USC Sunday Buzz: Lincoln Riley’s Fall From Grace

Has a USC coach ever experienced as quickly a fall from grace as Lincoln Riley?

The fans are up in arms. They are tired of his answers. Tired of his stubborness. Tired of his defense. And now tired of his offense.

The question going forward is whether Riley has any answers? He doesn’t seem to have a Plan B so it could be tough. He also doesn’t like playing good teams. USC is 2-3 under Riley against ranked teams.

By the way, I was skeptical even the day he got hired.

Before answering that, don’t let Riley off the hook.

USC’s wide receivers overall are overrated but it’s also true that Riley doesn’t put them in their best position to succeed. Look at Dorian Singer. He caught 66 passes in 12 games last season. He has 14 receptions in 7 games this season.

What is Riley doing wrong to fail to utilize Singer’s talents?

  • Correction: Notre Dame said it handed Lincoln Riley the worst loss of his career. But he lost 63-28 loss to LSU in the College Football Playoff following the 2019 season.

    3. When ‘Ol Mule Shoe said he was keeping Alex Grinch, Shaun Nua and the other idiot Donte Williams right after the humiliating loss to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl, you knew this season was a throw away.

      For ‘Ol Mule Shoe to not make any changes from last season with the shit defensive staff he has is just ridiculous. The defense this year is just as bad, if not worse than last season.

      With any luck ‘Ol Mule Shoe will hit the road after his Ladiea of Troy get massacred by Utah, Washington, Oregon and UCLA

      1. Yes, we should fire those numbskull coordinators- problem is, Riley knows no respected D coordinator will come to his program because the Air Raid offense is where defenses come to die. He’s forced to keep them because who else is gonna come here under his watch. LR is living in a fantasy world and wants to keep it that way. Similar to Helton- cant get prized O line recruits, non transfer D line recruits, nor CB’s. After the 1st game and saw the same ol same ol team- I told my buddies- gonna be an 8-4 team at best.   3. When USC hires a coach that actually knows what defense is maybe they’ll get back on track, but they seem enamored with coaches who want to play 7 on 7 football, that’s never going to win them anything.

  5. Sparrow, it’s not like this is a one-off. Two ways to look at it: team is playing down to its competition or they are not very good. I kept thinking it was the former, but now I realize it’s the latter. And it’s not so much they are not good, but are underperforming and are poorly coached.
    I swear I keep waiting to hear that Riley is going thru a divorce or has some other factors going on in his life because USC doesn’t just look bad, they look unprepared and we are 💯 getting out-coached!!

  9. Watching replay of this game is so aggravating.

    USC receivers are a complete mess. Why do they have 2 receivers coaches but no special teams coach? Hire one brilliant receivers coach and fire Simmons and Huard.

    The lack of decent tight ends is a problem. They cant block and dont really catch either.

    They should be giving Michael Jackson alot more touches, he catches the ball.

He is still building,but after the ND debacle/reality check he hopefully will also understand that is one game ALL SC fans hate to lose…as John McKay said after the 51-0 debacle…I am never losing to ND again…he didn’t.   13. In an effort to maintain a positive culture within the program, Riley is loathe to publicly criticize players and coaching staff. I was as mad as anyone last night about how USC played, but Riley knows the performance issues and is working to correct them. Watch the Fox pre-game interview with Riley; specifically the questions from Urban Meyer. I don’t get the breakdown with the offensive line, but Riley will address it.

      1. You expect USC to win out? That would be crazy. This team has huge problems that cant be addressed this year. I would advise Riley to write off this year as a development year and focus on what he needs to do to make this program elite going forward.

        There is a reason USC is ranked #18 in the recruiting rankings. Players know the coaching staff is not elite. You cant build a dominant team unless you are in the top 5 programs in high school recruiting.

        We should have learned this year that the transfer portal DOES NOT lead to immediate success, or maybe not even long term success. How many players have been slam dunks? Mekhi Blackmon was last year. Jamil Muhammed is this year. But so far, Jarrett Kingston and Michael Tarquin are not plug and play. Pregnon is also not living up to expectations yet, although he could get really good by next year. Shane Lee wasnt a slam dunk, even Mason Cobb seems to not be delivering.

        The core problem with the transfer portal is that players expect to play their first year at your program and maybe it takes time for players to learn your system and get coached up in your system.

        Bottom line, you cant just expect to get a bunch of transfers into your program and make it elite. You need an elite coaching staff, across the board. College is about development, taking raw athletic ability and making it a team.

  17. Lincoln and his sht offense and his con job were already known and the reality well established. People that were for it knew what they were doing. They even knew some braindead rah rahs would cheer and the folks in the media that don’t give a fck and were even cheering on Helton until he was fired would go along to watch the flames in the dumpster fire that is ‘SC athletics get bigger.   18. Riley appeared to shellshocked. I think he’s been reading and believing what a genius he is……and he’s really a copy cat of Graham Harrell who like him, copies the Pirate. Riley did not make adjustments because he was too incapacitated to think and he set up the whole team for failure.
    I think it’s a sign of poor leadership to breakdown in a crisis. I have been an executive for two decades and I know action needs to be done as quickly as possible or you lose.

  19. Riley should have made adjustments right from the first quarter. He was shellshocked because he has believed his press. He’s no genius, he’s a copy cat of the air raid. Mike Leach could operate that with the right people, but never with Alabama type of success. Now we have graham harrell 11 who is getting paid too much and that should go to a quality DC and SPECIAL TEAM COACH. We are taking a beating on special teams.

  20. It’s not complicated. If you review tape for let’s say the last 10 cfb national champions, the formula is quite clear. Yes a solid, productive offense, based on a power running game and efficient even advanced passing game. Some misdirection to throw off the scouting reports. You demonstrate to the “high school” kids you’re competent, balanced, and not single focused. You disallow discussions in the recruits living rooms by competing coaches that you’re a gimmick coach who is more Texas Tech than Georgia. If LR turns this season into a development season, one whereas it’s not only the players who become more focused, but for LR to prove he’s transformative, not the second coming of the Pirate sitting in a blue blood program. Yes, we need better assistant coaches. AD Jen, time to do your job and earn your keep.
