An Overdue Transfer

Darwin Barlow entered the transfer portal yesterday. No surprise there. He was underutilzed and needed to get out of USC.

The question is why didn’t Lincoln Riley know how to use Barlow?

Was it because Barlow was a powerful, conventional back? The kind of guy who would get you a first down in a short-yardage situation instead of being an Air Raid back?

The stats show Barlow was more than a powerful runner. He averaged 6.0 yards per carry last year and 10.1 yards in very limited appearances.

Maybe he wasn’t the receiver MarShawn Lloyd and Austin Jones were. Who knows?

But he’s was definitely someone who could have helped the team. Air Raid coaches tend to be picky about their tailbacks, however. Barlow would have been better off never coming to USC.

  4. Fact is with an unmangeable 75 to 85 players on the SC roster at any one time, and that each of these players was the ‘Big Man’ at their high school, means there are a lot of “wasted” players’ talents on any football team wanting development.
    “I’m just as good as that guy” is a common refrain

    1. Sometimes I wonder if the jealous underlings are the problem, but then I wake up and realize they are easier to fire. Maybe Stinkin Lincoln is afraid of personal conflict.

      2. By the time USC played UCLA the team had quit on Riley. Maybe it’s temporary. Maybe things will get back to normal when and if we get a first magnitude defensive coordinator. But anybody could tell from the surly attitudes exhibited in player interviews during bruin week the players were disgusted with the program.

    4. You all going on like a good D coordinator is a fix for all the team’s ills. USC hasn’t had a good defense since Pete left. Think for a minute, what hasn’t changed? Through all the different coaches on both sides of the ball – there’s one thing that hasn’t changed.

      3. They’ve all been stats crazy former QBs of moderate success. Ed doesn’t count as he was interim. USC has been more focused on numbers and breaking records. Matt Barkley 7 tds vs Colorado. I mean, Lane broke Marquis Lee – he’s out of the league as far as I know. They’ve never cared about defense, it doesn’t get the same amount of eyeballs a flashy offense gifs. They’re ironically, in that Norm got run off by Pete for taking too much of the attention b/c they lucked into Reggie & LenDale at the same time, they’ve all been chasing the ghost of those Norm’s offenses.

I remember announcers saying [at the very end of the Holiday bowl against Wisconsin], “This is the final drive Cody Kessler has waited for his entire career —a chance to show he can do more than chalk up stats in meaningless games.” Cody immediately threw an interception to kill the drive and lose the game.

    1. I hope you’re right on that. If UCLA finished 11th in the nation on defense, that is great being that the Pac-12 was the best offensive conference in the nation last year. If he finished 11th at UCLA, he would have finished higher at SC since SC had much better players than UCLA, offensively and defensively

      13. Coaches generally spend, on average, about 2 to 3 years at each school(if they are good up and coming coaches) and then they move on. Every time they move on, some other school is poaching them.

      2. If that is true then SC got a good one. UCLA was 11th in the nation in total defense and 2nd in rushing defense. That’s hard to do in the best offensive conference in the nation. I’m still a little skeptical. I’ll believe it when I see it.

  16. WA defeats OR… in bound to the Rose Bowl to face MI should MI defeat IA tomorrow 1st round of playoffs.

    Congrats all around in making Riley ‘wake up’ per the hire of Anthony Lynn from bel-air tech…..Jen Cohen’s mgmt is evident in this move and her intent is now making Riley understand what is expected next year….he handles the offense and he no longer ignores the defense by relegating it to his ‘friend’.
