USC Sunday Buzz: Lincoln Riley’s Side Didn’t Do Its Job Either

As bad as USC’s defense was Saturday, there’s a flip side to the criticism.

Since Lincoln Riley just wants to outscore teams, the USC offense didn’t do its job in the second half, scoring on just 2 of 7 possessions in the second half.

That’s not to the standards of a Caleb Williams-led offense.

Now it’s hard to complain when Williams had six TD passes and USC scored 48 points.

But Riley invites this kind of scrutiny because of his dereliction of duty to the defense. It’s part of the absurd philosophy when your culture is a one-dimensional team that doesn’t prioritize defense.

    1. I told you clowns that USC should have hired Chris Petersen.

And yes Petersen would have left the media booth for USC, still will.

Fuck ‘Ol Mule Shoe, if he wants to keep his boyfriend Alex Grinch and the other two incompetent clowns around…then fire his ass too.

Here is a link to their channel. This link was to their postgame yesterday with Brandon Hancock, just so you know how to get to the channel

  1. Fifteen years ago I was listening to a radio interview with Nick Saban on my way home. One of the questions asked of him was why he was so demanding of his assistant coaches and his answer spoke volumes on what has been going on at USC the last ten plus years in regards to suspect coaches.
“I don’t ask anything of my assistants that I don’t ask of myself. And the reason I’m so demanding of them is that I’ve seen some of really good athletes that have been ruined by bad coaching. Another thing to remember is that these kids only get one shot at playing college football and we as coaches need to make sure we get the best out of them.”
This quote is very appropriate as to the situation at USC. Talent is not the issue and because of some really bad coaching on the defensive side of the ball the Trojans are a paper tiger. Unfortunately, I think what it is going to take to make some serious changes on the defensive side of the ball is USC getting embarrassed on national T.V. either against Notre Dame, Washington, or Oregon. I’m talking about a game where USC scores 45 or more but gives up 60; anyone remember the Oregon game in 2012 where Oregon won 62-51? Monte Kiffin and the Tampa Two my ass.

    1. It is difficult to come up with a more embarrassing game than Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. And yet Grinch and Donte kept their jobs. And Saban is absolutely correct. You owe it to the players to provide great coaching that develops them to their fullest potential. Both Domani Jackson and Ceyair Wright have tremendous natural talent and yet continue to regress under Donte. Time to “tarmac” him.

Great comment … I’d only like to add this thought: Not only does Riley NOT ask his staff to work up to his standards [spinning your wheels like Grinch and Donte is not what most people consider “working”], he acts all butt-hurt if someone points it out. The rude tone and diva head turn he gifted that young reporter with when he asked about the defense was beneath the conduct of a Head Coach I got a good glimpse into who Riley is as a M-A-N in that exchange — and I didn’t like what I saw….

      1. We’ll see how Riley is with the media if he gets the shit beat out of him by ND, Oregon and Washington and maybe Utah if their QB is healthy. Don’t know id ND is very good, but Oregon and UDUB sure look good.

      2. We are so much better than Notre Dame —the issue is will we lose our poise at South Bend? Will we turn the ball over? Will we waste a series due to a dumb penalty? Will Riley scream so much at the officials that they start giving Notre Dame the benefit of the doubt on every call?

    1. They could be convinces if USC hired Leonhard (now a defensive analyst at U. of Illinois. Here are the rankings of his defenses at Wisconsin:

2021 – 1st in total defense (5th in passing yards per game, 1st in rushing, 4th in PPG allowed) – 2nd nationally in yards per play (4.17).

2020 – 5th in total defense (31st in passing yards, 5th in rushing, 9th in PPG allowed)

2019 – 8th in total defense (16th passing yards, 8th in rushing, 10th in PPG allowed)

2018 – 41st in total defense (38th in passing yards, 56th in rushing, 43rd in PPG allowed)

      1. The troubling signs to end the 2021 season ultimately continued and were too much for Kingsbury to overcome.

Arizona’s offense floundered despite the front office equipping it with tight end Zach Ertz, re-signing running back James Conner and trading for Hollywood Brown and Robbie Anderson to place around Hopkins.

It added to the narrative about Kingsbury’s inability to be creative and adjust.

Including the 2022 season and dating back to his first season at Texas Tech in 2013, Kingsbury went 45-24-1 in the first seven weeks of the football season.

The head coach’s teams collectively posted an 18-55 record after the first seven games of the season.

Kingsbury’s teams struggled mightily when playing from behind as well. The Cardinals have gone 6-30-1 when they faced any halftime deficit.

  4. Since this POS blog won’t publish my post, go over to ESPN and look at USC’s second half drive charts, it’s a passing leaguer’s dream. Riley called a total of eight runs and two of those were Caleb running so them may have been scrambles which would make it SIX running plays called in the second half.

You’re at altitude, your defense is gassed, maybe calling some running plays to burn the clock would help their cause, oh and getting a competent DC & DB coach would help as well.

    1. Ok — I get the point.
Watch Riley’s press conference. He doesn’t give a shit about anything but Caleb throwing for 400 yards. Let that sink in. The dumb play by the corners, the 367 yards given up to a passing game Oregon completely shut down, the 95 yards we rushed, the idiotic, repeated high snaps [does USC TEACH its centers to do that?], the arms tackles —he doesn’t give a shit. He wants another Heisman winner …and then he wants to leave for the NFL. Period.

      1. If Reilly wants to spend time with his family, don’t go to the NFL. And the NFL would be crazy to hire him. College coaches rarely work out in the big league and the Air Raid has not been successful in the pro game. Ask Kingsbury.

  10. At minimum have a focused defensive line rotation, especially for the second half to spell the bigs. They DLs are actually a strong group, but as we know, this offense keeps the defense on the field, and doesn’t help we always throw out any run / pass balance and go all Caleb. It’s the HC ‘s job to steer the team, not just score.

  11. Riley didnt run the ball against Colorado because the o-line was not opening up holes, plain and simple. And many of these plays allow CW the ability to hand off if he sees there is a hole., so it isnt a Riley decision, but a CW decision on the field.

That interception was a complete fluke, CW hardly ever underthrows that much, but part of the reason it happened is that CW did not see a wide open Mario Williams until far too late. CW needs to work on his field vision to find open receivers earlier.

When you have a talent like CW, you give him the ball and have him make the plays when the game is on the line. Receivers should have caught a few of those balls. I actually fault Riley for not scheming up higher probability pass plays that could sustain the drives.

Why dont they play Duce Robinson more? Duce and Rice on the field is a nightmare with the combo of speed and size and catch radius.

USC didnt have Branch in this game either.

I still dont think USC is running anything but a generic offense to this point.

Oregon seems like the biggest challenge. Notre Dame will be tough, but they have weaknesses. Washington will be a shoot-out and if our defense doesnt learn to cover at least a little, we are in trouble. But Oregon seems like the most complete team we will face in the regular season, and at Autzen, it is a tough environment. At least it isnt at altitude.

      1. Have you ever heard of RPO? The very core of USC’s offense is to force defenses to defend against the run, pass or QB run.

That strategy of simply running the ball to burn time off the clock is stupid if it has a lower probability of success than a balanced attack, or putting the ball in the hands of your superstar. The run game was NOT working well against Colorado.

So if your o-line cant run block, you dont just go conservative and try to run the ball to burn time if it leads to a 3 and out.

It is better to expose the defense now, in a game where we will not lose, than to have it happen later. I dont know if Alex Grinch has the ability to fix ANYTHING. But if he does, it is better the coaches get tape on it now.

Although that win didnt feel good, we saw that Notre Dame has issues, Washington only won by one TD versus Arizona. USC still could win out, it wont be easy and I dont predict it. But the doomsday stuff is overblown.

    1. Didn’t you get the memo, gametv? Duce can’t play if Caleb is in at QB. Only Miller Moss can toss easy TD’s to Duce Robinson. It would be wrong if Caleb did it…..

      1. As I said in another post, we might have only seen the generic version of this offense so far. Only time will tell if there is another gear for this offense.

I do think the o-line needs improvement, but not sure it will get done.

SCNG Luca Evans quoted USC safety Byron Shaw ‘…. about Grinch when asked if he still trusted Grinch bluntly replied “….yes I do!” …a fiery defense of Grinch, anodizing display of accountability in sticking up for a coach who’s drawn nothing but raves from his former players and coaches at previous stops.’ “Coach Grinch, he’s doing a great job – we’re letting him down. 1. I agree Mike – the scores will determine who is ranked where in the next 6 – 7 weeks. ‘the princess’ was very lucky last night but then good teams make their own luck. Dart looks like an above average college QB – nothing more. As to OR and WA – much tougher especially if Riley keeps acting indifferent to what everyone else is seeing – defense is in trouble and USC safety Shaw having Grinch’s back, though laudable, is the same nonsense the NYY players are all collectively saying about Aaron Boone’s managerial skill – then again 5 years of Boone and no WS appearance.

As another mentioned, maybe you, hire someone as Kingsbury was hired – that is what Harvey Hyde echoed this morning and if Grinch get’s butt hurt instead of taking advantage of another set of eyes seeing we he can’t or won’t, than sack him.

      2. Rusoviet: USC hired Greg Brown as a defensive analyst. His specialty was defensive backs. Looks like he hasn’t helped much.

      3. The analyst can’t do the hands on stuff —that’s where Donte gets to do his special magic…..

  13. I think the defense is important to him, he just does not have enough experience to understand what it takes to really improve the defense.
To add to the problem they use preconceived formulas/schemes/notions instead of looking at the personnel and plan from there.
They have the personnel, but the personnel seem incapable of consistently doing what is asked of them. The tackling is a different problem, they do not do it even when in position 1/2 the time.

    1. No one who plays for Riley or Grinch [doing interviews in their cute little polo shirts and shades] is gonna take tackling seriously….

        My Friend Owns,
All government agencies, as I’ve said before, are like a Mike Tyson opponents –“They’ve got a plan until they’re hit in the face.”
That said, the response here has been WAY better than the response we got for the Oakland fire in ’93….
