USC Morning Buzz: Coaches Had “Perfect Calls” Vs. Arizona

USC coach Lincoln Riley offered the following assessment of his defense Monday night on the “Trojans Live” radio show.

“I think going back and watching the film and our coaches knew right away, the couple of plays that they got on us early, we had the perfect call,” Riley said. “We were like dead to rights. If you were on the Arizona coaches’ headset and knew exactly what you wanted to call, we were in it and I think our coaches knew it and our players knew it and we just made a few dumb mistakes that opened up big plays.”

REACTION: What is Riley doing here?

1.) Desperately trying to defend his beleaguered coach, Alex Grinch?

2.) Throwing his players under the bus?

3.) Both.

If the coaching staff had the “perfect call” and players failed to execute, that is still a failure of the coaches. If the players are making “dumb mistakes” that also falls on the coaches.

It also kind of forgets Arizona had 500 yards of offense and five touchdown passes. It makes it sound like USC stopped them other than those “dumb mistakes.” Also, USC knew what Arizona was doing and still could not stop the Wildcats?

It’s kind of crazy that we are seeing comments like this from a 6-0 coach but it illustrates the level of unrest regarding the performances.

    1. ‘Ol Mule Shoe doesn’t want build a good/great defense because that would require hiring elite coaches/coordinator and ‘Ol Mule Shoe doesn’t want to share the limelight with anyone.

      Not only that but ‘Ol Mule Shoe is timid.

      Hypothetically speaking, say USC hired Ed Orgeron as a consultant, Orgeron would intimidate the hell out of ‘Ol Mule Shoe. Orgeron wouldn’t put up with this shit every week, repeat offenders missing tackles, Tackett Curtis, Bryson Shaw, Domani Jackson, Gentry and Mason Cobb…all those girls would sit for a significant amount of time.

    2. If there is are few players making mistakes on plays that is one thing. But when many players are consistently making bad plays then it is the system of training.

      Good football coaches create a scheme around their players. Then they have the players practice until it is second nature. You dont want players to be forced to “think” out there, they should ONLY be reacting as they have been taught by their coaches.

      If Riley and Grinch dont understan this, they have a big problem.

  4. There is a downside to using Mercenaries (Portal Players) in football and in war. You can’t win with them. They don’t have any “fight” in them (“Fight On for USC”). SC needs more homeboy players. SC has what? 2 local starters on Offense and 2 or 3 local starters on Defense. In Reverse: local players who are on opposing PAC-12 teams want to prove themselves when they play against SC.

    That defense became a national laughingstock after the A+ rated Tulane bowl game.

    SC has another Helton on its hands. I heard Riley saying the same thing on the radio. Pathetic. He believes that they had the correct defense and yet the players did not execute properly. Riley, how do you explain how the SC defense got blown away when ariz ran right and the dude went 20 yards. SC got blown off the line, the players were not there and they got bounced. They play soft and they are soft on both sides of the ball. This is Helton 2.0.

  16. Watching the AZ game, one thing stood out very clear—USC players failed to consistently attack at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The DB’s were standing around not knowing who to cover, which is why so many AZ receivers were open. Lack of discipline and stupid penalties by AZ kept USC in the game. They need to win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and the DB’s need to get within arms length of the opposing receiver on man coverage. I just don’t understand why they have problems doing this. When they are in zone coverage, they should attack once the ball is in the air, rather than waiting for the receiver to catch it before attacking. This failure allows too many YAC yards and continued first downs. This is simple failure to coach and it all falls back on Riley. Riley should watch what Coach Prime had to say after barely beating ASU last week. This is how Riley should react, not give his players the “attaboy” pat on the back for coming back from 17 down. Pathetic!!!

  17. Helton’ish yes. Even worse, Brian Kelly-like. Never wrong, always the players not executing. Riley is much gentler when saying it, but he’s saying it. At least Kelly would yell at his assistants. We will know if they even have a clue how to adjust in the first ND offensive series. Truth be told I was convinced Riley was a “confront the issue” guy, but I’m afraid he’s just another Air Raid coach with better players. It’s like he’s never watched the last decade of national champs, and the obvious formula. Almost like trying to run up points and just out score the opponent is a fetish. This contract buy-out will be a doozy.
