USC Sunday Buzz: That Was A Disaster

It’s just too much to ask for USC to play to its expectations. Saturday night was disgusting.

Where to begin? I’ll start at the top because Lincoln Riley has become so lost in his arrogance, he thinks he has all the answers.

The final series in regulation was pathetic by Riley. USC is at the Arizona 6-yard line. All Riley has to do is kick a field goal. He can take a knee to set it up.

Instead, he tries an ill-advised pass that could have been intercepted. That’s his arrogance at work. Then he compounds the error with a running play as Caleb Williams and MarShawn Lloyd fumbled the exchange. Take a knee!

Williams then panicked and tried to set up a play to spike the ball but Riley called timeout. So disorganized. That was followed by the Keystone Cops field-goal attempt that was blocked. Did we mention USC has no special teams coach?

The game-winning 2-point conversion was more arrogance. Riley ran a weird formation but the play backfired and it was only Williams’ athleticism that turned it into a successful conversion.

  • I don’t know how you fix the secondary, which is awful. But the front 7 allowed Arizona to rush for 203 yards so how much better are they? You what else is awful? The offensive line. It couldn’t protect Williams or pick up blitzes

All of the above have been sticking points for me since the end of last season while the rosy media fanboys tried to say how improved everyone is.

  • Riley is coaching so poorly this season and he just relies on Williams to bail him out. The defense allowed 505 total yards. Arizona’s backup QB passed for 302 yards and 5 TDs.

“I thought we took some great steps,” Riley said. “When you go down 17-0, you get tested internally. . . . Your culture gets tested quick. Defense is what got us going and closed it with a huge TFL to win the game.”

Whatever. Who is getting better? Why is USC so uninspired? Can you envision this team in the College Football Playoff?

  • You know how bad this game was? Riley made Johnny Nansen look like a good defensive coordinator.
  • Meanwhile, Jedd the Fisch doesn’t even know the overtime rules and had to burn a timeout before going for 2. Good thing for Riley that Fisch was the brain trust across the field Saturday night.

      As if having to overcome Alex Grinch, Shaun Nua and Donte Williams shit coaching that for 90% of the game can’t stop anybody is a good thing.

      If the Ladies of Troy had just.a decent defensive coordinator and staff the games wouldn’t even be close.

        ‘Ol Mule Shoe doesn’t want to have to deal with coaches that have big personalities, who are brash, opinionated, who are hard nose and demanding. He keeps those three clowns around because he knows they won’t give him any grief, they won’t challenge him on philosophy when shit isn’t working.

        Those three idiots know they’re lucky as hell to even have a job, they’re going to do whatever ‘Ol Mule Shoe says, they’re not going to rock the boat.

        You see, ‘Ol Mule Shoe is timid, confrontation scares the hell out of him, it’s why he can’t bring himself to fire these clowns on staff.

        He fired Stoops at Oklahoma during the season, but that was because he doesn’t like the Stoops brothers and he wanted to put his own stamp on those Sooner teams. What they’re known for is being soft and can’t win vs quality opponents.

    Talk about luck, but some guy was down to 15,000 units and bet them all on the over 72.5 points for SC-Arizona, so he is right on my tail at 30,000

Walking out of the Coliseum after last night’s debacle I was completely disgusted by the lack of awareness, strategy, and overall football IQ on display by both CLR and Jed the Fisch, because the players on both teams deserve better than what they are getting from the “adults in the room”. I’ll spare you the details aside from this one. If you’re UofA, why would you not got for two and try to end the game in the first OT when you’re on the road against a physically superior opponent/Caleb Williams? Stupid.
    Combine that with the uninspired play by USC in all three phases of the game has caused me to basically mail in the rest of the season as a fan, because I’ve about had enough of the horrendous coaching and effort on display by USC this year. You can also throw in the “fan experience” at the Coliseum. Aside from Alex Grinch and the rest of the defensive staff, the other person who needs to be shit canned immediately is that jackass DJ, who is about as obnoxious and idiotic as anyone I’ve heard, spinning his garbage between every snap. Did USC need a DJ to enhance the “fan experience” during the Pete Carrol days with some half ass DJ? Nope!
    Lastly, I’m also sick of players “expressing” themselves with how they wear the uniform. USC has a classic uniform that should not be messed with. Remember when the two “Frat Boys” Kiffin and Sark messed with the shoes and helmet? You’ve got players wearing yellow and black tights, some with both legs and others with one leg. You also have players with their jerseys that are hemmed up instead of tucked in. It’s called a uniform for a reason and if these clowns cannot wear it correctly, send their sorry asses back to the locker room. It all starts at the top and CLR needs to check his ego at the door and start doing whats right for USC instead of CLR.

They both ignore the lines in recruiting, they CAN recruit good WR’s & QB’s, both have no clue about game management, both have no clue about special teams, both have no clue about defense, both take blow out games and turn them into thrillers ( Gomer turned them into loses, 162 is heading that way )

    4. SC was very fortunate the Arizona coach blew it. Arizona had USC on the ropes late in the 4th quarter with their running attack running student body left and right for big gains against the winded SC defense and burning the clock to what looked like an inevitable winning score with no time remaining for SC to respond when, inexplicably, the UA OC decided to have their freshman QB throw the long bomb on 1st down into double coverage. That bonehead call broke their momentum and they ended up missing a 52 yard field goal.

  6. What’s all this….. it’s better than the Helton years. Really? Helton destroyed USC football with his zero HC experience, zero recruiting, laziness, and platitudes. Remember he won the Rose Bowl with Darnold and bunch of future NFL players. Presently we’d be hard pressed to get a 3 start defensive recruit, our Oline and secondary coaching is in question. Riley has been outed as a one- trick pony OC but not a HC strategist that manages both sides of the ball. And what’s with not having a special teams coordinator. This is starting shape up to being a Helton part 2, but bigger paychecks.

  8. The good thing for coach 162 after this year is that most Big 10 teams aren’t very good, but the three that are will kick his ass most every year.

    Biggest problem for 162 going forward is that he won’t have Williams to bail him out game after game after game.

    After spotting Arizona a 17-0 lead the defense got a timely interception in the 2nd quarter and then held Ariz to 11 points in the 2nd half

    ‘Celeb’ was off-target much of the game when his supposed great wideouts were occasionally open, but somehow Celeb found a way to win

    Wiley said he needed an ibuprofen or 2 after the game, but was happy how his team rebounded from a 17-0 hole

    1. ESPN showed a stat last night that USC had 212 MISSED TACKLES coming into the UA game, that was 12th. Imagine that there are 11 schools worse at tackling.

      Soft coaches like coach 162 don’t preach toughness in ANY facet of their game, just pass, pass, pass and hope for the best.

Friggin Riley- a real head coach would have 1st said – “good job by our team for rallying for the win, but really, this was an overall terrible performance in all phases of the game- we need a lot of work” you think Saban would have been gracious with a win like this- he’d have lost his mind! Riley should have been laying into the Grinch who stole the national championship, laying into the team during that 1st quarter as they were lost. As for his alleged playcalling- he basically lets Caleb play playground ball- no offensive flow-
    Minimal in game adjustments etc… ya right Riley- your team has a shot at the playoffs- this team loses 3 more games easily.

  14. Check out the end of Georgia Tech – Miami last night.

    All Miami had to do was take a knee and they win. They ran a play and fumbled it to GT. Tech hits 44 yard TD pass to win with less than 5 seconds remaining. ESPN announcers called it worst coaching decision they’ve ever seen.

    Riley may have been befuddled and disorganized at the end of the game but Mario Cristobal beats him for coaching ineptness last night.

  18. I was a Vietnam Marine Corps Vet before coming to USC for a BS and MBA. If we performed in the Corps the way USC played last night, we would be in the sand pit all day today to remind us that if we ever played like last night again, then “God Help Us” because we wished we were dead!

    Riley has a fundamental flaw…his whole team is based on superman.

    Riley’s one magic bullet is to identify incredible QB talent and nurture it. So he builds a team that requires a Superman to bail them out.

    There is ZERO responsibility in EVERY other aspect of this football team and tons of personal relationships in the coaching staff.

    Riley brought over Grinch and Odom from OK and both are horrible and need to be replaced ASAP. Riley brought over the head of recruiting from OK. Riley hired Kliff Kingsbury, a guy who only knows how to lose, because he was a friend from the old days.

    Great football programs only come from brutal honesty and the honest truth is that USC is doomed to fail unless things are changed. The recruiting is a complete mess. #18 in the country for USC is a bad joke, they need a new director of recruiting. They need a completely new coaching staff except for maybe Simmons and McDonald.

    Bottom line is Riley should hire the best defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator he can find and start working as head coach and maybe working with the QB only.

  24. The biggest problem is we all fell for the hype and this team is not what it was hyped up to be. It won’t be, lose the expecatations and it won’t feel so bad. Even though it is. We probably have some dismal results coming simply based on what we have seen thus far. Unless LR has a bunch of stuff he hasn’t displayed yet, which I am sure he does. Grinch?? Hopeless.

    2. I believed that with CW at the helm they would improve over last year, but the core issue here is that players regress under this coaching staff.

      I really question whether Henson knows how to develop an o-line. He had 5 returning starters last year. The only SC coach that made the o-line better was the guy who is at Washington State now. Maybe in another year some of the recruits Henson brought in will be doing great (Noa, Paige, Banuelos, Raymond). But if he isnt a good coach, then next year will be very bad as three players leave.

      The defense regressed every year under Grinch. Noone really talks about how bad the linebacker coaching must be. They bring in guys who are showing promise – Gentry, Cobb, Tackett, Raesjon – and then turn them into non-productive players.

      And let’s talk secondary. They have been playing Domani and Wright, but the best corners are clearly Covington and CRW. Covington could have been even better if he got more playing time. Bryson Shaw is completely incompetent at pass coverage so why is he on the field? Teams are targeting Shaw over and over again and winning. I think Grinch loves Shaw and it is a huge blindspot. And of course, Grinch himself is the safeties coach, so that guarantees that they will never improve. Calen Bullock is not being used properly on the field either. Why would you bring Bullock close to the line instead of using him for deep coverage where he excels? I dont want Shaw as my deep coverage.

      I also question why the receivers are not dominating games. Without Zach Branch the receivers are not that stellar. Why are they not playing Duce? Why dont MJ3 and KWH get more targets, since they catch the ball (as opposed to Mario dropping key passes). And they have failed completely to utilize Dorian Singer.

      I dont think CW has been developed to his full potential as a passer. He is holding the ball too long, underthrowing receivers on the long all constantly, not durmping the ball underneath when there is coverage and flat out not seeing open receivers.

      This is coaching malpractice. I actually think CW is getting a little tired of it. He probably wanted Riley to fire Grinch so they would have a real chance at the CFP.

      Pure coaching malpractice. They have the players, but not the performance.

  30. USC needs a new coaching staff. They continually do the same thing over n over. Rush the ends don’t fill gaps let Back up Qb’s look like All conference. Corners can’t guard a nobody. I can’t see us beating Oregon nor Washington to much offense and wrong scheme
