Lincoln Riley Needs To Adapt — Or Leave

When Lincoln Riley arrived at his $17 million house in Palos Verdes on Saturday night, he needed to make a decision.

Does he want to be a king or a football coach?

If he wants to be king, he should look for another job. In the NFL or at a school like Michigan, where fans might put him on a pedestal.

Because trying to be king at USC is not working. The arrogant act, where he is not answerable to anyone else, needs to end immediately. No one is buying it at USC.

Even after allowing 52 points and 527 yards to Washington, Riley was asked if he regretted how he handled the defense this season? “I’m not into the big picture questions right now,” he said.

He wasn’t into them last January when many of us demanded he make a change at defensive coordinator.

Riley doesn’t like answering tough questions. He doesn’t like dealing with anyone outside his small bubble of associates. This is what happens when you’re being paid $10 million a year and lionized as a coach at age 40. You think you know everything. He thought his act in Oklahoma would translate to L.A.

No chance. Especially after trashing the 2023 season.

No matter what else Riley does, he just blew his opportunity with a generational quarterback who did everything he could to beat Washington.

How many times did I say USC needed to have a sense of urgency this season because it was an opportunity that might never return. Look at next year’s schedule. Now imagine it without Caleb Williams at quarterback. It’s going to be a tough year.

I remembered today that when Riley got hired at USC, an Oklahoma beat writer said the Sooners got a little worse every year under Riley. It’s happened at a much faster rate at USC.

We all knew USC had problems with its defense and Riley refused to overhaul it. He couldn’t leave his bubble to hire new coaches. He knew better. He can’t be bothered to leave the McKay Center to interact with anyone because he is beyond reproach.

Well, now he is 7-3 and owner of some of the most horrendous stats in school history. And he still has to play Oregon.

USC needs new coaches and a humble head coach. If Riley can’t show a little humility, he should go too.

    1. With Alex Grinch, the more you suck at your position the more playing time you will get.

Mason Cobb, Bryson Shaw and Tackett Curtis suck big time and yet they’re always out there. They have another thing in common with each other besides sucking, they’re white.

Maybe Grinch gives them playing time because they’re white, doesn’t matter that they suck, as long as they’re white.

Gutless Gabby, friend of Dorothy: You said in response to another post where you reference my response to your attack on my family:

“Didn’t your old man teach you any mental toughness, doubt it”

My father grew up in the depression. His family could not afford to feed him so he had to live in an orphanage for a time. He was essentially on his own at age 14 and served in Korea at age 17 and earned a bronze star for valor in combat along with two purple hearts. He had 5 children in 7 years, the first 4 all boys. I was the youngest boy. My father taught mental and physical toughness indeed along with the responsibility of men to protect and provide for their family. He would never allow an insult like you have leveled against my wife and mother to go unrequited. You remain in my cross hairs my special friend. This is not over.

By the way, did your father teach mental toughness? Did you ever have a wife or daughter? Did you ever feel an obligation to protect them or can any internet yoyo say whatever they want about them without consequence. I still want a piece of your ass.

The problems with Alex Grinch are so myriad you just cant name all of them. Playing the wrong players, terrible schemes, lack of player techniques such as tackling and taking effective lines of attack, poor recruiting…

How could Riley be a good head coach and NOT see these things?

What ever happened to Raesjon Davis?

With this defense on one play you can say “the problem is the front seven” and on the next play, the problem is the secondary and on the next play, the problem is the linebackers…..etc

It really is the WHOLE defense.

Will there be ANY fans left? Heads need to roll in Heritage Hall as well.

The real problem starts at the top – Carol Folt. What has she done that has been successful? Name one thing. Oh, she has renamed practice fields in accordance with woke standards. Good one Carol.

I have little to no faith that the new AD was the right choice because she was picked by Carol.

    1. Worse yet, he destroyed Caleb’s chance for a historical second Heisman. If Riley is too immature to understand it’s about the school, the players and tradition not him or his questionable relationship with his failing DC., he needs to be replaced. Jonathan Smith could run circles around him with the talent USC has. How many quality recruits are going to sign after watching this pathetic season with lack of support for the players…especially a generational one like Caleb.

      1. Agree Carra. It is so frustrating to watch USC underperform and they have been doing that with few exceptions since Pete Carrol left almost 15 years ago. If Jonathon Smith or Kyle Whittingham had USC’s roster or recruiting base the team would finish in the top 5 virtually every year. How long do we have to endure mediocrity. I hate mediocrity and it has now become part of the football culture at USC with fans saying things like “well we lost but it was an entertaining game.”

    1. Caleb does far more for USC than Penix does for Washington. When Caleb is good, like he was last night, he puts his team on his shoulders. Penix would be horrible at SC, with the lack of receiver separation and the less than stellar o-line.

Caleb could be even better if they had focused on getting him to get the ball out fast in practices, but you have an idiot like Kliff Kingsbury who is probably encouraging the air raid principles in Caleb’s development.

I said all the way back to last year that Riley needed to have a program called “Without Superman”. Basically, the program should have evaluated the program, players and coaches without Caleb to bail them all out. I think if you did this, you would see that the only other area that is being recruited and developed properly is the running backs room. Kiel McDonald is a great coach and should be kept (Austin Jones was a very good replacement last night). I will also say that it is possible that as the o-line is replaced with players developed by Henson, it is possible that they turn out pretty good. Next year, Paige, Pregnon, Noa and Murphy might make a decent core line – maybe. I like the high school recruit they are brining in for center. There are some other young players they recruited that might also be developed into a good line. At least with the o-line, I can see problems being improved and changes made. It is the one area that is progressing over the year, if only a little. Receivers room needs just one coach, but I imagine Simmons is fine here.

Good to see Duce being played a bunch, even if he is making a few mistakes, you can see the raw potential in him. That one play called back, you can see his unnatural speed for such a big guy. His blocking will be elite (once he cleans up the holding). With the right schemes and coaching next year, Duce, Hudson, Lemon, Branch, Jakobi might be a step up in raw talent. Mario Williams has dropped so many balls, Rice is not nearly as elite in 50/50 balls as he could be, Dorian Singer is mysteriously not being used, MJ3 is real solid, but I expect he will leave due to competition in the receiver room.

I dont know if I agree that the S&C program needs to be changed. Maybe they need to tweak the program for the o and d-lines, but overall seems like players are developing. The problem with the o and d-lines is coaching (more on the d-line side).

The defense is a complete tear-down project. Level the thing and start over. There are some really great athletes that will be around next year. But they need to fire Grinch NOW and get a new DC in place so they can try to go back and get a few more players before the early commit deadline.

If Riley is not focused on the long term now, he is an idiot. 50% of his time should be dedicated to setting up the program to rebound next year.

7-5 is the likely record this season, just accept it and move forward.

Riley needs to change his tune on NIL and demand to be competitive in paying high school athletes. Transfers are a hit or miss gamble that is not the path to long term success.

      1. Agree that “Caleb needs to focus on getting the ball out quickly in practice.” He did that on a few throws in the first series and it worked. That then seems to help the running game which looked good in the first half. Again, why do they go away from things that are working. And agree on Henson and the offensive line. He just may need a bit more time to develop a core group on his technique.

      2. I think that they will get a really good DC. LR made a mistake in not dumping Grench after 2022. He knows it. As a result, he has had the worst year of his life. He’s had fans and bloggers calling him an idiot and moron. He’s had some well known college football pundants say that he is a fraud as a coach. Don’t think that those comments don’t get to him emotionally. He doesn’t handle those comments well. This is the guy that said that his first loss of his head coaching career(the 5th game of 2017) was a situation that felt like the end of the world. Just one loss. He never wants to have another season like this. He will do anything to insure that he never has another season like this. I think that he will go out of his way to make sure that he gets the right man for the job. He doesn’t want another Grench.

  5. It’s not that complicated. It’s simply the X’s and O’s. The defensive secondary doesn’t have the athleticism to play man to man coverage. It doesn’t matter what scheme they use, at some point you’re going to have to cover somebody one on one. They can play a Cover 1 or a Cover 2 or a Tampa 2 or whatever, but regardless of the zone scheme someone is going to be on an island. I think the coaches have done a decent job considering the size / foot speed / tackling instinct / ball awareness of the players they have to work with. I know that sounds like a knock on the kids playing their hearts out and I don’t mean it like that. It’s just what I see. I’m also concerned that USC as a school choice doesn’t appeal at all to the kids who have the mindset to play aggressive collision defense. USC is in an unappealing crime and homeless saturated environment. I know. I live here a few blocks away. Most of the kids are trying to get out of an environment like this and when they see Oregon in the countryside or Washington on the Puget Sound or just about anywhere else it’s a no brainer to ditch the decaying gang infested urban dumpster that Los Angeles has become. Just this week we had a USC student allegedly raped by a Rideshare driver. You don’t think that kind of thing factors in to what the parents want for their football playing kids?? The neighborhood conditions are probably one of the most important factors for the parents. Do Notre Dame, Ohio State, Alabama, Wisconsin etc. have to hide the urban realities from their recruits??

Watch this year’s Kansas team (CR Smith my fellow KC/Overland Park Trojan fan chime in) – the Kansas coach is a Man and his team plays their tails off for him – he gets every ounce out of the talent and puts them in positions to succeed. 2. Bryan – I call BS on your theory that the environment at SC is what keeps kids from going there.

This is ALL about coaching. The coaches are responsible for recruiting the right players, developing them and putting them in a scheme that utilizes their abilities. These defensive coaches made a myriad of bad choices and really cant coach at all, bottom line.

An example of a guy with limited physical skills is Bryson Shaw. It is the coaches who keep playing the guy, despite his lack of abilities. Or they have a scheme that makes him do things he cant. They have other players that could play better. Raesjon Davis has plenty of physical speed and strength, but they wont play him!

If you really watch the defense, you see coverage busts all over the place and it looks like players just have no idea where they are supposed to be. This is inept coaching over and over.

    1. Riley has many issues, but he really only needs to do one thing – fire Grinch and hire the best possible DC and then let that DC hire the best defensive coaching staff.

Riley can find a way to make the offense elite again, he just needs the o-line to be effective and needs to figure out the QB position next year. Maybe a transfer who will be there 1-2 years.

And have just one receiver coach and hire a special teams coach.

The program is clearly cratering at light speed and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Why in the fuck would you want to meet up with Cabby with 1000s of people in the area, pussy boy? So you could cry wolf, got it

  12. What CLR needs to realize is that these players only get one shot at playing football at a school like USC, where competing for a NC should be a given year in and year out. Like I’ve posted before, twenty-seven years ago as a Senior in high school the same thing happened to our football team, which should have competed for back to back CIF titles, but we had an absolute jackass of an OC that was a close family friend to our Head Coach. As players we had no respect for this clown because he was an arrogant, incompetent fool, who never coordinated the offense to our strengths. As our senior year we begged and pleaded with our HC to make a change but he wouldn’t do it. The end result being that we finished with a mediocre 7-3-1 record. The HC and the OC kept right n coaching, but for us players it was over, and we are all still bitter about it to this day. Multiply this by ten and that’s what the USC players are feeling this morning, with a more than likely bigger embarrassment coming at Oregon next Saturday. These players deserve a helluva lot better from the “adults in the room”.

  13. We are probably a missed Cal Two Point Conversion from a) allowing more than 50 points in at least three straight games and b) ending the season with a 6-game losing streak.
Chew on that for a while and then ask yourself: Considering we have a Heisman winner and legit #1 Draft Pick at QB, it this the lowest the program has EVER been?

    1. While I agree that the results we are seeing are horrendous, the fixes are really pretty simple.

Fire that idiot Alex Grinch, hire the best possible DC and give him full reign to fire all the defensive coaches and hire effective coaches on the d side of the line.

Riley is a good OC, Simmons is a good receiver coach, Kiel is a great running back coach. Riley needs to determine if Henson is a good o-line coach (TBD).

USC is a top scoring team, so this is 100% a defensive problem and the solution is simple. The new AD just needs to demand that Riley go full-bore in changes. Also, get rid of KK before he infects Riley’s mind with air raid stupidity. KK is a well-known LOSER.

      1. Yes, getting rid of Grinch is simple, same for the OL, DL, DB & LB coach BUT, the players they recruited for Grinch’s speed defense will remain, it will take at least two years to get rid of them and recruit players who can actually take on a block and not get run over, cover WR’s et, it’s not going to be an overnight fix.

Coach 162 is NEVER going to run the ball when the game calls for it, he’s going to pass, pass, pass, he needs to go and SC has enough rich alums to do it, the fish rots from the head and Coach 162 isn’t very good.

  14. It was mentioned how ‘Celeb’s 2 main mistakes of fumbling and giving Wash 7-points and then being sacked out of field goal range costing a possible tying ‘3″ the game would probably have been won by SC

I don’t know, that sounds a lot like ‘taking back’ a chess move and then the rest of the game plays out differently, unpredictably

  15. That was pretty amazing how ‘Celeb’ had SC on his shoulders all the way countering Washington’s comprehensive offensive attack of run&gun with 6 touchdowns of his own until the losing end when he had nothing left in him but some sobs

    1. That’s what, one year’s Big Ten payout for jumping leagues?

“Initial reports indicate the Big Ten’s new deal that starts in 2024 could be worth a whopping $1 billion a year. That was before UCLA and USC signed on and brought the second-largest media market in the country.

Splitting $1 billion of annual TV revenue among 16 Big Ten schools yields an average of $62.5 million per school..”

  17. Part of Grinch’s problem is his name, it is associated with negativity as in “The Grinch who stole Christmas,” and it is a harsh sounding word that is similar in effect to one-word curses and lately has been used in that context.
But Wiley and Grinch are best pals and they probably have few of those, so it would be hurtful to say ‘goodbye’ and perhaps that is why it hasn’t been done yet

It is like putting down a dog or horse that is in misery. Just pull the trigger.

    1. There was no way to keep him. His defensive scheme for this game was a joke. He just copied what other teams have done to slow down Washington, without really considering whether his team could even execute that defensive scheme. And he never adjusted to stop the rush. I wonder if Greg Burns is the guy who steps in for the next games?

At least they can start to tell players that there is going to be a new DC and spin a positive story for next year. I would be giving some younger players a bit of playing time even if they make freshman mistakes like Duce, at least it allows them to evaluate talent for the next year.

    2. Who said that Riley fired Grinch?

Did Riley say that he fired Alex Grinch or did USC put out a statement that Grinch had been fire?

I doubt Riley fired Grinch, it was Jenn Cohen who fired him…’Ol Mule Shoe doesn’t have the balls to have done it.

And by the way, maybe this is the beginning of changing the narrative of SC’s defense having become a laughing stock with opposiing sports fans which began with the Tulane “circus” and carried through thru this Season prompting some Webfoots’ wag to brag, “Oregon just might put ‘100’ on that SC defense”

  24. Oregon will likely put up 50 plus points after Grinch’s firing and easily defeat USC. But what if Nua starts a different d line and stops the late shifting and it works. And what if Odom starts a different linebacker group and plays Raesjon Davis with less blitzes and schemes and it works. What if USC holds Oregon to under 30 points and USC wins by two touchdowns and then does the same to UCLA. Forever on the fanbase will be thinking “if Reilly had only acted after the Colorado second half debacle we could have been National champions.”
