USC Sunday Buzz: Lincoln Riley Visits Transfer QB

So the answer to whether Lincoln Riley can resist taking another QB is a resounding “no.”

Riley visited Kansas State QB Will Howard on Saturday in Manhattan, Kan., according to Derek Young of On3.

This is revealing on many levels. It shows Riley doesn’t think Miller Moss or Malachi Nelson are the answer next season. It would be interesting to hear what they think, especially Moss.

It also shows Riley, feeling the heat from his 7-5 season, wants a transfer QB for that brutal schedule USC plays in 2024.

And finally, for the 2-3 fans who didn’t know, it shows Caleb Williams is not returning.

Howard passed for 2,643 yards with 24 TD’s and 10 interceptions in 2023.

“I don’t understand why a guy like Lincoln Riley, who needs a defensive coordinator, doesn’t call Phil Parker, the defensive coordinator at Iowa, and just literally bring a Brink’s truck and back it up at his house in Iowa City,” Johnson said.

Johnson apparently didn’t realize Riley hired a defensive coordinator on Friday.

  1. Bringing in another transfer QB is not going to solve USC’s major flaw, which is lack of physicality on both lines of scrimmage. If you watched Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, FSU, that was big boy football, while Okie State, a USC clone, got their ass handed to them. Offensive ego maniacs never win major titles.       6. LR doesn’t run an air raide….at least not like Mike Leach ran it. At Oklahoma he ran the ball 55% of the time during his 8 years at the school. From 2015 to 2021 Oklahoma finished 22,18, 27,11,14, 49 and 39 in the nation in rushing. Those aren’t the statistics of an air raid team. Maybe having Kingsberry and his influence has been a negative for the offense. But LR is not an air raid guy.

      9. LR has to get back to what he used to do at Oklahoma. In 7 years at Oklahoma, he ran the ball 55% of the time. In 2022, he only ran the ball about 47% and this year he ran the ball about 44.5%. These last 2 years could have been because of Caleb changing the play at the LOS to throw it. The problem in 2023 could have also been Caleb or maybe the weak O-Line or maybe even the influence of Kliff Kingsbury who is more of an air raid person than LR. One way or another he has to get back to the way he ran the offense at Oklahoma. Getting rid of Caleb may turn out to be a positive. He had too much power to run the offense under LR. Also, it might be a benefit to get rid of Kingsbury.

      1. I doubt that is true – Riley is strictly on his own – this is his to either fix or leave it 2 years hence because that is all he has to right the ship – he lost this entire year he did no one else it was his own making.

        If anything he can ill afford anymore ‘yes men’ as such I anticipate a complete overhaul by Riley and fast. If USC fails to make the expanded 12 team playoff cut by this time 24 mos hence Lincoln Riley will be gone and he knows it. That is why I believe he is going to move in a new direction he’s never encountered before – relying on others especially when he feels threatened by them. This is going to be good for all.

      4. He’s not invulnerable at all. Any QB who runs the ball 97 times for 455 yards(not including the sacks) is vulnerable. He’s as vulnerable as any running back. Having an extra running back in their backfield should really help their running game but they still need an O-Line.

Somehow they would have found a way to plant an SEC team in the playoffs. This whole playoff thing is crooked. It is slanted towards the SEC.     2. FSU still won all of their games and their conference. They had a QB in concussion protocol and he’s going to be back for the bowl games. It’s an absolute farce to have excluded an undefeated Power 5 champ. Alabama was soundly beaten by Texas. Why should they have to play them twice? What kind of trash is this? The referees in Saturday’s game were obviously not calling Alabama for pass interference and assorted other blatant penalties. It’s rigged. The SEC has always been a joke with a dozen teams that have zero chance of winning the conference. It’s a conference of backwater teams that have not been competitive. They are content to get blown out repeatedly and settle for the revenue from the conference. Alabama never has a tough schedule, and on top of that they play a 2-A school in the middle of the season. The selection of Alabama is completely corrupt. The NCAA needs to change the academic standards so that schools with abysmally low academic standards like Alabama are not given an unfair advantage

      2. I will agree that I am intrigued with Will Howard. Caleb Williams gained 394 yards rushing in 130 carries(minus the sacks). This guy gained 455 yard in 97 carries. It is really like having another running back in the backfield. I’m beginning to be won over with the idea of bringing this guy in. I’m starting to hope that they get him. But I do think that Moss and Nelson will leave so they will need one more QB.

  9. Lynn is a great hire. He’s was a semi finalist for the award for the best assistant coach. He’s from a football family – his Dad is the assistant coach for the 49’ers and he has 9 years of NFL staff experience. I remember him at Penn State and his play recognition as a Cornerback was excellent. Maybe he lacked the top speed required in the NFL. As a coach at UCLA, he did a heck of a job in a very short time. We need a guy like this. He played high school football in Texas, played in the Big Ten and was a rising coaching talent in the NFL. I’m happy!
