USC Morning Buzz: Lincoln Riley And The NFL

In NFL coaching circles, the talk is that Lincoln Riley is putting out feelers about taking a job in the NFL next season.

To be clear, this chatter was going around last week and has nothing to do with USC’s loss to Notre Dame.

The word is Riley would be open to an NFL job if he could follow Caleb Williams to the same franchise. If the Chicago Bears had the No. 1 pick, it would probably ideal for this theory.

The other part of the theory is that an NFL team would tell Riley who to hire, especially on the defensive staff, to avoid some of the pratfalls that have happened in college.

If Riley is serious about wanting to coach only 10 more years, it makes sense that he would go to the NFL sooner than later.

      3. The baby cant handle being in a frying pan. He wants out because he realizes his coaching shortcomings and how they will be magnified when Caleb leaves- Scotty was on the Dan Patrick show this morning and Dan focused on this same issue- Caleb erased the warts of LR’s program. So great to hear this message get sent out and let Riley know he cant hide. Either jump ship, or he better scramble to find an elite staff- cuz thing are swirling down the drain. On top of anything else- recruits on the fence are gonna jump off SC real quick!

Dan must be desperate! ……or is Scott more desperate?

Gabby: I didn’t use the term “white guy.” The CEO of Ocean Gate used the term white guy. I suppose that reading comprehension isn’t one of your strengths. But since you brought my wife into it, something that you would never do if we met face to face, let’s meet up Mr. keyboard tough guy or are you going to chickensh*t out like you normally do. I work out at a boxing gym in Pasadena, CA. Name a date and time and I will make a reservation.

  2. How would you like to be ‘freddie?’

As mentioned on the previous thread Wiley would be giving up a lot if he walked away from the SC job at $100+ million, but with this crazed outcry from the “pitchforked” SC mob who would blame him?

  3. Scott is so desperate for content that he’s willing to fabricate some lame-ass story about Riley sniffing around the NFL. The blog needs to be renamed “Wolfie’s Daily Gossup”. Where voices in the head and the lack of objective reporting are the norm.

This is exactly why there is only one former college HC in the NFL, Pete Carroll, and he had prior HC experience in the NFL.

  4. In other Scott Wolf imaginings he understands there will be a moon landing. Oh, that’s already been done, huh?

Wiles just not have an NFL type personality, he is cut out to teach college kids. He doesn’t appear to be comfortable in front of a microphone or an audience other than with his Trojan kids,
so I believe macho NFL guys would turn him off

    1. I would tend to agree with that. He doesn’t seem like NFL head coaching material. I think if he went to the NFL, it would be as an offensive coordinator initially but under that scenario, he would be making way less money than he makes at Usc. Also, you have to factor in his family. They have an amazing compound in Manhattan Beach. Why would they wanna leave that?

      1. Who has coach 162 taught at USC ? Is anyone getting better ?

Coach 162 isn’t going to the NFL to be a OC, it’s head coach or nothing and there are plenty of idiotic owners who would hire him, just look at who hired Meyer, Hue Jackson, Holtz, Petrino, Saban, Kingsbury,Spurrier, Rhule, the list is endless.

Ever think Coach 162 and his wife don’t like the lifestyle of So Cal ?

        Liked by 2 people

  5. This would make sense. Riley seems to care more about his lifestyle than building a college dynasty. I think the new AD will force Riley to fire his buddy and hire a real defensive staff and maybe even replace other elements of the program that are not working, so this would mean changes Riley might not like. Plus Riley doesnt seem to have his heart in recruiting.

College football coaching requires a commitment that is full time, not leaving much room for a personal life.

It might be good for USC as well, as Riley is not leveraging the USC brand to build a real effective recruiting organization. That is what is going to create dynasties – recruiting that gives an unfair advantage. The director of recruiting must be fired as well. Any coach who either cant recruit or cant develop players must go.

    1. Coach 162 doesn’t seem to have his heart in much of anything, guy seems lazy as fuck and entitled, hope he does follow Williams out, then they can both be flops in the NFL because Caleb isn’t going to cut in the NFL, but he’ll be rich !

  6. Scooter,

If Riley is serious about SC, then after the season he has to fire the dcordnator, Donte Williams, and the oline coach. He needs to get the Trojans tougher. they are being pushed around. That will hurt them when they go to the Big 10.

But the Arcadia chick, Cohen, won’t do a thing. She has not experience in dealing with the history of SC football and what it means to SC, L.A., the fans, and the nation. Garrett got it. SC is in a world of hurt.

Where is the nd report card from last year and this year?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. The report card is comin’ right up, PT, but there will be a further delay in getting the 2022 one

Or maybe Scott reasoned that an SC report card full of “Fs” might not make for fun reading

    2. I get that you don’t like the new AD for whatever reason. The fact that she doesn’t know USC is actually refreshing, seeing as how we have been there with Haden and Swann. Times change.

  9. Despite Wiley’s suggestion that his players not read the ND commentary I’m sure they have seen how most SCers are calling them ‘bums.’

I would think they might have a bit of a chip on their shoulders and have a mental edge with the Utes stampeding in.
Of course whether that will be enough is up for debate. Afterall, coach John McKay used to say of his wife, “She is emotional as hell”
but can’t play football worth a lick

    1. I’m picking Utah. I still think that LR is a really good coach. He’s only 40. He’s still learning the trade. He’s also got to deal with NIL. He’s not going to get the great players if he is going up against schools that will pay big time. A great player could be living a block from USC and has followed USC all of his life but he will still go to the one who hands him the most money. I still think that SC(under LR) will be great in the future….just not this year. A great quote from McKay

  10. I really do have Wolf typo disease; this was just posted on the now defunct prior thread

I imagine Wiley’s wife is lamenting, ‘My guy gets SC to forget about Helton, gets the Trojans to the brink of the playoffs in his first year,
and now they call him a “Dumb Okie” as they tar-and-feather him out of town

And yeah I have an ocean view but there is no way to the beach

  11. Of course Wiles has children who I’m sure are now well entrenched in their new school with new friends. He says he doesn’t want to
“miss out” with ‘family’ but if he is off to the NFL he may have to leave behind his family at least for a while

So he may just weather this typical “L.A. sports team storm’

    1. The ticket office didn’t care much this year if people let their tickets go, because they and many fans had this notion that we were on the way to an NC: “No big deal if you let them go! They are lined up for your seats!”

Going to be funny in another year or two, if Riley ends up never doing better than 2 or 3 losses a season and they lose all those bandwagon fans.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. My thought as well So Cal. If USC loses to Utah, the L.A. fan base will implode. You will only get 66% capacity at games that were expected to be sellouts and that will effect recruiting.

Can you tell the blog how many college coaches are consistently losing less than 2 games a year…..I’m sure it’s less than 1%……just go back to the last 5 seasons… we will wait for the results

Do you put any thought into the stuff you post, NO!

      3. Yup, Plow Horse. From 2010-2020 the ticket office would immediately offer a 10% discount if someone didn’t renew. If that didn’t work, they would sometimes go to as much as 25% because there were not getting butts in the seats.

We can see from the dumbass perspective of someone who’s never had and never will have season tickets that she wouldn’t understand. LMAO
