USC Morning Buzz: The Latest Defensive Meltdown

I asked a Pac-12 coach to watch game films of the USC defense against Oregon and it wasn’t pretty.

“Lincoln Riley set (his assistant coaches) up to fail by making them defensive coordinators against Oregon,” he said. “Of all the teams to face in your first game. They run a tempo offense so it’s an adjustment. Those guys never had a chance.”

Now about the secondary.

“They have no technique, no fundamentals, the players are confused,” he said. “They took bad angles on plays. I don’t know what Donte Williams is coaching them to do.

“It was just terrible watching it. You can blame some of it on the players but they are not getting coached. There are guys playing that don’t know what they are doing. They haven’t learned anything.

“I don’t see anyone taking that (defensive coordinator) job without bringing in a whole new staff. Lincoln might be able to save one of his guys. But it’s not a rebuild. It’s starting at Ground Zero. You have change everything. The whole defense. The techniques. The fundamentals. The culture. It’s not going to be easy.”

    This post is reminiscent of the story of the Roman Emperor Tiberius having sarcastically expressed his sorrow to an embassy from Asia Minor on the passing of their hero Hector when they belatedly extended their sympathies on the passing of his son Drusus.

    Just as with the Chargers the only thing I’m interested in learning is if the day has finally arrived that we will be rid of the Spanos as owners, the only thing about USC football that is worth conveying is when a true housecleaning is under way.

        That’s why I laughed 2-3 weeks ago at the ticket office for not caring if long time season ticket holders let our tickets go the past year or two, because we didn’t care for all of the changes. Previously, we had stuck through thick & thin because we enjoyed knowing our seatmates, watching their families grow and getting old with each other.

    2. I dont think it is negative, it is just the truth. Coaching football is about creating automatic reactions so players can play fast. Did you see on those two long first quarter passes how the secondary got turned around? You dont turn to the right and do a full circle back to the left to a guy breaking to the left. That is a cardinal sin. And the angle of attack of the safety (Max Williams) on the play where CRW got burned was ridiculous. Instead of running forward to the point of reception, Max gets on his heels, doesnt run to the ball and then eventually turns around and runs backwards with the receiver. It is a study in horrible angles. CRW was on one side of the receiver, so the only angle to take is to the receiver, slightly to the side away from CRW. That forces the receiver back toward CRW, between the two defenders. This is pretty basic stuff. Max has been in this program for how long? And he is virtually unplayable. Zero chance he will end up in the NFL.

      Riley was at practices, how does he not see and comment on this stuff? or is he so buried in offensive schemes and QB play that he is not even looking at what is happening on the field in practices?

      Riley should hire both a DC and an OC (yes hire a real OC that is not Kliff Kingsbury) and have Riley focus on setting a big picture vision for the team. Riley should also be focused on his own personal development, challenging himself to become the head coach that he currently is not.

If you just took a receiver who is a natural athlete and asked him to play cornerback for the first time you could not do any worse than guys who were 4 or 5 stars coming out of high school and have been in the program for three years. What does that say about Grinch and Donte Williams. Their inability to teach/coach these players who have raw talent is an absolute disservice to the players primarily but also the team, university, and fanbase. Donte should not wait to be fired. He should apologize and resign.

  4. Bottom line is that Lincoln Riley is the problem and will always be the problem. He’s a finesse coach, won’t pound the rock, doesn’t know shit about defense or physical football, and until he’s gone SC will be mediocre.

    Texas A&M showed USC what they should do, doubt they do it but it can be done and SC has the rich alums to do it, just hiring a top DC isn’t going to fix the whole problem and I really wonder if a top DC even wants to work under Riley or take on the huge task to fix this defensive mess.

    2. Actually, the USC defense was significantly BETTER in this game than under Grinch. The scheme was improved. The defense got some stops in the second half against a very effective offense. The secondary is still a ridiculous mess and they didnt get enough pressure on the QB, but overall, they did a better job of stopping the run. They didnt have Gentry, so this was a significantly better defensive job. If they could teach the secondary to stop the big plays, they would have been in this game. But re-training the secondary in their basic skills is not something that gets solved in one week.

      The offensive line is really what lost this game for USC. Caleb just couldnt continue to pull rabbits from his hat all night long with constant pressure. With decent offensive line play, they score 42 and walk away with a win.

      The team is a complete mess, and yet, the talent of the players is so high that they could almost beat Oregon even with this horrible coaching staff. Think what a great coaching staff could do?

      I am starting to sour on the receivers coaches too. Duce and Jakobi and Branch and Kyron Ware Hudson could be a great core to a receiving core next year, but there is some kind of problem with the routes they are running and the development of players. I wonder if it is simply that they are practicing against a defense that never challenges them at the point of reception?

    1. To me, that isnt what lost this game, at all. If they had made the 2 point conversion, we would all be saying it was a smart move. I agree it was the wrong call, but this is a nearly 50-50 decision. They would have needed to get a 2 point conversion on the next TD anyway.

      This is not what fans or Riley should focus on in this game.

      Both Washington and Oregon were completely beatable with Caleb. The problem is that Riley doesnt have Caleb next year. I am concerned that Malachi Nelson is not getting better and Moss has a limited upside.

    1. Yes, but, I think the real big question is if the d-line and linebackers can stop the rushing attack and force UCLA to beat us in a passing duel.

      The secondary needs some immediate triage. Maybe they just need to play Christian Pierce and take Max Williams off the field permanently, along with Bryson Shaw. Too bad Zion was injured.

      I think Raesjon was marginally better than Tackett, but you can tell that he needs more gametime and development to be a difference maker. He is generally in the right vicinity, now he needs to be coached to make the play, with some violence. If they had been playing him all year long, he might be real good by now.
