USC Morning Buzz: Another Chance To Remember A Key Stat

Now is as good a week as any to point out again: Who else besides Sir Lincoln of Riley has won three Heismans and never won a national championship? Or maybe even just multiple Heismans and no national title? Or maybe three Heismans and never appeared in a national-title game?

Maybe to win a national title you need defense. And an ability to run the football. Does either rank highly with Riley?

  • Linebacker Eric Gentry played just nine snaps against Colorado but Riley said he was healthy.

“He’s back full go,” Riley said. “But when you miss the time that Eric has, he missed all of spring ball . . . and was very limited all of fall camp. He’s healthy but he’s still getting his feet underneath him . . . and listen we got a better linebacker corps than we did last year. It is what it is. There’s more good players.

“Eric’s going to have a chance to have a prominent role.”

This is another instance where a good player just doesn’t play enough (like with Christian Roland-Wallace the first four games).

    1. Grinch calls the same crap “Speed Defense” every game no matter the opponent. The idiot doesn’t use different game plans relative to an opponents strength and or weakness.

      Defensive linemen always trying to shoot the gaps to get in the backfield instead of just doing a straight rush which would at least clog up running lanes. Linebackers all over the place, out of position, predictable blitzes that opposing offenses avoid with quick screens for big plays.

      You don’t always have to focus on trying to get the sack, blitzing all the time leaves an already weak Trojan secondary that doesn’t know how to tackle for shit, hung out to dry.

      Bear Alexander and the other defensive linemen are big enough and strong enough to dominate in the trenches, this shit where they’re told to shoot gaps is finesse bullshit. Just let them do what they have been coached to do, run through the players in front of them.

      Colorado has the worst running game in the PAC 12 and they torched that idiot Grinch’s crap scheme. It’s the same shit scheme every game, never any adjustments.

      4. Cal75, My Cal friend that I went to high school with went to the Cal game just this Saturday. he said he had a great time and was treated like a Capitalist instead of a socialist. he liked that part.

    1. Gentry is not the answer to getting a stout linebacker corp. And very disappointed in the supposed stud Tackett. No discipline and runs around like he doesn’t know his assignments

      1. Tackett is a product of his coaching, he hasn’t gotten any at USC because any competent LB coach would coach him up or yank his ass when he played undisciplined football. It could also be his DC with his complicated schemes that no one on the defense seems to know what to do, where to go, etc.

  6. Another FYI. This morning on the way into the office, I was listening to College Sports Radio on XM, and they were breaking down the OU/Texas game. To this point in the year, OU is giving up 10.8 points per game with Brent Venebles running the defense, as compared with USC giving up 24.2 per game. Now, they have some transfers come in, etc. but so has USC. The common thread between the two…Alex Grinch.

    3. Tackett didnt play a traditional linebacker position in high school, so all his knowledge is coming from Odom and Grinch. Oh, well, another possible great athlete wasted by this excellent defensive coaching staff.

  9. So Lee finally starts having good games almost dominant games. Cobb comes back and Lee is ignored. Cobb then is pretty much a non factor after he comes back. What gives?
