If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

This weekend is Homecoming at USC. Long gone are the days when there was a Thursday night parade down Wilshire Blvd., a big rally/star-studded show at Bovard Auditorium, a parade of floats from the campus to the Coliseum or a dance Saturday night after the game.

The 1:30 p.m. Homecoming game kickoff is mostly a thing of the past too.

But this is the one day of the week when I get to have some fun and reminisce about USC, so I’m picking some of my favorite Homecoming moments.

  • Vampira, who hosted a TV show in Los Angeles at the time on KABC-TV (Channel 7), is driven in the Alpha Tau Omega car at the USC homecoming parade in 1954. Vampira also appeared in the low-budget classic “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” The dialogue was so bad she refused to speak in the movie. But what a coup to get her at the parade.
  • Imagine what a highlight it must have been for decades afterward that Kirk Douglas crowned Helen of Troy in 1949. Douglas headed the jury that selected the queen. Just five months before this picture was taken, Douglas starred in the boxing movie, “Champion,” a role that earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Academy Awards.

The parade through Downtown L.A. drew a crowd of 65,000.

Bob Hope would often perform in a USC variety show at Bovard Auditorium for Homecoming like this one in 1945. His 1949 show featured Doris Day.

  • USC’s homecoming was so big that in 1947, singer Jo Stafford performed her NBC radio show live from the Shrine Auditorium as part of the festivities. Prior to the show, Stafford was named top female artist played on juke boxes by the trade publication Coinbox. By 1953, she signed a four-year $1 million deal with CBS-TV and by 1954 became the second artist behind Bing Crosby to sell 25 million records.
  • Dorothy Dandridge performed at the 1951 USC Homecoming variety show. Four years later, she was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her role in Carmen Jones.
  • The 1965 “Helen of Troy” was Cathy Crosby (white dress), who as an actress was better known as Cathy Lee Crosby. She was the first “independent” Helen of Troy at USC, meaning she did not belong to a sorority.

Ironically, in 1975 she played Helen of Troy in an episode of “Kolchak: The Night Stalker.” Crosby, who was a tennis player, also played at Wimbledon twice between 1967-70.

  • By 1968, USC could still get Deep Purple to perform at The Troy Week Ball, where Helen of Troy was crowned. Deep Purple was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
  • New York Giants manager Leo Durocher and his wife, actress Laraine Day, were the grand marshals of the 1951 USC Homecoming parade. During their marriage, Day was referred to as the “First Lady of Baseball.” She even hosted Day With the Giants, a 15-minute television interview program broadcast before New York Giants home games.
  • Here is Jayne Mansfield at the USC Homecoming Parade in 1956. Mansfield posed for pictures and signed autographs before an estimated crowd of 100,000. The parade was held on the Miracle Mile with Danny Thomas as grand marshal.
  • In 1968, Cynthia Watson became the first African-American student crowned Helen of Troy. Mimi Orr, the 1967 Helen of Troy, crowned Watson at the 1968 Troy Week Ball.

A year later, Watson had a small part in the TV show “Daniel Boone” that starred Fess Parker, who got his master’s degree in theater history from USC.

ANOTHER USC-CAL MEMORY

  • Last weekend’s trip to Berkeley had a lame moment where the USC band was prevented from performing on the field before the game.

But look at what happened in 1977. USC cheerleaders and band members stole the hat of a Cal band member and hospitalized a Cal band assistant who tried to retrieve it.

  • If that wasn’t enough, both benches emptied when Charles White thought Cal’s Anthony Washington took too much time to get off him after a tackle. Washington was ejected for throwing the first punch.

  2. Well, SC football once was the only game in town and the Trojans had half the town turn out one year when it embarked from a train after having beat ND, and then the Rams, Dodgers and Lake-show crowded out SC

    1. Yes, not as many entertainment options before 1960.

      TV was limited, no internet or cable. Just vinylv records, radio and movies predominantly.

      Can’t compare past to today but funny as we age, we all talk about those bygone days.

      Appreciate the trip down memory lane, now time to move on and beat the Huskies.

      Since everyone is down on USC, I will go out on a limb and predict USC 42 WA 31.

      1. Udub gives up 400 yards a game, and their run defense is not great. Would like to see plenty of carries for Marshawn Lloyd to keep Penix off the field. Washington’s top 2 WRs have combined for about 100 catches already, and average about 18 yards per catch. Our DBs can’t cover mediocre WRs.

    2. Actually the Bruins had more success than USC in the 1950s but that didn’t seem to stop the Trojan administration, faculty, staff, students and alumni from having a great time. There really is no good excuse for those traditions to have ever been ended besides lazy, stupid, visionless incompetence.

  5. I wonder when the popularity of all the homecoming traditions, Helen of Troy, ect. started to fade. My guess is it began with the campus unrest in the late sixties and early seventies, anti-war and women’s liberation movements, followed by the demise of the fraternity and sorority systems. The popular kids were anti-establishment and no longer wanted to be associated with these traditions. Too bad. We may have lost something that was worth preserving.

      2. Kind of agree with you Rusoviet. That’s why I used the term “may have lost something.” I guess my point is that college should be fun. Go to the football game, attend a party and have a beer, take a ski trip with your buddies. I think college has become too competitive with the desire to achieve high grades at all costs. In a few years, many of these same students will be in a competitive workplace and have to bill out 50 hours per week, delay vacations or meet their revenue quota, ect. Maybe college is a time to make memories of free play and silliness.
