USC Morning Buzz: The Cupboard Isn’t Stocked Full For Coaching Move

There’s been some suggestions if USC’s defense continues to struggle, Alex Grinch should be fired before the season is over.

The problem with that scenario is who replaces Grinch? Donte Williams can’t even seem to handle the cornerbacks. Roy Manning has never been more than a linebackers or cornerbacks coach. Shaun Nua has never been more than a defensive line coach. Brian Odom is a career linebackers coach.

The natural candidate would be defensive analyst Greg Brown, who was defensive coordinator at Charlotte last season and previously was defensive coordinator at Colorado (2011-12) and Arizona (2010).

But Brown is supposed to be helping coach the cornerbacks this season and it’s hard to say he’s having a big impact.

Anyways, these are the options if Grinch were somehow replaced.

  1. I look forward to the return of Mike Guarino and the end of the fools who have settled here with their vitriol and scorn that contribute nothing for the rest of us.

    Back to topic – sadly he has to be retained if only to impress on Riley, should USC again be denied into the playoffs why his mgmt. has led to this state of the program. Hopefully the ship will be righted but these next 6 games (even Cal) are going to be a gauntlet that was evident even before the near misses the squad has endured these past 4 weeks.

    Let this be graphically pressed upon Riley – win or lose.

      5. So Cal – I personally think that if we played UW and Notre Dame on ten different days, we would have a wide variety of outcomes, from dominant wins to devastating losses. This team has enormous upside and huge downside, every play on offense and defense could be a melt-down or a touchdown.

        So I personally think that predictions are worthless. It all depends upon how the ball bounces on the particular days we play those teams.

        The only team that I think we might not be able to beat is Oregon, because they are really good on both sides of the ball and we are playing them at Autzen, which will disrupt our offense.

        But of course the Village Idiot acts as if it’s a big deal. Same as she did with claiming GameTV gave me a “crotch kick”. They don’t come any stupider.

      When the Village Idiot isn’t asking for a beatdown, Cowardly Gabby keeps it civil. Even Steve & Pasadena have been annoyed enough to come down on the Village Idiot and they hardly ever jump in. Bottom line is, it’s Gabriela who ruined the blog.

      6. SoCal I have no idea who is what or the collective ‘sybill du jour’ handles anyone has here. You just confirmed the unending confusion, thus my indifference as to who is guilty and who has no blame. Gabby is a good guy but he never should have engaged with the trolls i.e. it now has become a free fire zone. I believe I speak for a number of us who, as soon as we see a particular poster ignore it because such has done nothing but unload over and over.

        The real shame is there is not an ‘ignore’ option anymore – that would go very far returning decorum and civility here.

    MG single-handedly kept board going when Wolf was on hiatus a few years ago. We had something like 10K posts to a single blog post.

    with 4 chances at the win, but could not do it

  7. It doesn’t matter if USC’s defense gives up between 35-42 points a game for the rest of the year, Grinch is not going anywhere. If he was on the hot seat, he would’ve been let go at OU before he even got out here to SC. We are just going to have to grin and bear it until the season is over.

      The problem that i see is that it is not the firing at the end of the season, but will he even be fired along with Donte Williams? He might be here for the 2024 season. Without Caleb Williams, Riley aka Helton 2.0 will be exposed. My opinion.

      Cleats for online and wide receivers are important for rain. If you are lineman and it is raining, I hope they would perfer longer cleats for better grip. WR’s can either way, long or normal cleats. If the grass is slippery, then they might have to change. If SC wants to run the ball in the rain, then get the long cleats. It depends on what Williams will do, which will be throwing the ball as usual.

    2. Well, the Oakland Hills fire was in 1991
      Guarino was a LA Deputy DA in 1986, he ” famously ” prosecuted Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys for obscenity and lost.
      An article about the case from 1997, says Guarino was the assistant dead at the John F. Kennedy University law school in Walnut Creek, California.
      Guarino did resign from the LA DA’s office in 1993 after losing an election to James Hahn, Guarino was 44 at the time which would make him 74ish now.
      There is a Michael Guarino living in Maui in a 2 million dollar home, he was an attorney who graduated from USC and then Southwestern University School of Law.

      So, was the person posting as Michael Guarino the REAL Michael Guarino ?

      4. Also, If the real MG was posting in this blog, how did he have the ability to post replies the morning after the fire. Reports have stated internet and cell service were down for over 36 hours. it’s obvious the MG we know was an imposter.

        He also lied about the OJ trial. He told the blog he was working in a different office from Marcia Clark, yet he resigned in 1993. The trial started in late 1994. And why lie about being married and talking about current inlaws…..

        People don’t get the year wrong regarding one of the most traumatic events to happen to them, the Oakland fire. Supposably the guy lost everything.

  10. It is obvious Grinch is horrible. Look at UCLA’s hire and they got a legit defensive coordinator. One personnel change and UCLA is ranked the top defense in the country so it does make a difference.

    Regardless, it is too late to fire Grinch at this point as we are mid-season. Time to plan for next year when Caleb can no longer bail us out of games.
