Did you go to the ABC concert at USC on Thursday night? I did.
Lead singer Martin Fry did a lengthy interview before the concert, which included talking about the music scene in his native Sheffield, England. Other local bands from the era included Def Leppard, Human League and Pulp.
It was all part of Trojan Family Weekend. The concert reminded me of so many pictures I’ve run in the past of quality concerts at USC that don’t happen too often anymore.
- You can bet the higher-ups at USC breathed a sigh of relief Thursday when George Tyndall died a “natural death” at his home according to the LAPD. This saves a lot of embarrassing publicity that a trial would have brought to USC. A lot of embarrasing publicity.
- I hear USC basketball radio announcer Jordan Moore was a finalist for the Clippers play-by-play radio job. The Clippers hired Carlo Jimenez, a recent USC graduate.
- Since Lincoln Riley prefers the transfer portal to signing high school players, should I email him this recruiting class:
USC signed only 11 players on Feb. 21, 1979, the first day you could sign a letter-of-intent that year. Who signed? Don Mosebar, who was regarded by some as the top offensive lineman in the nation in his recruiting class; Bruce Matthews, an offensive lineman who played in 14 Pro Bowls; defensive lineman George Achica, an All-American who was a Lombardi Award runner-up and Morris Trophy winner (top lineman in Pac-10); Joey Browner, a safety who was USC MVP in 1982 and a first-round pick; wide receiver Malcolm Moore, a second-round NFL draft pick; Fred Cornwell, a tight end who caught the game-winning TD to beat No. 2 Oklahoma in 1981; tailback Anthony Gibson, fullbacks Bob McClanahan and Tom Jefferson; offensive lineman Steve Enright and defensive back Tim Shannon.

- And now for some history:
- In 1949, USC students bearnapped Oski, the Cal mascot, from the lower levels of Memorial Stadium, where the costume was stored in a trunk. The students were looking for a stolen USC banner during the game in Berkeley when they stumbled upon Oski.
Four days later, Oski was standing next to Tommy Trojan. This was when the rivalry was at one of its peaks. Cal was ranked No. 9 in the nation when it beat No. 12-ranked USC, 16-10, in 1949 before 81,500 in Berkeley. Imagine that crowd today.
It could be a brutal rivalry. Life magazine wrote after USC played Cal in 1951 that, “(linebacker Pat) Cannamela helped USC incur three roughness penalties (and) was congratulated by teammates when he disabled California star Johnny Olszewski.”
- A common fraternity hazing in the late 1940’s involved kidnapping pledges. USC student and pledge Bill Walbert was kidnapped and dumped in a canyon in Brentwood in 1949.
Walbert tried to find his way and stumbled upon the home of actress Diana Lynn and her husband, architect John C. Lindsay (a USC graduate). They were playing double solitaire when Walbert arrived but spent the next two hours entertaining him. When other fraternity members arrived, the couple entertained them too.
- Actress and coloratura soprano Kathryn Grayson attended Manual Arts High School, which is about a mile from the USC campus. Classmates were Tom Fears, a split end who played for the Rams and is in the NFL Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame and Rachel Robinson, the wife of Jackie Robinson.
Other famous Manual Arts alumni include Jon Arnett, Frank Capra (director of It’s a Wonderful Life), artist Jackson Pollock, baseball players Paul Blair and Lyman Bostock and Jimmy Doolittle, the aviation pioneer.

Three High Schools Must Change Their Native American Mascots
High schools must change their Native American Mascots after the LAUSD School Board deemed them to be offensive.

“Three local high schools and a middle school must change their native American names and mascots by next year, following a vote by the Los Angeles Unified School District Board.
The board’s resolution stated that “the use of American Indian mascot names and images in schools evokes negative images that become deeply embedded in the minds of students, depicting American Indians in inaccurate, stereotypic and often violent manners.”
The mascots that must be changed are the University High Warriors, Birmingham High Braves, Gardena High Mohicans and Wilmington Middle School Warriors. The school board will pay for “reasonable costs” of such changes, the resolution stated. Costs include repainting the mascots and changing varsity uniforms. The schools must work with the district’s Office of Intergroup Relations to select new mascots.

Still remember the 1979 game against Alabama with the TV announcer saying “watch Charles White follow Brad Budde while Budde levels the Alabama linebacker.”
