  2. With all the talk of how great ‘Coach Carrot’s’ offenses were with Palmer, Leinart and Bush, it was Pete’s defenses that won titles, and that is the basic problem with SC today is where do you find those big uglies and who is going to pay them?

      1. ..and during that 43 days he only showed up on campus once….just long enough to take Clay Helton’s measure and see the writing on the wall….

      2. I don’t think the pitchforks would have come out if we had had a comparable year to last year. What would have been better, of course, is improvement. It wouldn’t have needed to be night & day. But noticeable improvement would have sufficed.

        Going backward is not acceptable.

    1. Choc-Chip’s seat is only mildly warm now, and who knew that Wiley’s 10-year contract was for the purpose of giving Wiles lifetime security

    3. Chip WAS on the hot seat. Everyone assumed USC would be able to do to SUCLA what Cal did. We were wrong.

      In the last regular season game, Cal was able to step up while USC was not. Sad.

  6. Pretty funny how the word “genius” was being thrown at Choc-Chip during his Oregon reign and Wiley when at OK, and today they are considered has-beens with modern football having passed them by

    And in an industry (football) that is so open to public scrutiny it is best to have an outgoing personality such as Pete ‘Carrot’ or Ed ‘Orangutan’ to be able to laugh off the inevitable criticism

    1. Pete had one other thing going for him: the vast majority of his players loved him…cuz he played it straight with them [until 2009 or thereabouts]. He also played it straight with the press [until 2009 or thereabouts]……

  7. Everybody is already in plenty of trouble, Michael, just being a human is sometimes hard, but yeah Pete Carrot was loved because he was that one-in-a-million personality that EVERYBODY loves

I’ve listened to dozens and dozens of Pete’s interviews and here’s the thing I always come away with: He’s mostly speaking from the heart –his first impulse is to tell the truth [naturally he fudges a bit when he’s under attack —but, usually, he tells it like it is]. I remember him saying at halftime of one of the Oregon games, “They’re totally socking it to us —I gotta figure out a way to slow them down or we’re done”….It was the most honest in-game assessment I ever heard from a coach.

      2. I hadn’t thought of that, John, but, yeah, you’re right. The guy had a way of saying things that made you connect with him. Do you remember the UCLA post game where the tv crew caught him saying to his team, “they kick an onside and WE score off it—how cool is that?!”

  8. The only thing I recall Pete saying was “What’s your deal?” to ‘Harblow
    which is about as close to profanity as Pete would get

    1. Though not a religious person, Pete didn’t like profanity. Lane Kiffin was a moody guy. Sometimes he would come out on the practice field and he was in a good mood and he would be kidding around with all of the players like he was one of them. Other times he would come out in a bad mood and he would start using profanity to address the players. Finally, Pete told Kiffin point blank “stop with the profanity”.
      Sark and Kiffin were like brothers. Pete loved Sark but he wasn’t too fond of Kiffin. He put up with him because he was such a brilliant offensive mind and also because he felt he owed it to Monte Kiffin since Monte was one of his mentors.

    I am waiting for the death sentence, which is the bowl game where USC will play and who they will lose to next. Sunday can’t come fast enough. Our best bet would be to placed on the death penality and shut down the program for a year or two. That would get rid of Riley and SC would not have to pay for his contract.

    1. This year has definitely damaged his reputation as a coach. But it’s too early to say the things that Paul Finebaum is saying…..that he is a fraud. Finebaum is just an SEC hack who hates USC.
      All Riley has to do is get someone to fix that defense.. Riley is an offensive genius and a great QB coach. Don’t forget, he had 3 QB’s….2 of which won the Heisman and one who finished 2nd and is now a star in the NFL and all of those 3 were transfers who didn’t make it at other programs. That’s not to mention Caleb who also won the Heisman under Riley. He’s always going to have an outstanding offense. All he has to do is fix that defense. It would help if SC would fix their NIL.

      I can be one of the nicest guys in the world and also have the worst thoughts which can be very mean and cut throat. Right now, I SC has become disenchanted in my eyes. I hope for the best each and every day for the football program and all others, but to see it so mismanaged and run down, not only is it heart breaking but also embarrassing for the players, former players, alumni, and fans. 14 years of failure tarnished SC. and truthfully, I do hope Riley does see his errors and change things up that will make the team much better. All I want is to see SC win Rose Bowls, Heisman’s, and National Championships, and seeing the players and coaches happy and appreciative for each other.
