USC Morning Buzz: Who Are Some Defensive Coordinator Names?

You need to wonder right now how motivated the USC coaching staff is, especially on defense, with changes looming.

It’s going to be a crazy December with the transfer portal and early signing day. So a new defensive coordinator will need to quickly fill out his staff.

There is going to be joyous reaction to almost any hire. But I really think it needs to be stresed that the strength program needs an upgrade. It’s two years later and USC doesn’t play or act like a physical football team. If this is not addressed, a defensive coordinator is already hamstrung right off the bat.

  • Who are the names I hear for USC defensive coordinator? In no particular order: Purdue coach Ryan Walters, Illinois defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, ex-Mississippi State coach Zach Arnett, Rams assistant head coach Jimmy Lake and Louisville defensive coordinator Ron English. Frankly, someone else could still emerge because I think Riley is sifting through lists of candidates.
  • Can anyone tell me what the “dream team” pairing of Lincoln Riley and Kliff Kingsbury did for Caleb Williams this season? Was Kingsbury responsible for all the sidearm throws?
  • Do not underestimate how much it will irritate opposing fans that Olivia Rodrigo roots for USC. Here’s a Cal fan weighing in. Yes, a Cal fan.

  2. It makes no difference who the strength coach is, because it’s all about the culture. Pass happy teams aren’t normally physical because they don’t need to be. Is a matter of fact, Bruce Arians said offensive lineman coming out of finesse college programs are usually soft, and have to be reprogrammed on fundamentals. The fact that Lincoln Riley’s offense doesn’t include an established running game will also hurt the defense, and contribute to a non physical team

    1. Jake says “Reilly’s offense hurts the defense.” Agree. How is USC suppose to become a run stopper on defense when they don’t play against it in practice. They only occasionally see the counter trey in practice. No other run schemes. What are they going to do against Michigan who ran the ball 30 times in the second half against Penn State. Reilly needs to address this problem by adjusting the offense to include a power run game and using it. No more shotgun snaps from the 1/2 yard line.

        Let me add some context, the word “organized” meant being a member of a football team. It’s obvious you don’t know how a college-level practice is run in general. And the perceived purpose of a scout team.

        I gave you credit for having an average football IQ. And you communicate your thoughts well. But the post-snap IQ is not there. This leads me to believe Pop Warner was your ceiling…..I could be wrong, just my opinion

    3. My concern with the USC program right now is that Riley builds teams around his superstar quarterback so he has never developed a comprehensive approach to football strategy. I will keep saying this, but he needs to create a program “without Superman” where he demands that the program can actually win with a mediocre QB and then add an exceptional QB to that program to make it great.

      If Riley doesnt fire KK or any of his offensive coaches, then I dont think he is serious and will fail again and again. The only coach I think is absolutely top notch is Kiel McDonald, running backs coach. That guy can identify talent, recruit talent and develop talent. He just needs a decent o-line for his backs.

  6. Darn good article by Thuc Nhi Nguyen in today’s LAT specifically the gain in assembling a line from high school commits rather than relying solely on transfer portal. The remarks by former OR Ducks and 8 yr NFL player offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz. Matt Leinhaet bluntly noted the cliff USC already is approaching per the Big 10 with the lack of size esp on the OL.
    Riley had best understand good coaches realize what needs to be done early in a season not in ths 10th game of a 12 game schedule. Riley has one year to fix this one.

    Riley will hire his personality or another grinch. SC is worse than a Helton team. It will not be any better next year. Oline will be in shambles and the defense will give up an average of 37 points per game. Put a fork into SC, they are done and cooked.
