USC Morning Buzz: Changes Threatened But Let’s See What Happens

USC offensive line coach Josh Henson isn’t winning any awards the past year-and-a-half for the play of the offensive line.

And it’s a bad sign when you say every spot is open midway through the season.

“Every spot is up for debate. I would say at this point, the one guy that’s played really, really solid would be left tackle and (Jonah) Monheim,” Henson said Wednesday. “Other than that, we’ve probably talked position moves at every spot.”

Instead of listening to a coach, watch what USC has done: Mason Murphy played most of the Notre Dame game at right tackle after Michael Tarquin got benched. Otherwise, there haven’t been any changes.

This is where the failure to sign elite high school prospects hurts USC. It has a bunch of projects for depth. Let’s see if any real changes occur against Utah.

    1. 100% TFL- The LR hype machine talked about how great an addition Tarquin was and how much better he was going to help the O line- once again LR ignored the O line and tried to fix it w reject transfers instead of spending time recruiting quality O line HS kids. His transfer portal model is blowing up. Personally, I don’t think he cares because when was the last time you heard about Riley spending time personally to go see a 5 star O line recruit?

      1. slo pa-troll, you know what stalking and obsessed looks like- 124 out of 127 consecutive posts mentioning or directed at Gabby.

Obsess: preoccupy or fill the mind of (someone) continually, intrusively, and to a troubling extent.

Stalk: 1. pursue or approach stealthily. 2. harass or persecute (someone) with unwanted and obsessive attention.

Take your own advice, you sound like a hypocrite; “but several people have suggested So Cal seek psychiatric help!! He is in some serious denial.”

  1. Maybe most of the offensive line guys are about the same in quality-
C+? Not quite ready for ‘prime’ (NFL) time
Maybe they’re better suited for a planned ‘running game’
They’ve got 2 fine backs to start with

  2. But this Williams kid comes from good stock,
is confident and talented. Might need every
drop of that talent against a “3 in a row over SC”
Utah team teemed with the firey blood of the

  3. When crowds yell out “Defense! Defense!”
they don’t mean it the same way as when SC says “defense”
    Meaning pitiful beyond awful
The parting of the Red Sea has got nothing on these guys
That Trojan defense might as well voluntarily SURRENDER the touchdown
and that way it can quickly get the ball back to the offense

    1. I love your optimism!!!! I see the team refocused, coming out with great energy and giving the Utes an ass whipping……All the bitches full of skepticism can fuck off.

  4. USC did recruit two elite OL last year in Elijah Paige and Alana Noa. I think Jacob Monheim will return next year along with Mason Murphy who are both talented. Pregnon has underperformed but is talented and they should get Gino Quinones back from injury for a sixth year. That is the nucleus of a solid offensive line. Hopefully, with more time in Henson’s system, we will see a marked improvement. I really don’t think the problem is a lack of talent.

    1. No way Monheim returns. You are right that Paige, Noa, Pregnon and maybe Murphy and Quinones are the core for next year. But that is a very inexperienced core. Maybe they should write off this year and just put Paige and Noa on the field and develop things for next year.

If there is any way to get Paige playing time at left tackle they should do that.

  5. USC, LSU & Colorado have the most Portal recruits,
and all started off well but now are falling from grace.

  6. The o-line coach has shown he isnt very good. He moved Kingston from left tackle to right guard and moved Pregnon from right guard to left guard. Why? Pregnon should have stayed at right guard and got developed there. Then he could have Noa as the backup at left guard and Noa could advance to a starter, if needed.

He had Tarquin at left tackle and then moved him to right tackle after Spring Camp. He moved Monheim from the right side to left tackle.

I think all this movement has not allowed anyone to develop and the unit to solidify.

Monheim is probably the only guy they trust at left tackle. But can you move Pregnon back to the right guard position now and have Noa at left guard and then put Murphy at left tackle and have the two seniors on the right side sit down?

If Paige is ready to play the better config would be Paige at left tackle, Noa at left guard, Dedich, Pregnon, Monheim. But you cant put freshmen out there mid-season after not playing much. Maybe they move Dedich to right guard and bring in their backup center?

This is what I was saying the other day about experienced transfers. Maybe they are in the transfer portal for a reason. If Kingston was really good as a left tackle, you needed to keep him there. I doubt he is such a stellar player that he could make the transition to the other side this late in his career.

My bottom line is that USC gets players that are as good as Utah on the o-line, but they dont develop players at any position well.

Riley’s coaching staff is looking more and more like a different version of Helton’s staff.

  7. zion branch was in the game for 16 snaps and had 4 tackles???

he needs to replace Bryson now.

maybe part of the reason the defense was a little better was that Max Williams and Bryson Shaw were not on the field.

they need to stop playing favorites and play the guys who deliver on Saturdays.

  8. A lot of problems for SC will be somewhat healed with a Utah win.
Losing 4 in a row to end the series would be a nasty Utah sendoff to SC
Before the ND game I thought, “If Celeb loses to ND I have to see it to believe it.” I feel the same way about the Utes
