An Easy Choice For Lincoln Riley

Zach Arnett was fired by Mississippi State and would be an extremely easy choice for Lincoln Riley to hire as defensive coordinator.

Arnett spent the previous two years as Mike Leach’s defensive coordinator, so there’s that. Arnett is actually a Rocky Long disciple and was an assistant at San Diego State from 2011-2019.

USC’s Dave Emerick, who is senior associate athletic cirector for football/general manager, spent two years at Mississippi State with Arnett. If he liked Arnett, that would be influential.

  • Now some caveats: Arnett immediately got rid of the Air Raid at Mississippi State when he replaced Leach and some believe it cost him his job. Does Arnett want to coach defense again with the challenges of Riley’s offense? For the money and prestige of USC, the answer is likely yes.

More importantly, should Riley cast a wider net than just making the first hire that crosses his path?

There’s also the matter of whether Arnett is going to get the San Diego State job. He was highly regarded there.

      2. Kiffin was forced to go Bubble Screen Crazy due to Scholarship limitations that did not allow building up the Offensive Line. Had to try to get the ball into the hands of Woods, Lee & Agholor as much and as quickly as possible. Not seeing that now at Mississippi. Ole Miss has 402 rushing attempts and only 291 pass attempts so far. At USC in 2012, 389 rushing attempts and 458 Pass Attempts.

    1. In terms of screwing with commerce in downtown LA, that location could not have been planned any better.

      A friend compared it to the bridge in Montebello that burned 12 years ago. (Time has flown! Doesn’t seem that long ago.) That took five months to repair completely. But this is much worse.

        That is one of the busiest interchanges in the world. You have the 5, 10, 60, 101 fwy linked up. Traffic is affected as well due to the 710 fwy not being connected to the 210 fwy so more traffic will be involved on Freemont and Atlantic. This is screwed.

  7. No thanks on Arnett. We don’t need anyone who worked for Mike Leach the guy was not a winner. Offer Ed Orgeron- Assistant Head Coach and Defense Coordinator. He would take the job and bring physical football back to USC on defense, and he can recruit.

    2. Orgeron is too much of a risk. He’s never been a DC. He’s a great position coach. So was Norm Chow but NC was not a great HC. Orgeron is proof positive that if you have a great OC and DC and good position coaches and great athletes, there’s a lot of people who can win a NC as a HC.
      He had Dave Aranda as DC. You don’t get any better than that(yet DA hasn’t so far turned out to be a great HC). He had Joe Brady as OC. You don’t get much better than that. Yet, to this day, he’s never been a HC.
      Being a DC is different from being a position coach. When you are a position coach, the key word is techniq
      LR is a great OC. All you need is a great DC and some outstanding position coaches. SC will always have the athletes. SC recruits itself. It’s usually the assistants who do all the coaching. It was certainly that way with Clay Helton. It’s a little different with LR because he is a great QB coach.
      Go out and get a great DC and SC will be great.
