If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

USC has had 10 men on the field the past two games. Will it get a hat trick against Utah?

  • As a part of the fallout from two USC students being arrested for allegedly stealing jerseys at the NFL Draft, a School of Journalism faculty member must accompany Annenberg student reporters on football road trips to chaperone.

A chaperone? Is this 1953? It’s nice work if you can get it.

By the way, one of the students arrested last spring was 41 years old. Did he need a chaperone?

I discussed whether Lincoln Riley go to the NFL with Dan Patrick on Thursday.

And now for some history:

  • When USC was going to replace Jess Hill as football coach, it contacted a couple legends: Bud Wilkinson of Oklahoma and Duffy Daugherty of Michigan State. They were believed to be initially interested but then the NCAA placed USC on probation in November, 1956.

Wilkinson went 31-0 at Oklahoma from 1954-56 with two national titles. Daugherty had gone 16-3 at Michigan State from 1955-56.

Another candidate was Jordan Olivar of Yale, who had L.A. ties because he coached at Loyola University from 1949-51. USC eventually promoted Trojan assistant coach Don Clark.

Remember in 1950 USC got turned down by Bear Bryant.

BANQUETS, BEAUTY QUEENS AND LUNCHEONS

  • The 1965 Los Angeles Home Show at the Sports Arena had three queens: From left, Lucinda Smith of Newport Beach; Dianne Libby of Panorama City, and Yvonne Arnett of Pasadena, were selected on April 9, 1965. Yvonne was the wife of USC/Rams football player Jon Arnett.
  • Marlin McKeever was in a 1965 episode of Perry Mason titled “The Case of the 12th Wildcat.” Here he is with offensive lineman Joe Scibelli. They played members of the fictional L.A. Wildcats, who were really members of the L.A. Rams.

In the photo below on the far left is Lindon Crow, the former USC defensive back who led the NFL in interceptions in 1956. Crow played an assistant coach in the episode. In the center of the photo is a youthful Roman Gabriel.

The episode was directed by former USC All-American Jesse Hibbs.

Below is McKeever in a 1963 episode of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett.

  • This is fascinating. The 1969 film, “Number One” starred Charlton Heston as an aging New Orleans Saints quarterback. Former USC star Mike Henry (52) played a member of the Saints but his character played college football at Georgetown.

Ironically, No. 62 next to Henry is introduced in this scene as a former USC player. It’s former NFL player Ernie Barnes, who attended North Carolina Central.

Now the good part: Barnes became a famous artist. His best-known painting, “The Sugar Shack” was used on the TV show, “Good Times” and is on the cover of a Marvin Gaye album. A duplicate of the painting was sold at Christie’s last year for $15.2 million. Eddie Murphy owns the original.

Barnes is great in “Number One.” He was named “Sports Artist of the 1984 Olympic Games” and in 1987 the Lakers commissioned him for a painting of the World Champions titled, “Fastbreak.”

In December, 1959 Barnes was drafted in the 10th round by the then-World Champion Baltimore Colts. He was originally selected in the eighth round by the Washington Redskins, who renounced the pick minutes after discovering he was African-American.

A Bavarian restaurant 2 miles from the USC campus? Saugages, schnitzel and pretzels after a football game? In 1956, it could happen.

  • This huge artwork of Howard Jones used to hang in a lounge on the third floor of the Student Union building. I’d love to know what happened to it but USC has a tradition of just throwing stuff out it no longer wants. Jess Hill posed in front of it when he was hired as football coach.

  3. SC’s defense guy Grinch was asked if he saw “progress” with his unit in the ND game to which he said “I absolutely did see it.”

    With the offense, Wiley said, “We’ve got to carry over what we’re doing on the practice field and go turn it loose and go out cut it loose and just play.” This is a bigger issue for us right now than maybe the preparation.

    Sounds as if it is a team-wide ‘loss of confidence’ problem due to too many close games and now the ND embarrassment. No better cure for those Trojan football blues than a solid win over UHA
