BACK

Christian Roland-Wallace is now the go-to cornerback, as I said when he transferred from Arizona. So why are these coaches so stubborn that it took until the fourth game to figure it out? Why did they try to make him a nickelback? Ceyair Wright had a rough game and I suspect his role could decrease. Domani Jackson was the invisible man.

Grade: D-

SPECIAL TEAMS

The fake punt was one of those signs that USC doesn’t always look serious when it comes to special teams. Arizona State is probably celebrating that it contained Zacariah Branch. Denis Lynch was 2 for 2 on field goals.

Grade: C

COACHING

Lincoln Riley sometimes appears to be in his own world, whether it’s unwavering support for Alex Grinch or refusing to kick a field goal with a 27-21 lead. You can add personnel decisions to the list and the questions on whether the defense has improved sufficiently? Also why does USC rank 128th out of 130 teams in penalty yards (86.75 ypg)? That’s a sign of bad coaching.

Grade: F

  1. Fair summation – this is what USC is under Lincoln Riley….a lot of talent but nothing seems coherent. The antics this past week with the reporter being banned, the need to tell why he (Riley) cannot park or drive himself, Carol Folt bluntly demanding she be addressed as ‘Doctor’ etc..

Riley needs to act like a mature male and accept he’s in a fishbowl with a XX million dollar home in the 2nd biggest city in the entire USA. Until you’ve run the table through for a national championship this is what the terrain looks like – win and stop acting the way Billy Martin and Mike Scoscia both did with Art Fowler and Mickey Hatcher (Alex Grinch).

The toughest part of this schedule is before us and it is brutal – make Grinch understand what is expected as well as yourself Riley.

      1. It looks like Scott is trying to send a message more than give a fair grade, pardner. The team took Arizona State lightly and almost got bit —they can’t afford to do that again —and Riley needs to know that [I realize he “knows” it —but he has to sell it to the players or they’ll get their ass kicked in those away games against Notre Dame & Oregon]…….

      2. The offense is coherent. It’s the defense that isn’t coherent. They have talent and they are putting the kind of pressure on the QB that they didn’t last year. The had 17 TFL and 10 sacks against ASU. They are definitely getting into the offensive backfield in a hurry. Where they are incoherent is that they are not disciplined to cover the gaps. Even the ASU head coach said in his post game presser that “this SC D-line is one of the better in the country and they are about 10 strong”. But the other teams will see that on tape and start getting rid of the ball in a hurry with screens, slants and other plays to cut down on that rush. SC’s defense gets sacks and TFL but they also give up quick passes that turn into big plays. The problem there is coaching. That’s on Grench. The one good thing about the ASU game was that they came out with no injuries.

    1. Defensive Line a B-?

      LOL!

The Ladies of Troy went up against a makeshift Sun Devil offensive line decimated by injury made up of 3rd and 4th string players and still they were able to help put up 28 pts.

No, the Ladies of Troy defensive line performed at a D grade level at best

  2. Most coaches would give the ball to their hot RB, but not Coach Pass Happy.

Riley is starting to look like a grumpier, skinnier version of Gomer. Won’t pound the rock, pass, pass and pass some more, OL can’t block, penalties all over the place, DB’s cover no one, playing defense is for other teams, special teams aren’t special, last six games will be interesting or brutal.

      1. One would ask why SC needs to have a ” big play ” to save itself when it’s pretty clear that they have a stud RB who can get them yards and run clock, oh wait, to Leach disciples that’s like showing Dracula the cross, you can’t run the ball and take time off the clock, how will we get 500 passing yards and 64 points… and a loss ?

      2. Riley’s mentality of “I can outscore any team, I don’t need much defense” caught up with him against Tulane and twice against Utah. He lost every CFP game because he couldn’t stop his opponent. If we played Oregon right now, they would win by double digits, I am serious. The pollsters know it also.

      3. Fixing the defense is a very easy thing to do. Bring in a great defensive co-ordinator. Coaches will come to SC under LR and SC’s tradition. Defensive players will come if you have a great defensive program. This is not rocket science or brain surgery.
Right now we have good players on defense who are performing well INDIVIDUALLY. But they don’t play together as a team.
I really doubt that Grench will be back next year. We’re about ready to start facing some great offenses. The Pac-12 is the best offensive conference in the country(especially when it comes to QB’s). The biggest problem on our defense is the secondary. I really think that this Grench defense will have problems once we start playing the good offenses. The USC world will scream bloody murder if we lose games because of Grenchs defenses and LR brings him back for another year.

      4. What the fuck are you talking about. You beat the good to great teams by shutting them down on defense. The “Big Play Potential ” is not the formula for winning a championship, it starts on the defensive side of the ball. Riley is the perfect example of what “Big Play Potential ” gets you in the biggest games, a big “L”.

      5. I agree with Nick Saban when he said “defense doesn’t win championships anymore….offense does”. The game has changed. The rules have been changed to favor the offense. But you still need a good defense.

      6. Have to agree. Riley is conflicted between (1) having the highest scoring offense ever, (2) snagging another Heisman for his QB and (3) winning football games.
Coach Riley: “We didn’t use Duce Robinson cuz only Miller Moss knows how to throw a pass to him. Miller wasn’t in the game so we had no choice but to keep Duce out too.”

Second, why would an anonymous IT professional come to the aide of Gabby. Why doesn’t the IT professional post under his own name. Third, and most telling, is Gabby’s reaction. His first comment about it was almost immediate and he states “there are 8 likes, that rarely happens.” Then he continues to post even though everyone else has seemed to move on from it. This is about his 15th re-post of Despicable Behavior. And the language of the post is similar to what Gabby likes to use. 6. Scooter,

SC gave up 90 yards rushing and had 8 sacks, and caused a least one fumble. I would give the dline at least a B+. However, the db’s did not take advantage of the run stop or pressure. They gave up big plays. The two missed tackles on the rb was horrible. Don’t the db coaches see the problems and why aren’t they fixing them? That part is not good.

  7. Last night I listened to a replay of College Football Sunday with Tom Luginbill and he made a couple of obvious points that for some reason CLR still refuses to acknowledge. One, CLR is stubborn beyond belief, views defense and special teams as auxiliary items in his program. It was the same thing that happened at OU. Two, the defense seems to be disorganized and players are not too sure as what they’re supposed to be doing on the field. If you watch USC pre-snap action, you have a lot of players running around constantly making checks. Along with the fact that USC’s defensive line does not line up properly leaving some gaping holes. Three, unless USC’s defense improves dramatically, especially stopping the run, they will finish the year with at least three losses. Three losses and a molly mediocre bowl game with a once in a generational QB.

Gabby has tried to have a conversation with you about the mechanics of football and you get lost in the terminology.

They play well individually but not as a team. They get into the offensive backfield in a hurry but they don’t cover their gaps and, as a result, they give up big plays. That’s coaching. I’d be shocked if Grench was back next year.

He doesn’t like the linebackers who are more instinctual, like Davis and Gentry. Of course, we get better results from linebackers who play instinctually, because that’s how you want good players to play and because Grinch’s scheme sucks.

This theory will gain confirmation if he continues to play Cobb and Curtis the most.

Alex Grinch should be criminally liable for his use of linebackers. Having Eric Gentry try to rush against an offensive lineman is ridiculous. Why could USC not get pressure on the QB with 4 rushers? Alot of times Gentry or Curtis were rushing the QB and left open wide swaths of the field that were exploited. Grinch seems to love linebackers that run around with their head cut off after the ball, rather than linebackers that cover the field and move once they know where to go.

Yes I’m going to say this Riley is a good coach, not great yet. You must put together a great staff in order to be great. Until Riley can listen to constructive criticism and make changes where they need to be we will be up in down. With that being said we won’t win the PAC CG or make the CFP. We are not a discplined team because our coaches are not discplined. When our coach grows up, then ours players will reach out potential. Carol Folt, Cohen pull Riley in your offices and let him know you are the bosses not him? Please set rules where everyone is on the same page, too many chiefs and not enough indians.
