USC Morning Buzz: Losing Exposes Hypocrisy

You know what losing exposes: Hypocrisy.

It’s amazing the about-face some USC talking heads can do once a bit of losing takes place.

All of a sudden, they say last year’s success was ahead of schedule; it will “take some time” to rebuild the program and they argue the transfer portal has its limitations.

One huge problem here: It’s not that these arguments are necessarily invalid, it’s that they DID NOT MAKE THEM AT THE TIME.

They all hailed Lincoln Riley throughout last season, without mentioning the lack of Washington or Oregon on the schedule (among other issues). They didn’t advise patience while basking in the reflected glow of the 11 victories. They never pumped the brakes while hailing Riley’s transfer portal signings as a master stroke of genius.

These were the same people who waved off my criticism over Riley’s high school recruiting classes as lackluster by USC standards.

Oh, and this preseason, they were as bullish as anyone that USC would be a serious College Football Playoff contender.

Today? Well, in their view the fans just don’t understand reality and need to be patient. Unbelievable. They can’t just say Riley botched things up. Never criticize the king.

It’s always about covering up after overhyping.

        But you ignore that and being the child you are copy & paste posts from more than a year ago directed at me in which you:

        1) Ignore that the first also ragged on you, but conveniently leave that out.
        2) Ignore that the next two were from people who have since posted several times about politics!!
        3) Include that ridiculous post about “double duty”, which ignores the fact that Joe is not directing anything. He’s a puppet and has admitted it several times, when saying he’d get into trouble for taking questions.

        I have no doubt that being the complete fool you are, you’ll use that one again. You have no problem demonstrating yourself to be the Village Idiot.

      11. Using gotroy22 logic, I have deduced that MG never left and that So Cal & MG are one and the same person.
        Both claim not to be a fan of Trump but can’t let the slightest insult directed at the their orange idol go by without defending and deflecting. They have to be the same person!
        Whether or not the comments come from Hawaii or if he actually played the bassoon in the marching band are still under review.
        Unlike gotroy, I will not be including this “discovery” in every one of the 50 or so comments I make every single day.

        MG used to tell the Village Idiot how stupid she is in the nicest way possible, so that she wouldn’t cry and go off on him. Usually, the insult flew right over her head.

        I have no problem making the Village Idiot cry. MG (and most of the guys here) are incredibly big hearted. I aspire to be as forgiving as they are, but have not yet gotten there.

        Plow Horse has tried on several occasion to give her second, third & fourth chances after she insulted his family. He will pose questions in a civil manner hoping to get an intelligent response, which, of course, she cannot accommodate.

        But nice try, Frank Young/TebowObama/Gabriela.

  4. Obtaining players through the Transfer-Portal the past couple of years was uncharted territory and no one knew what kind of quality player could be acquired in this manner. Now everybody knows to stick with the high scchool kids if you have enough NIL money to saatisfy them

  5. The Transfers Dan Lanning brought in have done great. It’s about development, an eye for talent and cash. Kelly is a great developer but refuses to recruit. So far Riley is blind to development, Ignorant about line and defensive talent and all about his own check book.

  6. USC recruiting finished number 7 for 2023, the average star ranking was about the same as Georgia, LSU, TX. Can’t blame what is happening now on recruiting.

    2. Look at this year, not exactly full of players of need at OL, DL or LB and the top kids in the state fled, most didn’t even have SC in their final choices.

    3. Don’t confuse us with facts 67. Agree that we had an excellent class last year. Branch, Robinson, Paige, Noa, Hughes, and Shelby are all very good players with Branch being exceptional. And Nelson, Lane, the running backs, and even Tackett Curtis and Christian Pierce will likely develop into good players. We also have a five star tight end coming back from his Mormon mission. The problem was the O line transfers were a dumpster fire and nobody was able to coach or develop the defensive players. Maybe a big time defensive coordinator will attract some transfer talent. Blackmon and Roland Wallace helped the team at cornerback and we are going to need immediate help at that position.

  7. On Sunday, the day after SC destroys the wussies from ugly, he needs to evaluate his coaching staff. By Monday he needs to clean house. Get rid of the db coach Williams for sure. He has to guess that Caleb will not return so he needs to rebuild his offense. What does he want to run, power run, RPO, West Coast, wishbone, veer, single wing, or pass happy offense. he has to prepare to play in the cold. He has to hire a DC that is not a yes man but is strong personable type that will not take crap from anyone. We will see

  8. I see LR dragging his feet on a DC hire. Furthermore I see him somehow negotiating with potential DC’s that they must retain some or all the existing D assistants. What high level DC would agree to that? Folks we got Texas tech, not Georgia. With LRs massive contract, this facade will continue for years. Only Jen can actually get us outta this mess by firing all the assistants and see what LRs reaction is. He might walk, contract and all. No downside.

    1. Rumor is that Jen was talking to the DC from Texas. If true, that is a good sign. It means they are prepared to spend the money to get someone who is a big time coach and recruiter and that person will demand an entirely new defensive staff and will get it. He may also be able to bring a few transfers with him and we need immediate help.

  10. It’s clear the program has not been able to attract the top ol or dl players in the portal or out of high school in the Riley era. Heck, even Helton had 2 ol drafted in the first round. If that trend doesn’t change we’ll be a middle of the conference team. Quick stat: in 4 consecutive seasons (1980-1983), we had 3 players drafted in first round.

  12. Most people here skip reading the current beat writer for Wolf’s old stomping grounds, but current guy has a lot in common with Scott. Luca Evans has been banned by the coach and is calling the coach out for using the same tired line about the defense.
    “It’ll get better soon” has been a Riley line since 2018. And it hasn’t. It seems USC hired a cross between Lane Kiffin and Clay Helton. If you see Lincoln’s lips moving you know there’s a hidden truth. (Thats Heltonesque for he’s lying)
