USC-Washington Report Card

QUARTERBACK

Caleb Williams wasn’t perfect but he did an awful lot of things that other quarterbacks are incapable of doing. If he played on a better team, having 28 TD passes and 4 interceptions would look pretty good.

Grade: B+

RUNNING BACKS

Austin Jones seems to always play much better when he starts. Then again, Darwin Barlow looked great in his limited role so maybe it was the defense. I’ll get to Raleek Brown later today when I have more space.

Grade: A-

WIDE RECEIVER

I don’t get this group or maybe Lincoln Riley’s use of it. Other than Tahj Washington, who really does anything? Zacariah Branch is supposed to be one of the most exciting players around and he had three receptions for 16 yards.

Grade: C+

OFFENSIVE LINE

They had the luxury of playing against a pretty bad defense and still Caleb Williams was running for his life.

Grade: D+

DEFENSIVE LINE

For all the hype and transfers, Washington rushed for more than 300 yards. Cal rushed for more than 200 yards. It happens every week. They are culpable like the rest of the defense.

Grade: F

LINEBACKERS

I know the entire defense has issues on being where it needs to be. But these guys get caught out too on running plays. Tackett Curtis had only 1 tackle but also played less because Eric Gentry is getting more time.

Grade: F

DEFENSIVE BACKS

The whole unit struggled but the TV broadcast pointed out how Domani Jackson got caught out of position several times. The position coach needs to be upgraded.

Grade: F

SPECIAL TEAMS

They blocked a punt, which was good. Then there was an offsides on a kickoff. And the botched kick return that caused a drive to start on the 5-yard line. USC still needs a special teams coach.

Grade: C

COACHING

Lincoln Riley’s playcalling on the final drive was mystifying. Running the ball and throwing short passes down 10 points. He fires Alex Grinch 10 games into the season when everyone knew there were major problems last season. He’s out of touch.

Grade: F

  1. The O-line gets an F. The horrendous failure to pass block more than offsets their ok run blocking.

    I believe that the 4 or 5 week string of “F” grades for the coaches now ties the all-time record that Scottie gave to Helton back in the day.

      You think this season was bad, wait until next season. Fire the whole damn bunch and start over.

      Eat the remainder of Riley’s contract and get rid of him.

      Riley is a passive pussy, he has no balls, too sensitive, too bitch like emotional, couldn’t even bring himself to fire his friend knowing that his friend was responsible for fucking the team over. Do you really want a guy like that in charge of your program?

      And no it wasn’t Lincoln Riley who fired Alex Grinch, it was Jen Cohen.

    3. Far be it from me to disagree with the great Scott Wolf but in my book, Caleb Williams gets an F!! The way he jumped into his mom’s arms and sobbed uncontrollably like a little biatch tells you what kind of dude he is. It’s not like he shed some tears because of the lost season he straight up was blubbering like a little girl who didn’t get her way. What the hell has USC become? First, it was Bear Alexander crying like he got beat with some switches and now your supposed leader in Caleb Williams being a little sissy. I long for the days of Clay Helton and Jaxson Dart!

        that internet and cell phone service would be out for 24 to 36 hours. The next morning after the fire started, MG(imposter) was making posts on this blog. How was it possible if he was truly on the island?

        Thanks so much, guys! Got evacuated by Maui Police last night [I wanted to stay but they weren’t having it]. Spent the night in the car at Target parking lot with my wife. Woke up an hour ago, took a piss in the lot and drove us home. Fires have reduced …but… the winds are wild… so who knows what’s next….

This blog has always been the Wild West, but when Michael Guarino first appeared, he brought along respectfulness, positivity, and a sense of humor that gave some stability to this thing, made it fun to check out, and by his participation, seemed to raise the level of civility of the posts. He was always respectful of others, he could disagree with you but always in a civil and usually funny way, even the occasional flamethrower would get deflected with respect. Big loss to this board. #IMissHisHashtagsToo

      5. I don’t know the person who posted as Michael Guarino. Frankly, I don’t care. I come here for entertainment and MG entertained us like no other. I do know that MG was not Scott or any other poster. He had a unique skill set. He could quote from classic pieces of literature, or the Bible, or philosophy scholars or the movies. He knew about history and politics on a local and national level. He had a knowledge of everything USC – the teachers, dining halls, burger joints, concerts he attended, past football players, and historic games. He would frequently list his favorite local cheap eateries. And, he was also a real lawyer. He knew procedure and evidence which separates him from 99.9% of the public. He knew things that only an LA city attorney would likely know like handling a case against a politician’s daughter. And he knew at least some of the details of Mike Guarino – where he grew up, what his father did for a living, his affection for boxing, how he attended high school at Saint Monica’s, how he went to his high school prom with Theresa at the Riviera Country Club and running for student body President. Does Scott or anyone else on this blog know these things? Does he have the same writing style as Scott or anyone else. Whoever this person was who posted as MG – he was a lawyer who knew Michael Guarino extremely well.

        Too bad Gabby had to harass MG to point where he no longer felt comfortable on the blog. I miss him.

      6. So you claim the imposter brought entertainment value to the blog. I agree until I had some doubts that he was the real MG.

        What tipped me off was a question I asked MG a few years back. I asked him if he had any interaction with Marcia Clark during the OJ trial. His response was, “At the time I was not working in the same office”. Here’s the problem, the real MG resigned from the DA office in early 1993 to run for the elected position of LA City DA. He lost in a landslide.

        In 1994, he moved from Oakland to Maui. He bought a new house in Maui and has Susan Sola listed as a joint owner on the deed. He claimed to be married to Susan which is another lie according to public records.

        Do you think the real MG finds it “entertaining” for someone to use his name, image, and likeness to enrich an imposter’s reputation and credibility?……. I don’t think so!

        The tipping point came when he mocked me and lied about being impacted by the situation in Maui. Which was a slap in the face to the real people who endured the tragedy. I had to expose him as a fraud.

  8. It really is the Peter Principle at work here. Riley just got promoted above his ability. He is missing the skills of a head coach – leadership, communication skills, organization skills, motivational skills.

    But does Riley want to change?

    If he hires a really good DC and then allows him to take charge on defense, the team might be really good, but to become truly great, Riley needs to be willing to go deep into his own personality and change. He needs to let go of the pretense and admit where he is deficient and work to change it.

    Not many people can do that.

    The game was won in the trenches when SC could not sack Penix. The Wash. line gave up only one sack. If he had been hit or sacked a few more times, then maybe SC might have had a chance. Give Wash oline an A. The rushing yardage was due to Grinch and his might defense but passing and blocking was on Wash.

      players. The game was lost because of all the chunk plays the defense gave up through the ground…..A guy rushed for 260 yards. The linebackers were not stepping and out of position all night….you can’t play 3-technique with 220-pound linebackers.

The game was lost on the ground through too many chunk plays…..so how in the fuck would rushing 5 fix this…They gained over 300 yards on the ground. Basic football 101, STOP THE RUN……even a know-it-all like you should know this!!!
