USC Morning Buzz: What Exactly Ails Defense?

With Alex Grinch such an easy target at USC, what would be the most-valid criticisms, especially since safety Bryson Shaw blamed the problems on the players Saturday, not the coaches.

“I think it’s about the schemes,” a Pac-12 coach said. “They run a lot of stuff and it feels like he makes it complicated. I’d like to see them play with a more simplified scheme where the players are able to just play more often.

“That’s sort of the been the book on Grinch. He likes to load up the playbook.”

  • The USC-Colorado game drew the biggest audience Saturday. Good thing Lincoln Riley kept it close.

  1. So if it isnt the scheme, then why have the coaches not developed players better? The reason you pay coaches a ton of money is because they are proven to be winners. Grinch is simply not a winner.

    Is it because his linebacker coach is an idiot? Is it because his cornerback coach has never been able to coach up a single player? Grinch is responsible for everything on that side of the ball. The scheme, the coaches, the practices.

    Grinch’s teams get WORSE with more practice. The game against Tulane should have proven that.

    USC has plenty of talented athletes. Recruiting gets you the athletes. It is up to Grinch to develop their skills and put that into a scheme.

    Maybe Bryson Shaw needs to realize that Grinch owns the whole enchilada. STOP making excuses for him Bryson. You are enabling the village idiot to continue being an idiot. You only fix a problem when you admit it.

    3. Alex Grinch has never been worth a shit. He wasn’t worth a shit at Ohio St.

      He lasted one year in Columbus and the Buckeyes defense that year tanked.

      Riley brought him to Oklahoma and same shit, crap defense, blown out in bowl games.

      USC supposedly has better defensive players this year and the defense is worse. It’s not the players it’s the shit defensive coaching staff of Grinch, Shaun Nua and Donte Williams.

    4. It’s very simple to understand. The defensive coaches are glorified high school coaches where players never develop to their full potential. The reason for such a complicated defense is that Grinch is trying to convince himself and the players that he is a defensive mastermind, the same way the Kiffin and Sark once did. The reason that players like Bryson Shaw are constantly coming to his defense is that they are getting playing time when their sorry butts should be on the bench. Even Harvey Hyde called him out as to why certain players are getting a lot of snaps and others are not. The other thing that is beginning to rear it’s ugly head is that players are beginning to question whether or not Grinch has the chops to get the defense up to speed to get to the conference title game and beyond. A lot is riding on the Arizona game this Saturday, I cannot believe that UofA is a 34.5 underdog in this game, and they ran the ball against UW could be trouble for USC.

      1. trojnfu4 you’re right as to what Harvey said Sunday morning – lack of playing time for +40% of the defensive bench. Then there is that certain restaurant he hypes ‘The Hat’ which is inland empire.

  2. Doesn’t the defense wear wristbands ? That’s absurd.

    Colorado adjusted in the second half, Grinch never did.

    On one TD, USC has ONE guy on the side of the filed that the ball went to, ONE, two Colorado OL have NO ONE to block.

    Klatt states that when the RB lines up a certain way, USC will run, 162 is an offensive genius to have a color commentator know when he’s running the ball ? Memo to 162, if Klatt knows, now all the future DC’s know and Colorado’s DC probably figured it out.

    Great coaches see weaknesses in their staffs and fix them, 162 just ignored his two biggest problems on defense and didn’t replace them.
