My Reaction And Your Discussion On USC/Colorado

I was all set at halftime to write about how USC actually played to its expectations.

Then came the second half.

How long can this nonsense continue? USC’s defense is going to hamstring it all season. This cannot be sustained by a team that wants to make the College Football Playoff and has the best QB in the nation.

After the game, Lincoln Riley was asked if he has trust in Alex Grinch? “Yes I do,” Riley answered.

Does anyone else?

USC can’t stop the run (Colorado rushed for 193 yards); can’t eliminate explosive pass plays and looks average during its best moments on defense. Colorado’s rushing offense ranked last in the Pac-12 but the Buffaloes had 193 yards rushing today. That’s ridiculous.

This is just who Riley is. He doesn’t care or have the slightest idea what do on defense. Mike Bohn wasn’t going to call it out. I doubt Jen Cohen will do it.

It will be a shame if USC’s season is ruined by a terrible defensive performance.

    1. Riley gets it by now. Only it’s too late. What he says about Grinch in public and what he really thinks about his “improved” defense are two very separate propositions.

      1. I hope you are right Michael. I have little hope Riley can take a stand against his buddy. I saw this syndrome throughout my career when otherwise good managers would overlook things for friends. It’s rather irresponsible and stupid to waste Caleb because he’s too weak to fire a friend.

      2. If they had a legit run game, like all USC teams of note have had, they could eat clock and not make the defense be on the field so often.

      1. I don’t see why we ran so poorly. Most of the game it looked like they were coming with 4 men….sometimes only 3…….you can’t run against a 4 man rush, especially a 4 man rush from a poor D-Line?

      1. What bothers me is: this team starts to show signs of panic when things get hot — Mike Leach was picked up by ESPN telling Luke Falk, “this is when it gets fun” when Washington State fell behind and had the ball & 90 seconds left in the game….

  1. It’s impossible to solve a problem when you won’t admit that you have a problem. Therein lays the issue with USC. Alex Grinch has proven over time that he is not a good defensive coordinator at Ohio State, Oklahoma, and now USC.

  2. To write that Wiley “doesn’t care” and is ignorant about defense

  3. Hire former TCU coach Gary Patterson as a D analyst which is what he did at Texas in 2022. Texas D now very much improved and he can work to clean up Grinch’s coaching.

      1. SC gained 498 yards total offense while Colorado gained 564. 498 is the worst total offense stat that they have had all year and it was against a poor defense. The reason that the offense didn’t have better stats is because Colorado’s offense had the ball most of the 2nd half. Ken Dilliamham in last weeks post game pressor said that SC’s D-Line was 10 strong. He was right. They have
        1) Bear Alexander
        2) Kyon Barrs
        3) De’jon Benton: this guy is becoming the new star
        4) Anthony Lucas
        5) Jack Sullivan
        6) Stanley Tau’oto’ou
        7) Tyrone Taleni
        8) Solomon Byrd
        9) Romelo Height
        10) Jamil Muhammad
These guys are all players who could start on many other teams. The problem is not the talent. Unless things change quickly, SC is going to lose more than one game this year. Maybe 3 or 4.

  5. I worried about the ‘Attitudinal Thing’ when Riley talked about needing more alone time…and less parking worries. Sanders had his team playing hair on fire football —Riley’s team [as someone mentioned] played soulless football. The missed passes, the missed tackles and the missing attitude is gonna bite us.

  6. The secondary and linebackers seem completely lost. The d-line didnt get much penetration against a horrible o-line.

The USC football program is riddled with problems that wont be solved this season. But Caleb will make it an exciting season anyway. I think the offense gets discouraged by the lack of ANY defensive competence.

Riley should just fire Grinch and let Burns try to get things on track. Grinch is the safeties coach and they look horrible.

      1. From 2:28 left in the 1st half until the end of the game, SC was outscored 34-14.
That Colorado running game that was averaging 55 yards a game, ran for 193 against SC. SC’s running game which averaged 195 yards a game ran for 95 against one of the worst D-Lines in the country. Justin Dedich is rapidly becoming the new Toa Lobendahn at center. He’s a great guard but not a good center. If Gino was still available, I would put him at center and move Dedich back to guard where he excells.
SC is becoming the best team around to play if your team is looking terrible and you want to play a team that will help jumpstart your team and make you look good. The last 2 weeks SC has played teams that were coming off of terrible performances in the week before and has made those teams look pretty good.
At this point, Oregon is definitely a better team than SC. SC’s offense may actually be better than Oregons but their defense is not in the same universe. They have a ton of really good players on that defense. It’s not the talent. At this point, they don’t look to me like a playoff team. If, by some miracle, they actually make it to the playoff, it will be by winning games 48-41. That team has the potential to be an outstanding team. I don’t see it happening. LR needs to break his protocol of trying to win strickly with offense and go out and hire a really great DC. He should have done that at the end of last year.

An honest assessment rather than a “I feel great” would have been appreciated. He’s acting more and more like a spoiled kid rather than a grownup.
I also couldn’t believe my ears when Caleb said we wouldn’t have gotten all those rushing yards without a great o-line…

  10. Many of the defensive breakdowns were based on scheme. Initial first down, late shift with an overload and CO qb just runs around the other side for 11 yards. End of the first half, only one defender in the entire middle of the field and he has a choice whether to cover or move up and tackle the qb. Last td, before the ball was hiked, you could see that Bullock had a receiver to cover while also trying to provide help to the cb that was getting eaten alive by D. Miller. Post pattern for an easy score.

And Domani Jackson is clueless. Never looks at the qb. Always turned around.

USC should drop at least 5 spots in the polls and they are not that good. ND, Washington, and Oregon are all better teams. They will be able to outscore Utah and UCLA.

Jackson couldn’t cover a one legged man and Wright isn’t much better. Play some new guys at that position. It hard to imagine that it can get any worse.

And Grinch’s blitz happy defense doesn’t help matters. The cornerbacks are frequently left on an island with no safety help. The Colorado WR, a freshman who had never played until the second half of this game had over 150 yards and a TD going against Domani Jackson and Company. Somebody needs to take over the cornerback coaching duties, perhaps the analyst that was brought in. Donte Williams needs to be re-assigned. We are going to be ranked 15 next week.

    1. Relax, you getting really spun out with all your football talk. Let’s take one game at one. We only need to focus on our next opponent and hopefully, we can make incremental improvements after each contest. The playoff picture is way down the road. It’s really premature to think USC is realistically a playoff team at this point in the season.

We have the worst linebackers in the conference. Tackett is flat-out lost. Our corners are not at the level where they can be left on an island. Jackson is struggling on every pass play to stay on the hip of the receiver. It’s getting painful to watch this kid get beat constantly. When your top 4 tacklers are in the secondary, you have some issues.

Riley needs to trust the run game. We need to have longer methodical drives to keep our weak link, the defense, off the field. Had the Buffs played better in the first half we would have lost the game.

  18. Road games are no bueno with this team, though we should beat ND in South Bend. We’ve got six weeks to figure shit out on D when we travel to Eugene. We should be favored every game the rest of schedule except for Oregon.

  19. LOOL My amigos, some of you are delusional, though you know better. You’ve been conned and you can’t admit it to yourselves.

Riley is a con artist. He has rode with Grinch and that sort of crap defense forever because it’s part of the con.

In this con, the defense in this con is only focused on gambling, to get the ball back to the offense, or get burned for scores, which again gets the ball back. The idea is to inflate offensive stats at all costs, particularly in passing.

Forget about an offense that can control the ball and string together long drives at crucial times, or get that short yardage in crucial times.

The Air Raid glorified scramble play is more exciting, and it runs numbers up overall (including for the opposing team)! But if you’re the Offensive Coordinator, you’re a “genius” and your QB is a star, just with a bad DC. LOL

And when you play a Big Boy team, or a team with a competent DC, they’ll have a delayed drop back some guys in coverage, have some people jump routes on the side of the play during a scramble, and you’ll start to see even talented QBs sht themselves because they can’t run around then throw a bullet when the coverage is underneath or bracketing on their side of the field….

And the wonderboy QB starts to throw dangerous passes to the other side of the field or picks or near picks because they didn’t expect defenses to jump routes. The counter trey running play as the only run play gets stuffed a couple of times, and the Genius panics and throws more. The team can’t protect leads.

The con however is built on fanbase hope, until that falls apart due to unmet expectations and political changes and screwing over the fans in other ways. (Like a California team and fanbase that doesn’t travel playing in an Upper Midwest and East Coast conference. Sometimes falling apart and reducing/ killing football and athletic programs and their support base is what administrators and trustees want, but I digress.)

Successful coaching is very rare and they still fire successful coaches precisely because they’ve raised expectations. But offensive geniuses that sell an “exciting offense” to all the numbnuts that don’t really know or care about the game itself but want the entertainment and flash, they can get jobs and stick around in “exciting” mediocrity for years, while the delusional fans (the majority) say, “if only he can get a good defense”.

The smarter (really the more honest with themselves) fans hope the resident Genius moves on to the NFL and that USC’s political scene takes a turn, and the NCAA and current conference / media situation blows up under some lawsuit. Because all these cons and con artists and politics and hype (I see you too Deion lol) are killing the game.

      1. Ikr? The popularity contest that is the Heisman today even gave out the trophy to the leader of an over-talented that got beat by Utah and Tulane of all teams. The con artists and the Air Raid QBs at a brand name university is the ultimate grift. The likes of Gardner Minshew was a scramble drill and stats world beater but he was at Wazzu. Every season, ditto.

Give the grifter (like Riley) some #1 dual threat QBs in a stat padding system at a top 5 program you lose all your big games and not win anything meaningful but you get the dim fans excited and chests puffed for a booby prize. It’s entertainment and inbuilt advantages/rigging, hype over substance, and none of it is “fair”, I get that. But there should be some core of honoring sportsmanship, student athletics, competition and tradition that should be there as well Imho, or I may be just falling behind the times or naive.

    2. Global: Some very interesting points. Unfortunately, you may be right. I think we have already seen glimpses of defenses dropping back additional players into zone coverage and taking away underneath routes. I think BYU did that against Slovis and Oregon State last year.

  20. I will always look at the big picture. Analyze what I see. Football is week to week what have you done lately. There is going to be a lot of movement in the next few weeks. Most of the top teams will be playing each other and lot teams are struggling with teams their supposed to dominate. Parity is here. Michigan, Penn State play conservative ball control and they do play great defense. But they are not playing Caleb, Pennix, Nix week to week either. We do need to come up with a game plan that helps our defense from being on the field so much.

  21. I truly believe that we have a truly inept DC. There are too many bad plays to say it is the players inability to do the job. We have a brilliant HC who, unfortunately is blind to the consistent poor defensive games over the last two seasons. I don’t know how much Grinch is being paid but he is certainly not earning it. It is a shame that so much player talent is being wasted. I think that Grinch should be fired asap.

    1. He’s being paid a little over a million a year. I’ve supported just about every decision LR has made. The one mistake I think that he has made(and it was a big one) was to not replace Grench after last year or even to bring him over in the first place(he never had much success at Oklahoma). Not replacing him will cause SC to miss a really great chance to win the NC in 2023(Calebs last year).

  22. IT IS probably too late, but IF SC could hire another defensive genius, not named grinch, maybe he could advise the current genius Riley thinks he has on how to use the personnel he has in a better defensive scheme. SC is going to lose to ND,OREGON AND WASHINGTON with this current defensive plan. Add UTAH if they ever find a q/b.
It is obvious the coaching on the defensive side of the ball is sub par…below avg…aka…STINKS.

As in Shaw saying of his coach ‘Christmas’ Grinch, “He’s doing a great job it’s just us letting him down with missed tackles.”

And Wiley himself said, “To the untrained eye” it appears 2023’s defense is the same as the one in 2022. “It isn’t”

    1. ACTUALLY IT IS THE SAME DEFENSE…there are different people in the positions but it still does not work. Why? the players can’t consistently do what is asked of them. It has been said for 1 1/2 yrs ‘we just gotta’ clean this up’ well it oughta’ pure as Ivory soap by now, but it isn’t ’cause the players can’t get it done consistently, they need to run a defense suited to the athletes or change to coaching that can teach it….he who has eyes to see
