USC Notes: An NFL Rumor And Signing Day!

Did Lincoln Riley meet with the Chicago Bears when he was out for a couple days last month?

That’s a rumor traveling through the NFL grapevine.

  • USC men’s and women’s basketball signed the No. 1-ranked players in the state of Idaho today. The men signed shooting guard Liam Campbell while the women signed guard Avery Howell, who is ranked 23rd overall nationally.
  • USC track had a big day as it signed sprinter Mia Brahe-Pedersen of Lake Oswego, Ore., the No. 1-ranked track prospect in the nation. The Trojans also signed sprinter Maira Scott, the No. 10 recruit in the Class of 2024.
  • The USC bookstore has a new supply of Victory Bell tree ornaments!

    1. Two good candidates for that DC job are the DC at Texas and the DC at UCLA. The guy at Texas is a protege of Chris Petersen and has had a resume of success and the guy at UCLA has an extensive NFL background and has UCLA #13 in the nation in defense. But that is with much less talent. USC’s 2023 roster has 21 four stars and 2 two stars on their defense. UCLA has 9 four stars and no 5 stars on their defense. There is no comparison talent-wise. Plus #13 in the nation is great considering that UCLA is in the best offensive conference in the nation. The guy is a good recruiter and he knows this area.

      1. Oregon State defensive coordinator Trent Bray is most likely the best Lincoln Riley is going to be able to do to replace that fucking loser idiot Alex Grinch

  1. How sorry I would be to see Riley go would depend on whether he pulls a Larry Smith and sneers that mascots and tradition don’t win football games.

Of course, if you asked Carol Folt, she’d probably say the same. Her relationship with USC is strictly transactional.

  2. Scooter,

If he goes to Chicago, his offense will not work there either. the cold and his passive style of football would not fit in with the the Bears and USC needs, and that is tough physical football. I hope he goes though. Get a coach that will play tough and physical football at SC.

  3. Scooter,

You never mentioned how SC won in the season opener for women and men’s basketball. They both won with a resounding wins over the #6 ohio st and kansas st teams. They might just get into the elite 8. Long way to go though. Both #1 ranked freshman players played very well in both wins

  4. It wouldn’t surprise me the least if Lincoln Riley met with the Bears, or entertained any other NFL offer. The Trojans are far from being prepared for the Big Ten, and next seasons grueling schedule. Riley is soft, and could never handle the scrutiny that will come his way with another subpar season next year.

    1. Here here. Y’all know how I stand. And he doesn’t even need to be bought out of a contract. That would be a very smart move. And perhaps spend a little change on bringing in Gary Patterson as a position coach to back up the physicality cause both those dudes are hosses when it comes to physical defenses. And I gaurntee the would KNOW how to tackle!

    2. Leonard is a Wisconsin/mid-west guy. He has no interest in a Southern California lifestyle and has repeatedly said the same. Heard Phil Parker’s name mentioned as a candidate. He has a good resume. Former defensive backs coach and now defensive coordinator for Iowa.

  5. Seems as if everybody forgets that Wiley’s teams do know how to score
Now all he has to do is slow down the other team’s scoring

    1. In case people got blocked:

Baylor’s Dave Aranda is a new name on the hot seat list. It’s looking more and more like the Bears’ 12-2 campaign two years ago was a flash in the pan. Aranda is 22-20 (14-16 Big 12) since 2020. At the start of the season, Aranda ranked in Tier 5 of The Athletic’s coaching tiers with the chance to “move up tiers quickly.” He’s now trending in the wrong direction.

      1. LSU won a national championship because of Joe Burrows and the LSU offense. They outscored their opponents but for some reason Aranda got credit for being a great defensive coordinator. I don’t think it is deserved. Hope USC doesn’t offer him because he will probably take it.

      2. Before that, three years at Wisconsin over which they beat teams by an average of 32 to 17.

Man, if we could hold teams to under 20 with our offense!

Oh well, none of it means squat. They’ll hire someone we all bitch about anyway. 😛

  6. Reilly is not going to the NFL. Five reasons.

    1. He has an 80 million college contract. The NFL will not match that contract.
    2. He is unproven as a complete college coach – offense, defense, and special teams.
    3. College coaches generally fail in the NFL and NFL owners know it.
    4. The Air Raid offense doesn’t win Championships and the KK experiment failed.
    5. The guy has publicly stated that he wants to spend more time with his kids.

  7. The Bears and their fans take pride in tough defenses. Lots of great defensive players and defensive squads.

No way they hire a coach who, so far, has been dismissive of assembling a strong defensive team.

  8. Seriously. The NFL is not gonna hire one-way Riley. We are stuck with him until every million on his contract is paid out, or it gets below Helton days.
