USC Morning Buzz: Colorado Hangover

USC center Justin Dedich had an interesting comment Wednesday about the offensive line during the Colorado game.

“We kind of got physically beat this game,” Dedich said. “It was the first time we’ve been against that scheme defense this year, so I think it was a good learning experience for us.”

Physically beat by Colorado? An irritated USC graduate and former athletic dept. employee told me Wednesday night this comment was a “low point in the program’s history.”

What does it say about the USC strength program? I’ve had doubts the past two years. Keep in mind this is a USC offensive line that starts three redshirt seniors.

I’m actually not surprised, seeing as how I’ve been the most vocal media critic of the offensive line for years.

Imagine an offensive lineman from the 1970’s saying they were “physically beat.”

  • Christian Roland-Wallace played 94 snaps against Colorado and started the game. But this is how the depth chart looks at cornerback. It was updated Wednesday so it’s not an old depth chart.

What’s the point?

    1. Your astute observation to Clay Helton’s doppelganger is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read on this blog. You nailed it! The irony on top of that is that Bendix was the star of the 50’s show, “The Life Of Riley.” What are the odds?! Pay no attention to the culturally challenged – Fight On!

  1. The “Genius” of 7 on 7 Passing League and the Scramble Drill doesn’t need Linemen, or Tight Ends, or blocking, nor a defense that does anything but try to gamble for a turnover (or get scored on) so the Genius can get the ball back to his offense and run more spectacular scramble drills that work against really bad coached football teams and run up passing stats!

The Genius doesn’t need to win meaningful games! It’s okay if the Genius struggles or loses even when he’s got a huge advantage of talent!

The Genius can destroy the confidence of his student-athletes and not develop their talent, and then toss them aside and blame them!

The Genius and his awed fans will just say all the talent went bad for some reason, and talk about passing stats and a single star player and media popularity trophies while other schools win big games and titles and play up to potential.

    1. I think what he’s saying is that no USC OL should be physically beaten up by a lesser opponent, but it’s been happening since Sark so why is anyone surprised ?

They keep hiring pass happy assclowns to lead the team, you think they want to play or are capable of playing physical football ?

      1. Without a doubt you’re clearly a Trojan fan who is not delusional, and knows exactly what he’s talking about. This is the best,  on point comment that I’ve seen on this blog in a decade.

  2. -Interesting 2nd-half SC season coming up
Offensive line and secondary are serious worries
The other sectors aside from ‘Celeb’ are ok I suppose
Was hoping to see Troy make a Trojan-Horse out of Number-0

and I come up with nothing- what you got?

    1. He’s supposed to stop the other team from scoring and he does a poor job of it, but it doesn’t help that his boss, coach 162, doesn’t help him out by using a ball control offense to keep the defense off the field

  4. Dedich said they were physically beat by the Colorado D-line. But he also said that it was the first time they saw that kind of scheme and they will learn from it. I don’t think he meant to convey that Colorado pushed them around up-front. If that is true, were in trouble. Notre Dame, Utah and Oregon are much better than Colorado. It sounds to me like Colorado won the line of scrimmage because the defensive scheme fooled them. A question arises as to why adjustments were not made by the coaching staff. These are veteran lineman and they had four quarters to adjust.

  5. I think there is a psychological problem in the USC program. They have stressed “team” so much that they allow individual players to get away with not taking responsibility. And the coaches are also allowed to not take individual responsibility for successes and failures.

If Dedich felt they were getting physically beat, why wouldnt he push himself and his teammates DURING THE GAME to toughen up and not allow that to happen?

Team focus is great, but if it allows players to not push themselves because their individual performance is not the focus, that is a problem.

I also still think that this team uses Caleb as Superman, where every player can just believe Superman will bail them out. That isnt healthy.

The o-line has plenty of talent and any deficits are a lack of the right culture established by the o-line coach.

I am equally worried that the o-line will cost USC games as the defense. Riley’s formula is to have an unstoppable offense and that only works if they have an o-line that succeeds against better teams.

  6. “Reap what you sow” is what is said
So maybe SC is stuck with a pass-happy offensive line
Still, Wiley should insert more of Number-0 and his sidekick
Run the ball as your “defense rests”

  8. Scooter, I have always believed this, the oline is the one that drive the offense. If the oline controls the game, then the probablity of wiining is very high. If I am the line coach, and I read that, I would tell the boys to strap the helmet on tight, we are hitting the sled for an hour and then taking on the dline for an hour for the next week. You have to be in physical shape in order to think clearly. If they don’t like the scheme then tell the qb to call a different play and run something that is comfortable for them. This is unacceptable.

  9. You have been the most vocal critic of USC period so saying you have been of the OL quite funny. You get your sense of worth from criticizing other I think.

  10. Being a physical offensive line is a mind set and nothing else. This all falls on the offensive line coach. Anyone remember the offensive lines of Tim Davis? They took pride in punishing people with the ground game in the fourth quarter. If what Dedich said is true, then USC is in for a rude awakening the next five weeks.

  12. The O-line is fine. Tell Caleb to get the ball out quicker instead of looking for the HR play. Sprinkle in some “draw-plays” to keep the defense honest. This is fixable from a coaching standpoint…. but will it happen?

  13. Why did football “evolve” from mainly a running game to a passing one

Might have something to do with the law of averages– passing offenses take fewer plays to score touchdowns whereas running offenses take more plays, thus creating a larger chance of a mishap
such as a fumble, interception or a killer penalty

Pity we have only intramural-style football now. Those Nebraska and Oklahoma running teams of the 1970s and 1980s were the most exciting football teams I ever winessed.

It’s typical for plow horse to call your comments BS and offer up some alternative facts. If he’s gaining no traction he’ll pivot to one of his greatest hits “School teachers are bad, they are trying to turn third graders into being gay and encourage transgender.”

The fact is, 99.9% of teachers are teaching reading, writing, and math and have no time for that so-called “wokeness”.Plow will continue to drink his Kool-Aid and we will continue to laugh at him.

The fool was making racist comments again and I called him out, it crushed his fragile ego. He wants me to drive from Vegas and meet him at some boxing gym in LA, so he can get a piece of me(what an idiot, I know!). Now you have fake gabby calling me a coward because I will not beat up some old man at a boxing gym.
