Morning Buzz: USC-Colorado Report Card

QUARTERBACK

With 403 yards passing and six TD passes, Caleb Williams had an insane passing rating of 204.1. But do stats tell the whole story? In the second half, Williams had a few ill-advised passes and the offense sputtered.

Grade: B+

RUNNING BACK

MarShawn Lloyd rushed for more than 150 yards last week. So what does Lincoln Riley do? He gives Lloyd 13 carries vs. Colorado. It’s ridiculous how Riley refuses to run the ball in key situations, especially in the second half when it keeps the USC defense off the field.

Grade: C-

WIDE RECEIVER

Tahj Washington and Brenden Rice had 13 of Caleb Williams’ 30 completions. And, in a minor upset, both started. Mario Williams’ quiet season continues while Dorian Singer isn’t getting enough opportunities.

Grade: B

OFFENSIVE LINE

There were times when Caleb Williams was running for his life but maybe that happens when you throw 40 times and run only 25 times. Williams getting sacked twice is a lot for him and means he was under too much pressure. It was a missed opportunity to show if the line could be physically dominant.

Grade: D+

DEFENSIVE LINE

With Colorado’s weak offensive line, it should have been a field day for the D-line. But like the rest of the defense, it faltered in the second half and it was fully culpable for the Buffs rushing for 193 yards. Unforgiveable.

Grade: D-

LINEBACKER

Mason Cobb bounced back with a game-high 13 tackles and a broken-up pass. It’s a little perplexing how Eric Gentry blocked a punt but seemed to have a reduced role at linebacker. Tackett Curtis had a face-mask penalty as his overexuberance continued.

Grade: D+

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Freshman wide receiver Omarion Miller had played just 11 snaps for Colorado prior to the USC game. Then he has 196 yards receiving vs. the Trojans. Domani Jackson gave up two long passes on relatively short completions. The safeties were part of the meltdown too. Christian Roland-Wallace is head-and-shoulders above the other corners. It just took Alex Grinch and Donte Williams way too long to see it.

Grade: D–

SPECIAL TEAMS

Without Zacariah Branch, it eliminated the chance for a dynamic play. Eric Gentry’s blocked punt was a big play in the first half. Colorado’s momentum was helped by a Denis Lynch missed field goal.

Grade: B-

COACHING

The arrogance continues for Lincoln Riley. His defense is under siege and he doesn’t even try to run the ball to give it a break. He won’t touch Alex Grinch. He knows more than you. “When something doesn’t go our way (on defense) it doesn’t look like last year. Not to the trained eye, not to a coach,” he said. It’s kind of amazing how Riley has transformed his image in the past 19 games at USC. And not in a good way.

Grade: F

  4. The F for the coaching was to high.

    Anyone notice on one of the Colorado TD’s that SC had ONE player on that side of the filed ? There were two Colorado OL looking for someone to block but their WR was already blocking the only SC player there.

    The defense got gassed. I’ve lived at 5,500 feet elevation, you cannot breathe when you exercise if you’re not used to the elevation and it takes more than a day to get used to it.

    But, if Mr. Pass Happy had RUN the ball more than 6 times in the second half and run the clock the defense wouldn’t have been so worn down.

    Arizona gave UDUB a game, SC better be ready.

  9. After watching years of Air Raid coaches / offenses, it’s amazing that when things aren’t going exactly as planned, there’s panic and running the ball goes bye bye,. Defenses seem to know it. Also, there seems to be the inability to understand that this type of offense which either scores fast or gets stopped fast, puts the defense behind the 8 ball every time and balance remedies much of this. Instead, the shootout is on.

    How can a multimillionaire coach, paid to move the program to the heavens, not witness year after year the recipe for a natty. It’s almost like they turn off the TV after their last game. I’m not looking! You can’t make me look ! How does one not notice the incredible toll this approach takes on defensive recruiting, and every year it gets worse. How a solid defensive coordinator would think twice about joining a one-diminished program.

  11. I’ve almost completely stopped posting because of this drivel. Back to sports now- if this is the SC product going forward- we are going to get waxed by the O. And to give the D line a D- is very generous. The Safety Shaw had it right when he said the players failed- they friggin cant tackle, its embarrassing. And Riley’s game plan to consistently try and throw HR shots instead of playing efficient- this game should have been 60- 17. Instead Grinch and staff almost had another come from ahead loss

This is a technically complex game and a very physical sport. Of course I’m not thrilled with the defense. Of course I expect the offense to score at least 50 points. But the nature of coaching college football is that you have to develop the youth into mature players. The huge observation about this game is how big a step the Buffaloes have taken since last week. We can learn from that, because we must learn from that

  16. My grades…

    QB – B+ This is more of a grade based on what we expect from Caleb, rather than versus other QBs.

    Running Backs – A- The problem was with the o-line not opening holes. The backs are great.

    Receivers – B+ There were a number of times the receivers should have brought down a key pass, but overall the receivers are really good. This grade is also based on high expectations for the unit.

    O-line – D+ USC should have dominated in this game, but didnt. The run blocking might not be decent against good teams. This is a coaching issue, Henson is not getting what he needs out of these players. Tarquin is better than I expected, but the guards are weaker. Scott was right about this. The penalties might also have stopped at least one drive.

    D-line – D Not nearly enough pressure on a weak o-line. Lost containment. Poor defense against the run.

    Linebackers – D+ The linebackers are just a mess in every game. Maybe this was a little better. The biggest disappointment was Raesjon, who was out of place on several big plays.

    Secondary – F – Just trash. They cant make plays, except for CRW. Bryson Shaw was horrible, Calen Bullock played poorly as well. Max Williams reverted. Domani got burned. Actually Ceyair came in and made at least one big pass break-up.

    Coaching – D Agree with Scott that this is a coaching collapse, with the exception of the receiver coaches and running back coach that always do a stellar job. Maybe the rush end coach is also not to blame? Once again, this is being measured on a different scale than lesser teams.

    Despite the poor grades, this team will be able to stay in any game this year with the explosive offense, so as a USC fan, it is possible to be really frustrated at the incompetence in coaching, yet still know that Caleb and Riley’s offensive magic might allow them to go undefeated. This was really a blown opportunity for USC to have a season unlike any other team.

    1. You are right about Raesjon, he and a few others ended up doing absolutely nothing on 3 of the Colorado touchdowns. Why was that? Confusion. The system must be mind boggling if these guys cannot pick it up. They are not all stupid. Simplify the defense and we will get 11 players where they are supposed to be instead of just 8 and have a complete defense.

    2. And about the offense, they will score on anybody. Caleb is unstoppable through an entire game. One thing I have noted, the play calling has been very vanilla. I do believe Riley is sitting on some explosive plays which we could be getting to see fairly soon.

  17. If you look at the stats from last year’s defensive numbers it is better but only mildly. Like saying a F to a D- is better. Yes, but not enough better.

  19. Sorry part II – USC @ CO he had barely veiled contempt for USC and Williams compared to QB Sanders but noted USC wake up at 4:40 am for the 10:00 am MDT kickoff is what USC will be facing next year in their cross-country away games…..one thing he got right.

  20. This place has always been weird. I don’t have the slightest clue what’s going on now. At least people are finally starting to notice how hard these Air-ish Raid offenses are on defense. A lot of the defense being bad in the second half is that it’s tired.

      On the subject of SC defense, an air raid coach has a lot of headwind in attracting and hiring excellent DC. Things will probably get worse as you get deeper into the schedule. I feel your pain. Sort of.

      3. Part of the problem in that game is that the players ran out of gas at the end. I thought that they played well on defense into the third quarter. Then they gassed out. Your playing at a high altitude and the SC defense was on the field for 90 plays. On top of that SC is scoring in a hurry which doesn’t give the defense time off the field. SC probably should have run the ball more. That creates longer drives and gives the defense some rest. And why wouldn’t you run the ball? In previous games, Colorado couldn’t stop the Chicago sisters of mercy with Mother Theresa at tailback. All of a sudden they completely stop the SC running game. But, ultimately, we need a new DC.

    Defense is trash. However, the offense was shut down in the second half. Was it because Colorado made adjustments or did SC lose its momentum thinking that they had the game won? Grinch and Donte need to leave.

    Run 4-3 defense. The 5-2 is leaving too many holes.
