More On That USC Defensive Breakdown

I got a call from a Pac-12 coach today who saw the video of Notre Dame’s 46-yard TD pass against USC.

The coach said a big problem was USC had a player who delayed rushing the quarterback.

“(When no one is back deep) every body has to rush toward the quarterback immediately,” the coach said. “The guys in pass coverage are counting on the quarterback being forced to get rid of the ball. The pressure’s gotta come quicker because the USC corners aren’t talented enough to cover receivers too long.”

  4. Scott – did you ask the coach whether CRW was supposed to let that receiver run past him, forcing Bullock to cover that man and thereby not providing cover deep for the other receiver?

    I dont think Grinch is a great coach, but I think alot of people dont understand the coverages and assume this was a bad schematic call instead of a bad play by one of the players.

    I dont know the full truth here, but I see lots of plays where it seems like the players dont know where they are supposed to be.

    If Grinch is putting players in a call that they dont fully understand that is bad coaching, so I’m not making excuses for him.

    1. Grenches defense is too complex. These aren’t pros who have 10-12 hours a day to study the playbook. They have to balance football with academics. They don’t understand the playbook well enough to just play on instinct. They’re thinking too much. When you think too much, you play slow.

    No team can come back from those freaking interceptions. Ok, enough said.

  7. I wonder if the new AD would hire Riley? I think she would only do it if Riley were going to hire a new defensive coach.

    It turns out that everything Bohn did was terrible. Riley is flashy, but not a great coach on numerous levels. Moving to the Big 10 might not have been as good an idea as either forcing the Pac-12 to pay us more, or going quasi-independent for football only, and signing a big deal with a network. At the very least, we should have had a guaranteed ability to block Oregon from following us to the Big 10, in writing.

    This offense is starting to look like Graham Harrell.

    2. It’s clear he doesn’t make in game adjustments al a “look at film.” helton. Saban, on the other hand, makes adjustments right after a stupid play occurs. Of course, Saban is both intelligent and capable. Riley is a Leach copycat and hasn’t been intelligent enough to adjust. We are doomed once again. Folt posted she’s proud of this team, she’s an idiot, too. She should be fired fired for numerous reason. I really cannot go through another siege of stupidity. I see no pleasure watching stupidity prevail on the field and I’m supposed to keep donating. NOT!!!
