Morning Buzz: USC Not As Bad As You Think

Lincoln Helton, I mean Lincoln Riley, on Trojans Live last night.

“We know we haven’t been at our best for a few weeks. We haven’t been clicking quite on all cylinders. We’re very aware. When things aren’t going your way in this game, you can feel like it’s really, really far away, and in reality, it’s not.”

I guess he no longer feels the “untrained eyes” of the fans were wrong when they pointed out the defense’s shortcomings. Or when people criticized the offensive line. Or the will to run the ball. Or the lack of fundamentals like blocking.

“It’s hard to be creative when you’re not very good with the basics,” a Pac-12 coach said. “If you are scouting them, they have good running backs but don’t commit to the run. That’s a trademark of Mike Leach guys.”

    2. Lincoln Riley’s statements are a bad sign for Trojans football, because he’s addressing everything but the real issues. He is in denial, because he’s brainwashed by Mike Leaches philosophy. I hope this doesn’t linger for a decade as it did with Clay Helton, so hopefully the new athletic administration will recognize the problem and make a decision. The move to the Big Ten will expose Riley even further, as will the remainder of this season’s schedule.

      1. This is where a good athletic director will step in and talk to the coach. Riley needs to hear one thing. As a head coach, he needs to demand performance and forget friendships and loyalty. That goes for coaches as well as players. It is fine to be loyal if someone is struggling through a specific time, but if there is a track record of only failure, you cant stand by them. It isnt fair to the team.

        As a fan, Riley owes ME nothing. But he DOES owe his players the chance to get developed, have a career in football and play for a top-notch winning team.

As others have said – perhaps you Sparrow – Air Leach is very entertaining but it doesn’t and hasn’t produced any real champions…..having said that this is year 2 and considering the state of the program left by that grinning clown Helton and Williams short term it is still primed to move – PC didn’t do it in year 1 or 2 – it was years 3 – 5 when the domination plus the recruiting rose. Not saying we can expect the same but we’re still in need of dominant big linemen.

      1. Dude, PC inherited a total shit show from Hackett, he had no portal or NIL to right the ship ASAP. But lets take a look at how he REALLY did in the first two years.

        Year one, he loses 4 games by a combined total of 14 points to 12th ranked Kansas St, 7th ranked Oregon, 11th ranked UBUB and unranked Stanford. He lost at ND by 11.

        Year two. He loses at #24 Kansas State by 7 and at #17 WSU in OT by 3 and USC ends up ranked # 4

      3. In 2002 USC started 3-2, the last loss coming against WSU early in early October. They then ran off 8 straight wins, including dominating performances against UCLA, Norte Dame, and Iowa, then ranked #3. So it’s fair to say that by midway through PC’s second season at USC he already had the team performing at a high level.

    4. That comment by the coach is plain stupid. USC ran the ball how many times against Notre Dame and had an average per yard of the mid 2’s.

      It isnt about “committing” to the run. It is about using the run effectively. The o-line cant block, so taking the ball out of the hands of the best playmaker would be stupid.

      There are many problems with this team and coach Riley, but the run/pass balance is not a major one.

I see that woke universities ( Harvard, Penn ) are facing the backlash from big donors for their silence on not condemning their students who cheered Hamas for attacking Israel and now some universities have signed a letter condemning Hamas for their attack, didn’t see Carol’s name on it, wonder why ?

    On Monday’s show at 7 P.M. they say the show is live. However, they say to follow them on Youtube or twitter. I went to Youtube and played the show on my phone. However, I could advance the show to as far as I wanted and to the end of the show and I went back to the radio to see if they would say the same thing. They did. So my question is, why doesn’t someone come out and say the show is taped? It should be Trojan Taped, instead of Trojan Live. Another lie from SC. You can’t get a straight and honest answer from Riley. He sounds like a walking excuse. Helton 2.0 is here and will be here until he leaves. He knows the oline and defense suck at best and he has not resolved that. He knows he has to recruit here in the Southland and the top recruits aren’t coming. This is a Larry Smith and Helton problem.

    SC will lose to Utah. that defense will eat Williams alive. It sucks to be a Trojan fan now a days.

  13. The expectations for the team was ridiculous. He isn’t Saban. When he retained Grinch we knew it was still a feeling out period aka guaranteed losses. The coaches he should have brought with him from OU did not come like the line coach.

    Expect at least two more losses cause of the defense.

    so that is an encouraging sign of Trojan defensive improvement
    which might be needed via Ore&Wash

    And Z Branch caught a few hard Irish hits but still got up so it looks like he will be on the field against the Utes, certainly a plus
