USC Will Face Another Mr. November

A coach had to watch the USC-Cal game for scouting purposes and zeroed in on the defense.

“They have bad technique and fundamentals,” he said. “But the schemes aren’t working either and they don’t really change so I don’t think you can just say it’s the players’ fault.

“All that said, I sort of feel sorry for (Alex) Grinch. He’s going to pay the price for this.”

  • If you want an indication of this season, maybe the most consistent performer on the team is punter Eddie Czaplicki, who averages 44.59 yards per kick. Of course, he is a transfer so we can’t even credit the coaches for him.
  • Kalen DeBoer is 8-1 in November while head coach at Fresno State and Washington. If you throw in his record at the University of Sioux Falls, he is 27-1 in November.

  1. Has an assistant coach (Grinch) ever caught more negativity, which makes you wonder how did he get this far in his coaching career if he is so bad?

    1. Why are you opposed to America turning into Zimbabwe?

Is there something about that nation you don’t like? Anything in particular?

  2. Scooter,

Good journalism. The question is, will Riley throw Grinch under the bus at the end of the season or will he take the blame. As a head coach, you gotta take the blame, but then you fix the problem. We will see.

    1. Grinch’s performance has thrown himself “under the bus” and whether Wiley will ‘fess up as an accomplice is questionable

      1. Exactly! I’ve been in the unenviable position of managing people out. But if done correctly, by the time it’s come to that, they had already committed to meeting expectations and know when they’ve clearly missed them!

It’s so funny how you get humiliated daily and come back for more gruel to be dumped on your head the next day. Most people would have some pride and go elsewhere… but not you.

      2. LMAO! I’m not the one who insists on visiting a blog every day and bitching about what Scott Wolf does. Dumbass acts as if someone puts a gun to her head and forces her to come here.

Disagreeing with him occasionally is one thing. But she takes it to a whole ‘nother level. As so many have said, it’s a shame she doesn’t get the help she desperately needs.

  3. Grinch is gone. He knows it. The only question is when do they announce it.

“How did he get this far in his coaching career if he is this bad.”

Amazing how that works. Graham Harrell failed at USC and then failed at West Virginia and is now failing at Purdue. Kliff Kingsbury’s record is not much better and he got an NFL head coaching job. Go figure. Hiring decisions tend to be as much emotional as rational.

Always liked the Bill Parcells quote to his Giants team – “See the scoreboard up there, that’s who you are. “

    1. It isnt just in coaching, most people are hired based on past experience rather than talent or ability. It is the biggest reason for failure in any organization.

  4. of course it is not the players fault. USC gets a higher quality athlete on average than other Pac-12 schools. they just dont actually develop anyone.

DaBoer is 27-1 in November because he is a smart head coach. he learns over time and improves his team. Riley teams get worse with more coaching.

if the AD doesnt get heavily involved, I find it unlikely that Riley will change much. he strikes me as far too emotionally fragile. he would be much better as the “genius” OC/QB coach for a really good head coach.

it is the Peter Principle on display.

  5. First LRs salary is an important factor. At least it can be. Should LR continue next year and thereafter, dismissing the tremendous weaknesses of Grinch and others, coliseum attendance plus recruiting continue to slide further down to dangerous levels, a buyout becomes a strategy to save USC football. A 3 million / yr buyout versus a 10 million/ yr buyout are quite different. Whether it’s a fiscal concern or on principle, I see Folt digging in and wagging her finger, no way.
Second, as previously mentioned, I believe LR will go the “add an analyst” route and keep “Big Score” Grinch but LR will keep a real real real close eye this time. We are looking at 2* defensive recruits in 2025.
Should the worse play out, AD Jen should fire Grinch and others and force LR to deal. He probably will not. Perhaps one season and he’s gone. He quits. The contract voids. Seriously can’t believe we have to contemplate this.
