Can You Really Blame USC Woes On Players?

Back to the defense.

USC has allowed 121 points this season. Oregon has allowed 59. Cal has allowed 132.

Do you want USC’s defense to be closer to Cal than Oregon?

And that’s 121 against mostly weak opposition. Remember how pundits like Yogi Roth talked up San Jose State when USC was allowing them to score 28 points?

San Jose State then scored 17 against Oregon State; 17 against Toledo and 20 against Air Force. The other game the Spartans scored 59 . . . against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Lincoln Riley and Alex Grinch are watching the film today. What are they thinking? That it’s the players’ fault? It might be. But it’s been the players’ fault for years on Riley teams, apparently.

Riley and Grinch are the common denominator.

  2. Whatever Grinch is doing, it’s not working. Bring in expert consultant Gary Patterson to fix it. I don’t know what else you do mid-season when you have a shot at the CFP. (FWIW Jim Leonhard currently an expert consultant at Illinois).

    1. It’s all on Riley – not Grinch – Riley.. He either wants to get into the playoffs or he doesn’t. AP and coach voters are watching and registering their assessment of USC weekly steadily downward regardless of the won/loss record..

      Riley may be stubbornly loyal to Grinch but I sense it really is all of us are seeing a side of Riley he doesn’t want others to see i. e. ……..he is the quintessential ‘know it all’.. Hyde stated attending a presser at US tightly controlled from start to finish and delayed based on what HRH decides when he deigns to emerge from his percch..

    2. Couldn’t agree more- I mean what they hell is this staff seeing that they think this defense is on the right track. It’s off the rails bad. The players are undisciplined, not organized, and consistently out of position. Its a complete shit show. Grinch is way over his head-he cant recruit top end Safety’s, DB’s, and Linebackers. And the talent he does get- doesn’t seem to improve. Please, someone find Grinch a mentor that he can learn from cuz this crap isn’t watchable

  3. I’ve seen this movie before and it is all on CLR. My senior year in high school we had a great football team that finished the year 7-3-1 after a 6-0-1 start. The problem was the O.C. , who was the BFF of our Head Coach’s father, and he had a blind loyalty to this guy even though he knew deep down our offense stunk and we had better talent than what we were showing. Plain and simple, the players knew this guy was a disaster and we didn’t believe in him as an OC. Players were pleading with our HC to change OC’s and he wouldn’t do it. Long story short, we got the league title game because we couldn’t score in the second half, lost the next game, because we couldn’t score in the second half, and a playoff game, because we couldn’t score in the second half. If CLR is going to piss away a chance at a NC with a once in a generational QB, then that is all on him.

    Enough already. Nothing is going to change until off-season.

    This is an air raid offense that is doing what it is supposed to do. This is not the 1980 USC team with Marcus running for 250 a game and a stifling defense. You have to trust the process. This sure beats the Helton, Kiffin days.

    I am a realist. This team probably loses a couple of games. I expect WA and OR to lose a couple of games as well. However, I think SC wins Pac 12 South.
    ND game will be catalyst for 10 win season. ND looked bad last night and their so-called Heisman QB played quite average. Rode game Saturday at Louisville will not be walk in the park either.

      The Notre Dame game IS the key —if we play a focused, disciplined game in South Bend we’ll blow Notre Dame out….and we’ll do the same thing to Utah and UCLA.
      But, yeah, Washington AND Oregon might be a bridge too far without a bye late in the season……

      4. All true Mike, Riley’s not a fool — his record proves it. He knows what he didn’t have in his previous failures on the big stage in:
        2016 Orange Bowl lost to Clemson
        2018 Rose lost to GA
        2019 Orange lost to AL
        2020 Peach lost to LSU

        note – all four were semi-final games.
        This has got to gnaw at his innards to have that kind of outcome on your own resume. I can’t imagine him, today 1st October 2023, seeing he’s headed for the same outcome, assuming he gets that far, by denying what so may have told him is one of the reasons he’s failed to play in the final bowl. He won’t address his indifference towards his defense.

      8. I dont think we will blow out very many, if any ,teams this year, but I also think we will be in every game.

        So if I were Riley I would be trying to figure a way to improve my odds.

        The o-line needs to play four quarters, improve in run blocking on short yardage downs and stop getting penalties. Also work with Caleb on not going cold over any consecutive possessions and having better vision to find open receivers earlier.

        The whole secondary needs alot of work, I’m not really sure how you do that. Is it possible to replace Shaw? The linebackers need alot of help too. D-line might be the easiest to push to the next level.

        There is no way Grinch should be the DC next year, but what matters is this year.

        Anyone who thinks this team is doomed is simply forgetting Caleb. He can keep us in any game where his head is screwed on right and he is not injured.

      9. I don’t think this team is doomed. They’ll have a good season. I just don’t think that they will make the playoffs….not with that defense. The defense has loads of talent but it needs to be fixed. I don’t think that will happen under Grench.

Grinch needs to be added to the list. I will reserve judgment on Lincoln. Lastly there is nothing sacred about tomorrow vs end of season. If you are going to make a mistake make it fast and fix it faster.

  7. The problem is Grinchy doesn’t know how to coordinate effectively. Where would this defense look like without Bear, Jamil n Byrd. I’m so tired of watching the same thing week after week. It’s totally insane. To much arrogance with this staff. In order to be better you must look at things that work. If you look at other teams in the conference they tackle, but have less talent than SC. No name coaches are way better than SC at this point of the season.
