Did USC Even Try To Run Ball Vs. Colorado?

Lincoln Riley said on “Trojans Live” today that USC offense could have aided the defense in the second half if the running game had been more successful.

Did Riley even try?

MarShawn Lloyd had four carries in the second half. Austin Jones had two. That’s six running plays.

Who is not helping the defense? The team or the coach?

This reminds me of when Chip Kelly coached in Philadelphia and the defensive players started getting angry because of the quick three-and-outs on offense that required the defense to be on the field too long.

Seems like most hate Kliff and his record at Tech wasn’t the best but being behind UT & A&M in Texas is not easy.  As for AZ Cardinals, probably shouldn’t been offered the job in the first place but also doesn’t help when your #1 draft choice QB is more interested in video games than NFL defenses.
        It’ll be a lot easier to recruit at USC than it was at Tech and hopefully he’ll value defensive side more than CLR.

  8. This is why I had some reservations about the CLR hire. These offensive ego maniacs are concerned with one thing and one thing only, showing everybody how electrifying how their offense is. We saw the same thing with Sark. When he got the USC job there were still the scholarship limitations, and it affected depth on the defensive front seven. But he wanted to run this “Oregon Style” hurry up offense, and instead of running the ball when USC was ahead to keep the defense off the field and shortening the game, he was always trying to show how fancy his offense was. If you remember some of those games, the defense was barely hanging on at the end of the game. CLR has too much experience to make this mistake through lack of knowledge. This is just stubbornness.

    1. Hire former tcu coach Gary Patterson as advisor to adjust defense /the talent level…less man coverage…they just are not good enough at it…they get fooled 5x per game and leave the field wide open…plus they still can’t wrap up their tackles.

  15. Okay, I reviewed the film and USC needs more athletic linemen on offense to run different run plays instead of the ones they keep trying to use. Why they won’t switch Monheim to right guard and bring in Paige is driving me crazy. Stubborn, but why? Getting obvious WHEN JOEL KLATT CALLS OUT YOUR RUN PLAYS COACH!!!!

    Defensively? Grinch defense is basic. Too basic.  Sanders figured him out and adjusted. Grinch can’t fool a decent quarterback.  Look at how he held the ball in the first half and then how fast he got the ball downfield in the second half.  The lack of sophistication is no longer funny, just downright sad.

  18. When you have at least a 20 point lead in the second half, perhaps the offense should snap the ball with 2-3 seconds left on the play clock rather than 28 seconds. This will help eat the time off the game clock, limit Colorado possessions, and keep the defense on the sidelines. Coaching 101!

    colorado adjusted and that stopped the run. SC’s play call for the run was given up due to Riley’s ego and trying to showcase Williams. The oline is not physical enough. Running counter with one back will be stopped. It would help SC if they ran power I ,with two fullbacks to help the oline or extr te’s. instead of just running one play, it is okay to run between center-guard, guard-tackle, tackle-te, and run sweeps to the outside. Going to the Big 10 will be a wake up call for SC. They play phyiscal ball, SC does not. They used to. Riley should be aware of this and start preparing for power run. He won’t. He is pass happy. If he is pass happy, then get a dcordinator that can stop the other team.
