Nebraska DC Tony White Gets Raise, But USC Isn’t Necessarily The Reason

Nebraska announced Friday it restructured the contract of defensive coordinator Tony White, which will make him the highest-paid assistant coach in school history and third-highest-paid assistant coach in the Big Ten.

White will make $1.6 million in 2024. He was paid $1 million this past season.

Now the first instinct is to say this is because his name was mentioned as a candidate for the USC defensive coordinator’s job. But White actually interviewed for the San Diego State head-coaching position and was mentioned for the Syracuse job. And while his name was floated for USC, it’s debatable if he actually receieved any kind of offer.

It’s more likely Nebraska gave him a substantial raise because his name is coming up for multiple jobs, not just USC.

    1. Scott was overheard saying he wasn’t sure we “deserved” a full Friday edition this week…..

      1. The only way USC is going to attract a quality defensive coordinator will be if they replace the clown of a head coach that they have now

      2. I doubt if Scott thinks in terms of what we posters “deserve”
but Friday was a lot of work and he wasn’t getting enough “bites”

      3. In a way, doesn’t that amount to the same thing, John? We have failed Scott. We are being punished —and we [well, not me] deserve it….

  1. I really don’t think that any D-Coordinator worth his salt is going to work for CLR because CLR will never be fully invested in defense. If he was, then someone worth a damn would’ve been hired already. This is the price you pay for embracing the Air-Raid Offense.

  2. All the good candidates are saying no to Riley. It is very possible that the next season is a complete mess again. I wonder if Riley is giving the new DC full reign, or if DCs feel like the job is not a place they can succeed.

Boy, Riley’s star has just plummeted.

      1. All I got from that was SC “has to do their process” and it must be done with “diligence,” while extrapolating that she intended anything by mentioning the conference championship games.

She is a better talker than Bon-Bon or Wiley
but the words all come out of their mouths about the same

      2. I interpret Jen’s remarks as “we’ll have extra candidates to look at soon” —-not “we have somebody lined up who needs to coach one more game before we announce anything.”
Anyway, we’ll know soon enough if we’re getting a playoff DC to come in as our DC —- I’m guessing that’s not gonna happen.

  3. If any credible defensive coordinator comes to USC it will be because of a money grab. The challenges of the Big Ten, the lack of talent , and most of all, the soft culture produced by Riley and his finesse offense will make it a no win situation, and perhaps even a one and done

  4. Upon further reflection maybe the SC Defensive coach job is a plum
with a “What have we to lose” Trojan attitude taking the heat off,
and a way out of dusty Texas or Alabama

      1. They like to knock Mike Gundy in the media but that guy is one of the best coaches in the nation.

  5. It’s going to work for all you naysayers it’s going to work. Riley has just experienced what all that rise experience – abject failure. He knows it’s all his and he knows he has to overcome ntl’ perception of the ‘berezina’ this past season is…AD Jan Cohen is also focused on succeeding.

Most of you remind me a lot of OH St. or Red Sox fans…..all in or all out….we’re on the right path.

    1. Lincoln Riley is still going to have to change the way he coaches or it’s not going to matter. If Riley doesn’t start playing complementary football it going to be the same as it ever was. You can’t be giving the ball back to your opponent and expect your defense to hold up forever.
