USC-UCLA: Lincoln Riley Has Lost It

A new low for Lincoln Riley today.

He showed up for this game as if it were Washington State. He didn’t look like he cared. His team went through the motions. The Coliseum was eerily quiet because the fans waited for something to happen that never did.

I’ve seen plenty of unprepared USC football teams but this was one of the worst. Riley called a horrible game with conservative passes and a complete lack of a running game.

He also tolerated Caleb Williams throwing sidearm passes all day, which didn’t work.

USC rushed for 3 yards. That’s right, 3 yards!

Can we do something about the lack of physicality? Can we replace the strength coaches? It’s not just Alex Grinch. What was the offensive line doing? It couldn’t run block or protect Williams.

The defense had the benefit of facing an ordinary UCLA offense. But they still couldn’t cover anyone and let the Bruins rush for 199 yards.

But let’s get back to Riley. He had no answers today but he didn’t seem to try to offer any.

He needs to agree to a major overhaul of the program or get out. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind if he left now. I’m tired of his aloof, holier-than-thou, I know-more-than-you routine.

Riley showed up for the Crosstown Rivalry like it was the Sun Bowl. And to him, it probably was. Please exit, stage right!

  1. What a cluster f*ck.

Pains me to say this, but the village idiot at Georgia Southern might have done more today than Riley with the same team.

The O-line is incompetent. The D is incompetent. This will take some time to fix, and I doubt Riley is the guy to do it.

      1. Jen Cohen will have to hold Lincoln Riley’s hand when hiring a new defensive coordinator, otherwise the team will end up with another Alex Grinch

      2. I’m so happy you guys at USC coach poached Stinking Lincoln Riley from OU, cuz he is a fraud . The only reason he was successful at OU was due to Bob Stoops who left him with Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray. Then he got lucky and got Hurts from the Portal. His last year at OU was a disgrace. So thanks Trojans alumni but it cost you way too much money. HaHa

      3. Jen Cohen needs to call LRs bluff. Force him to make the proper changes to help the team get better or resign if you can’t handle orders. That simple.

    1. Like almost everyone I bought the coolaid and didn’t vet his body of work. He can’t beat a quality opponent. Maybe it’s too early to tell but I don’t think you’ll ever get to the college football playoffs. He is a fraud. The big question now is who is responsible for hiring him.

  2. What strikes me about this program is that USC has gotten worse at the end of both seasons, last year and this year.

What other team has gotten much worse over the course of the season? Colorado. Maybe both of them have crappy coaching.

Good coaching makes teams better over the season and USC devolves.

Caleb Williams not only was a great player, but he attracted other players to the team. Now how can Riley get players to buy into his team?

  3. The refs fuct us. We should’ve won this game but for bad officiating.

I’m glad Lincoln will be leading us into the B1G, if we had B1G refs this year we’d be in the playoffs.

    1. Are you related to Riley? Why makes excuses for a coach who was supposed to get us a national championship but instead continued to trivialize the program?

  4. Riley has proven to be an incompetent head coach. Where is his national championship resume…oh that’s right he has none. This year’s team is on the same level as a Clay Helton team. He has been proven to be an imposter. USC would be wise to cut ties with him now. I would hate to imagine next year’s team in the Big 10 with no Caleb. Don’t make the same mistake as made with Grinch.

  5. Getting Clay results without the light at the end of the tunnel, which was it was only a matter of time before he got the axe. We’re a good 5 years away before a buyout is even in the realm of possibility. 5 years of getting destroyed in the Big. 4 win, maybe some 2 or 3 win years. And it’s not like when we were a Petey away from recovering from a Hackett era. The game has changed and you must be a winning brand to keep competing, and it’s only going to be more so in the years to come. This might be the most dire time in the history of the program.

    1. Why if A&M can show a national championship winner the door in Jimbo Fisher. USC can do the same with LR.. Stop it with the excuses.

    2. 2-3 wins a year yeah right. In the big 10 which is only top heavy with Michigan and Ohio st. Penn State has no offense and neither does Iowa.

  6. USC fails yet again at the end of the season-against their crosstown rival. The whole PAC12 has figured out Riley. I watched the first 10 minutes of the game-then shut it off. It’s not worth it anymore.

I DO have to say that the rankings during the season are SHIT. Ponder this: The Arizona Wildcat team that USC was supposed to dominate- but barely beat…Killed UTAH yesterday. So maybe Arizona was better than people thought?

Anyways…I don’t care what bowl USC goes to-it doesn’t make any difference. After enduring the years of subpar performance from a once dominant team-I can find better things to do with my time than wasting it on this dumpster fire of a program. It’s always going to be more of the same.

No, it didn’t!! You were playing sub par teams and in 2 or 3 them, you were only a couple of plays away from losing!! Everyone knew the second half of our schedule would tell us where truly stood, in the grand scheme of things!!!!

  9. On second thought there are positives–
Vintage ‘Celeb 60-yarder to Rice Junior
Got 20-points on one of the country’s best defenses
    Held sucla’s All-American defender “Spit-tooee” or something
to only 2-sacks and 8 tackles.

And Wiley, the toast of the town last year and now they just want to toast him, but he’s 40, prideful, has offensive talent and will probably figure-out this ‘coaching thing’ in a year or two

  12. Riley is the world’s highest paid offensive coordinator. He’s not a head coach. And he certainly has not embraced USC tradition–unlike Pete Carroll, who made it a priority to learn and embrace the rich history and tradition. But maybe that’s because there’s no one left in the athletic department who understands it either.

I feel bad to Caleb, who played most of the season like he had to win every game by himself–because that was the reality.

    1. I would even venture to say that Riley is not an effective offensive coordinator, but only a good QB coach. If he doesnt learn some new tricks, the results will stink.

I guess he can hire some coaches and try to turn things around. Maybe that will work, or maybe not.

  13. Hard lessons. USC struggles to learn lessons. Helton wasn’t ready to be head coach at a top tier power 5 school and neither was Riley at both OU and USC. There is something to be said for learning your craft at lower levels and building for the next step up. It’s not an absolute solution but it is a principle to have to hire good coaches. Are they really any good at what they do? Are they ready for the next step? USC admins failed twice with the same missed principles. Riley took over a strong program in OU and Had Stoops as mentor to guide him and he still screwed up. USC gave him the keys to a dumpster fire and gave him no oversight, mentorship, nor leadership. He isn’t ready for the stage he is on. So now USC has to come up with more money for new assistants and NIL money for players. Because they ain’t coming here without some paper to come in as a 4 or 5 star and leave a 2 star and no NFL.
