Mike Garrett Still Packs A Punch

ESPN did an oral history of Lane Kiffin getting fired and it’s worth reading. Full disclosure: I participated in it.

But there’s the quote that stood out to me. It’s from former USC athletic director Mike Garrett.

“(Pat) Haden didn’t know what the hell he was doing. So the place got worse, morale got bad. There’s no question in my mind if he gave Lane the time and the support and didn’t think of him as a Mike Garrett selection, Lane would’ve been successful.”

I think it’s safe to say that Garrett — more than 10 years after he was fired — is still angry about his dismissal.

Here is another Garrett quote: “I thought (Lane) was a student of the game, and I thought I had a maven in the works. I asked him to bring his father in, Monte. I thought Lane, offensively, could handle the load on that side of the ball, and Monte would handle the defensive side, and what a combination that would be.”

Garrett asked Lane to bring Monte? First of all, Monte was already at Tennessee with Lane. And Lane used that as a selling point with Tennessee and USC. So I don’t think it was Garrett’s idea.

Also, does Garrett realize asking Monte to come along didn’t age well?

    “Great Nancy but how?” asked Chuck.

    “We’ll get some cheesy clothes and shoes like most Middle Class Americans wear, then stop at the pound and pick up a Labrador Retriever.

    Then, we’ll go to a nice old country bar in Montana and show them how much admiration and respect we have for the hard working people living there.”

    So they did, and found just the place they were looking for in Bozeman, Montana. With the dog in tow, they walked inside and stepped up to the bar.

    The Bartender took a step back and said, “Hey! Aren’t you Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi?”

    “Yes we are!” said Nancy, “And what a lovely town you have here. We were passing through and Chuck suggested we stop and take in some local color.”

    They ordered a round of bourbon for the whole bar, and started chatting up a storm with anyone who would listen.

    A few minutes later, a grizzled old rancher came in, walked up to the Labrador, lifted up its tail, looked underneath, shrugged his shoulders and walked out.

    A few moments later, in came another old rancher. He walked up to the dog, lifted up its tail, looked underneath, scratched his head and left the bar.

    For the next hour, another dozen ranchers came in, lifted the dog’s tail, and left shaking their heads.

    Finally, Nancy asked, “Why did all those old ranchers come in and look under the dog’s tail? Is it some sort of custom?”

    “Lord no,” said the bartender. “Someone’s out there running around town, claiming there’s a Labrador Retriever in here with two assholes!”

    She was the mayor of San Fran in 1978 and U.S. senator for 30-years
    Certainly she was a pioneer woman who helped set the table for aspiring women everywhere

        –Hard to keep it coming as the age of 80s closes in on 90
        If she would have retired it might have bought her another couple of years of life

    2. Remember when Senator Feinstein was questioning Amy Coney Barrett for the Court of Appeals in 2017. Barrett was very open about being a devout Catholic but said that this would not affect her decisions from the bench. In other words, she would not be guided by Roman Catholic theology when making decisions. Feinstein looked at her personal life with 5 children, one an adopted Haitian girl with disabilities and said she was more concerned about her nomination that other Catholics because “The dogma lives loudly within you.” Great title for a homily – Does the dogma live loudly within you?

  8. I was not particularly impressed with Garrett as an A.D. It seemed to me that the position demand someone with the nuanced skills of a seasoned politician and Garrett was always blunt. But history has been kind to him. Many of us now prefer truth and bluntness to nuance.

      1. Owns: I remember that he was fired from Cal State Los Angeles for that. In my view, if I remember correctly, the allegations were not horrific. Just an older man who acted in a way that was acceptable in the sixties and seventies but no longer acceptable in a university culture. It was not like he was getting a blowjob from a 19 year old white house intern while he ate pizza and was talking with Yassir Arafat.

  9. I just ran across the 2003 email confirming my account with the O. C. Register USC blog which was the forerunner of this blog. Major differences are that the banter was about USC sports, the author/ owner routinely answered posts without using an alias and the blog was linked to newspaper. For almost 20 years this blog was a fun place to post. Even bRuin trolls were semi civil. Now this blog has become whatever level of hell with the stated purpose to chase people off the blog.
    I can’t even guess who is real or an imposter and the sad thing is the blog owner condones the behavior. This blog needs to die.

    1. Trojandude et. al.: Agree that the blog is not what it should be. It is vulgar and offensive. But it does not have to be that way. And the bones are good. We have many interesting bloggers and one person who likely suffers from a severe narcissistic personality disorder. He is not a cancer on the blog that has metastasized and dealt it a death blow. More of a canker sore. Scott just needs to treat the canker sore. It is not that difficult but for whatever reason he has not yet done it. Hang in there. We will get our blog back.

    1. Mike Garrett was a good AD despite what everyone says. He was fired(despite what they say) because he criticized the NCAA for their actions against SC at a time when SC just wanted to bow down and beg for forgiveness and not fight back.
