Check that, a 99-yard kick return. USC has no special teams coach.

USC is still in this game, trailing 31-20 with 9:04 left.

There’s the USC defense we all know. ND scores on a 46-yard TD pass from Sam Hartman, who has been terrible tonight.

The last time USC trailed Notre Dame, 24-6, at halftime was in 1974. We all know what happened next. That was John McKay. Not Lincoln Riley.

It’s 24-6 at halftime. Notre Dame has only 130 yards in offense and 10 minutes of time possession and run just 23 plays

Time of possession: USC 10:16, Notre Dame 3:31

The USC defense forgot to cover the tailback on the TD pass. ND 7, USC 0.

Caleb Williams throws a terrible pass under pressure and is intercepted.

All right, we’ve had the build-up for a few days. Time for the game!

  1. WOW]!

Didn’t realize just how big of a dummy that Marcus Freeman is. He’s talking to a sideline reporter and he sounds like he might have gotten past the 8th grade.

Notre Dame must be hurting for money if they retained that guy.l

  3. This Ladies of Troy team, they’re all out of sorts. It’s like everyone knows Alex Grinch’s defense sucks and it’s just a matter of time before he costs them a game.

None of the Ladies of Troy defensive players have bought in

Not that I think it necessarily applies here. Your comment merely brought it to mind. 🙂

      1. No one else would make that remark, because I clearly stated it only brought the line to mind.

  4. This is basically what we expected. Offensive line dominated, defensive getting gigged, poor play design, receivers not working back to the qb. All to a team that got dominated at the line of scrimmage on both sides last week aginst Louisville.

  5. USC receivers have gotten worse as the competition has gotten better. It’s very hard for them to get separation. They benefit from Caleb extending plays scrambling and finding them. Hard to cover for 10 seconds. O-Line soft. LB’s soft, DB’s soft, receivers soft.

  6. They went and signed the best OL and DL available. When does the delusion stop? LR can’t coach a real contender no matter how much talent he has. It’s not the talent it’s the coaching. He’s got an unquestionable resume of mediocrity in any game that matters. That offense has already proven it’s bs. The defense he runs with it, ditto. But it’s bigger. The athletic program as we know it at SC is going down a dark road.

    1. I agree Lincoln Rileys coaching is getting exposed. Special teams just gave up a kick return. No special teams coach. DC sucks. The line coach sucks. The secondary sucks. I knew this was coming.

  8. I just heard a stat that Riley can’t spin his way out of. On the ucla broadcast just now Brando brought up this stat: no team in college football at any level, has missed more tackles over the last 2 weeks. You can’t be in the bottom 5 or 10 out of 131 schools in D1 is rushing yards given up, passing yards given up, scoring defense (aginst no one), penalties and the worst in missed tackles and tell me there is nothing wrong. That’s delusional.

    1. On top of the fact that appears other teams have figured out our offense. Can’t believe how much this team has regressed, especially the last few weeks.

  9. ND’s defensive line is beating our O line. And, ND’s cornerbacks are very good. But there are still some opportunities. Biggest problem is the failure to execute. Caleb needs to properly read the RPO and keep the ball. ND is all in on the running back. More crossing routes and get it to Branch.

  10. Finally a play design for a downhill run on the conventional option. Lloyd is fast and strong. This mesh point slow ride crap puts him at the disadvantage so it took to game 7 to run him correctly. Offensive genius… not quite.

  11. Takes 7 weeks to use Lloyd correctly with a conventional option and not slow mesh point crap. He’s fast and strong but they have put him at the disadvantage all year. Offensive genius I think not.

    Yeah right!

Riley is no Pete Carroll. Not even close. This team is getting worse as season progresses. That is not USC.

Jen, you have your work cut out for you.
You will have to make a lot of tough decisions in December.

  13. Jen is around to see our Athletic Department off to irrelevance, cuts, corruption, bloated mismanagement, then cuts and and irrelevance. It’s all about changing the culture, support base and its influence, demographics, politics, etc. It will take some effort but it’s well on its way. Asleep at Woke U.

      1. No he is right. The most important thing Pete did was change the culture. He did that be teaching fundlementals, organizing the program, and locking down LA recruiting. The Ath dept needs to not only support that, but demand it.

      1. No they’re not!!!! GOOD BYE Heisman Trophy. I doubt if Caleb is even a candidate after this game. Here’s the $64,000 question. Will SC still be rated in the top 25? If you want to beat SC, here’s what you do. Run right at them and hang onto the ball. If your offense has the ball, then SC’s offense doesn’t have it.
Also, come at CW with 4 or 5 guys on every play. He loves to hang onto the ball and SC really doesn’t have a good short passing game. It’s all or nothing with them. Also, tell your D-Backs to try and get away with as much holding as you can get away with.
This team reminds me of Lane Kiffins 2012 team. They were predicted to win the NC in preseason polls. They ended up 7-6 and with a loss to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl. I still don’t know what happened to that team. And I don’t know what has happened to this team.
The defense didn’t lose this game. They played fairly well, only giving up about 250 yards(although that isn’t saying much because this is not a great ND offense). This team is going to go 8-4….maybe 7-5. What is the reason for that? You tell me and we’ll both know.

  15. It is amazing how not great this ND team is. And just how good we made them look. They were spanked by Louisville who got spanked by a less than average pit team. As I predicted pre Colorado, this team will loose at least 4 games on the back half of the season. Most likely more.

  16. Not surprising as ND was favored.

It is painfully obvious what a good defense can do to a loaded offense. Maybe Riley will look at this game tape and have an epiphany that defense matters.

      1. How do you figure? ND got dominated by Louisville last week on both sides of the ball at the line of scrimmage. Louisville just got manhandled by a 2 and 4 Pitt team today. So do you think ND is a great team? Hell as bad as we were, we out gained them. We handed them the ball 5 times, they didnt take it away. They are a solid team that will loose at least one more game this year maybe 2. Highly doubt they will beat clemson on the road and Wake will want revenge on Hartman. They are above average and that’s about it. No disrespect to them. We are just that fraudulent at the moment. We have good players who haven’t been coached and can’t tackle. Last 2 weeks the most missed tackles in all of college football. This is a talented team, much more than ND and ND is not well coached. You can now do the math. How do you explain it?

        Liked by 1 person

      2. you just explained it to me and didn’t even know it……ND has the talent to be undefeated but the coaching is the limiting factor….

So 6-2 is who they are, coaching being the limited factor. With better coaching, IMO, that team is undefeated. They went toe to toe to with Ohio St. and the game could have gone either way.

Their recent loss was more of a coach not having his team ready….what is often called a look-a-head game or a trap game. The guy is still learning on the job. his first job as a D1 head coach

      3. Well the Irish are still better coached than the trojans. In 50+ years of closely watching this team and with a coaching background, Last saturday against AZ this team was the most unprepared USC team I have ever seen, and that includes the Smith years, the hackett years, the heckle and jeckell years, and the Claydoh years. (and that’s saying something). Today was the battle of a reasonably talented team vs a more talented team to see who had the most inept staffs. I guess we can agree on that.

  17. Without Grinch the Offense of the Coach of the Gimmick Offense that Can Be Stopped by Any Talented Team or Competent Coach would be more recognizably crap.

Riley gets extra possessions from a gambling defense, (notice how USC led the nation in takeaways even when they were crap at actually stopping other teams from scoring). For Riley that’s the best possible scenario.

But make no mistake, Lincoln Riley’s offense is crap, and the core of why his teams can never and will never win anything meaningful. He doesn’t even luck out or back into winning something meaningful which is actually shocking.

But SC is stuck with him, with that contract. They knew what they were buying.
