Does Lincoln Riley Understand The Crosstown Rivalry?

This was one of the flattest USC performances I’ve seen in the Crosstown Rivalry and I suspected Lincoln Riley probably doesn’t really understand the history.

So here’s an observation: Does Riley really care if USC only sent freshmen players to the rally on Thursday night?

Oh, and no coaches at the rally. Riley, of course, would never speak at the rally. He doesn’t interact with people. But couldn’t some other coach be bothered? Nope.

So who spoke? Band director Jake Vogel. Hurray!!!!

It’s a far cry from the rally picture I ran last week from 1980 with Hoby Brenner, James Hunter, Ronnie Lott, Keith Van Horne, Dennis Smith and Speedy Hart.

        my read of the core problem with USC football is leadership at the top. Carol Folt wants a winning football team, but wants no part of the culture that surrounds a successful program. she doesnt want old white men around. she doesnt want the conservative part of usc to have any part of the university. she wants to turn USC football into queer, liberal, touch football, where players (of either sex) dance around the field in tutus.

        so Folt and Bohnhead hired a coach who is aloof and doesnt want any part of actually building support for this USC team with the type of people who actually still love football. Folt has neutered the whole support system for USC football. i think at this point, Riley just wants to escape from USC with his reputation intact, but that will require him to actually have a 10-2 or 11-1 season, which wont be easy.

        Riley needs to be the head cheerleader for this team (not in a chick way, in an alpha-male way). Dan Lanning is showing that he is a great leader at Oregon and it is based on his personality.

        football is about testosterone, and if you dont like that, why are you even here?

    Seems like Wiles appreciated the inner-city rivalry last year when he was saved by Celeb and one Korey Foreman and it catapulted SC into the Pac-12 Championship game.
    2 crippling fumbles this year left SC out in the cold but I saw the effort was there even if nobody else saw it

    1. If LR hires that Leach disciple for D Coordinator- Arnett ( code for an LR buddy who wont mess with his kingdom), and does nothing with the O Line Coordinator, then we will be on this same track next ear and beyond. This will be very telling how our perception of LR is going forward.

  5. This year’s version of the defense is the worst I’ve ever seen in my 55 plus years of scrutinizing the Trojans. The offense was very very good. The offense was the third highest scoring offense in college football and they could have scored more. The defense however, had very few outstanding plays. I don’t like the idea of changing the head coach, but I do think they should have a more experienced defensive coordinator who can recruit better players. That’s a very achievable goal and there’s several names floating around.

  6. This is a legitimate criticism. Lincoln Riley should embrace USC traditions and incorporate them into recruiting and into the culture that he’s trying to establish. This type of thing makes USC unique in its own way and differentiates it from other schools.

    1. We averaged 66,070 per home game. (based on sales not attendance, of course)

      Next year, we won’t crack 60,000 and the ACTUAL attendance will look like 40,000, on average.
