One Defense Of Lincoln Riley Falls Apart

One defense I heard about Lincoln Riley from some USC diehards (including fanboy media) was that he inherited a 4-8 team and won 11 games and it’s a long rebuild following Clay Helton.

Well, look at Kalen DeBoer. He inherited a 4-8 team, has gone 24-2 and is 9-0 against ranked opponents. And he is going to the College Football Playoff.

      I would say Wiles inherited a bigger mess left over from Ton-o-Hel than this Washington coach inherited

      1. If you look at the Huskies coach, his past record is phenomenal. I often said that we should hire him but then when we got LR I was more than happy and still am though 2023 turned out to be a waste but that was Grenchs fault. He has 3 areas he has to fix:
        1) The defense(which is in the process of being fixed)
        2) The O-Line
        3) The NIL

      3. Keeping Grench is probably the biggest mistake of his career. It hurt his reputation as a coach. But he is a good OC and you can always get a good DC if you are SC. The problems are still very fixable.

      2. DeBor is one of the best coaches in the nation. We could have gotten him but like Petersen, we passed him up and Washington got him.

    3. Stars don’t equate with talent. Heck the ranking services can’t agree on what the accurate number of stars is from player to player. Helton left a ton of 4&5 star players who were recruited lazily, meaning nobody went to see if the evaluation was warranted. So yes Riley inherited many highly rated players, but most turned out to duds and head cases. Remember the recruiters were planting for this season and beyond. Riley brought a couple of duds with him too. Mario Williams was still giving ground (if or when) after a catch he was responsible for many missed first downs.
      This fact doesn’t excuse Riley for keeping a moron (and here I denigrate morons) as his defensive coordinator. There will never be an excuse for that other than hubris and just plain vanity.

I think Board Coward, Zero Football IQ Charlie Bucket the UCLA Fan aka Cowardly Gabby/TebowObama is monetarily motivated. At least that would make some kind of sense — otherwise, the course of conduct we’re seeing is completely irrational.

  5. Washington has a Defense. USC did not have 1 against Washington USC did not make the defensive Stops when they need to….also against Oregon. Only losing by 10 points while playing shiitty. Defense. Poor ly not Tackling how many missed tackles did USC have. That is pathetic coaching. Because of Grinch. Everyone knows this….USC must Recruit Big Defensive and offensive Lineman ..get a top Quarterback in the transfer portal. The number 1 think USC needs is to Run the dam Football… Need to have a running game… So your passing game is easy off setting the other teams defense…
