USC Notes: Some Good And Bad From ASU

I spoke to an NFL scout who attended the USC-Arizona State game.

“USC’s receivers weren’t as impressive in person as on film,” he said. “Arizona State actually did a decent job covering them until Caleb Williams would start scrambling around.

“I like the defensive line. They have some good players. The problem with the defense is the secondary, not the d-line.”

  • Caleb Williams is not the Heisman Trophy favorite this week at BetOnline. Michael Penix is the favorite at 15/4 while Williams is second at 17/4.
  • Looks like most of the Pac-12 will be off the nation’s radar based on the TV schedule for Oct. 7:

    Scott Wolf, I would like to point out your lack of professionalism and integrity as a sports journalist. My background is in the IT field and am familiar with WordPress architecture. After ghosting your blog several times something odd came to my attention. A person who often replies under the username “Cowardly Gabby” (too many characters to list the entire name) is replying with “embedded posts” lifted from Twitter accounts. Here’s the problem with that, only the administrator/ owner of this website would have access to “developer t00ls” that could permit these types of posts to come through without being flagged for moderation.

    The person in question is replying with “embedded posts” one after another, often only one to two minutes apart. If I try to post a reply with an “embedded post”, from Twitter, in the comment box it would trigger the “waiting for moderation” dialog. It’s obvious this person’s relies are not being flagged for moderation.

    You have just been exposed for engaging in some really despicable behavior. I will be sure to let the other sites I frequent know the type of behavior taking place here

    1. Rusoviet: I agree that the vast majority on the board do not like the vulgarity, indecency, statements of homosexual sex acts and explicit fantasies of homosexual erotica. I mean one blogger actually has an avatar of an animal taking a dump and that replaced an avatar of a man on a toilet. He has repeatedly posted a video clip of a close-up of a horse defecating. This blogger has about 10 aliases and perhaps more. Unfortunately, I don’t believe there is much that we can do about it. The blogger is mentally ill. He engages in attention seeking behavior, attempts to hijack the blog and replace it with his own script, embraces victimhood by claiming he is stalked 24/7 and other nonsense, projects his own bad motives and behavior onto others, lacks empathy, and compulsively lies and manipulates in an attempt to make himself look better. He suffers from an extreme narcissistic personality disorder. The vulgarity is another feature of that disorder. Hopefully, he will get help but at this point it is probably futile. Institutionalization seems in order and/or a lobotomy.

  10. Another component of ‘SC’s defensive problems’ is that historically high octane offensive teams such as Oregon, SC and others who score fast often do not have the best results from their defense.
    Scoring so quickly does not give defenders sufficient rest

        Scott Wolf, I would like to point out your lack of professionalism and integrity as a sports journalist. My background is in the IT field and am familiar with WordPress architecture. After ghosting your blog several times something odd came to my attention. A person who often replies under the username “Cowardly Gabby” (too many characters to list the entire name) is replying with “embedded posts” lifted from Twitter accounts. Here’s the problem with that, only the administrator/ owner of this website would have access to “developer t00ls” that could permit these types of posts to come through without being flagged for moderation.

        The person in question is replying with “embedded posts” one after another, often only one to two minutes apart. If I try to post a reply with an “embedded post”, from Twitter, in the comment box it would trigger the “waiting for moderation” dialog. It’s obvious this person’s relies are not being flagged for moderation.

        You have just been exposed for engaging in some really despicable behavior. I will be sure to let the other sites I frequent know the type of behavior taking place here

When you score less than 2:50, that’s not giving your defense a rest. 2) If Riley stops trying to throw on every down, when your RB1, is avg 9.2 yards a carry you lean on the run game. Situational football and ball control is a must for teams with average to below average defenses. LR please go look at film dissect who are the weakest links on both sides n sir them down. If you are about winning a CFP, you must recognize what are your strength s and weaknesses. Strengths Caleb, Branch Rice Washington Robinson if you play him. Defense Bear Gentry Bullock, R. Davis, Byrd Muhammad Heights. I would love to see these players play in a regular base defense.

      1. I agree that that was the problem last year. The offense scored too fast not giving the defense much rest. Given that last year they didn’t have a lot of depth, those defensive players got tired at the end of the game. Fatigue caused a lot of the missed tackles.
        But that shouldn’t be an excuse this year. Like HC Dillingham said in the post game presser….”that defensive line of theirs is 10 strong”. They don’t lack depth this year. They got talented bodies on that D-Line and a lot of them. There is no excuse for the missed tackles this year.
        When you are #1 in the nation in TFL and tied for #5 in the nation in sacks and yet you are only #8 in the PAC-12 in total defense, that’s proof that your front 7 players are playing well individually but not as a team. I think that it also shows that your secondary is not playing well. This defense is a good attacking defense but not great. The great attacking defenses(like the 1985 Buddy Ryan Bears defense) attack but also cover the gaps and don’t give up the big plays.

      1. The real problem is that we need to get rid of the NCAA. They are a bunch of “do nothings”. We have to come up with some kinds of association that will make and enforce some rules here. SC doesn’t want to be throwing money around needlessly on this NIL thing. I don’t blame them. We now have schools that are just sending out cash to players that they are recruiting. Every week the player gets thousands of dollars from the school(with a promise of more to come) even though he has made no commitment at all to the school.
        We have other cases now where the players are charging $5,000 to the school just for the priveledge of having him take an unofficial visit. It’s getting ridiculous. I don’t blame SC for not wanting to play that game. But you need an organization to set rules for the schools to follow where all that is not allowed. Otherwise, the kids are going to go where the money is. A lot of the kids that we have lost since June and before is because of the money.

      3. This defense has the ability to be really good. They are in the tops for the nation in TFL nd Sacks(#1 in TFL) and I believe that they will be in turnovers by the end of the season. They have 3 areas to clean up.
        1) cornerback play(not safeties)
        2) LB play
        3) Communication between the D-Linemen and LB’s.
        SC plays a one gap system. If the nose guard lines up on the center and he is going through the right gap, he’s got to communicate that to one of the middle LB’s so they can cover the left gap. When you are running this type of an attack defense, all the gaps have to be covered or you end up giving up a lot of big plays.
        Can they correct those 3 problem areas. Clay Helton never did when he was here. Let’s see if Grench can.
