Caleb Williams Out Of Holiday Bowl

This is not exactly news but Lincoln Riley confirmed Caleb Williams is out of the Holiday Bowl. So Williams is not going to pull a Bo Nix.

What exactly is Miller Moss auditioning for if he starts the Holiday Bowl? Riley’s already visited Will Howard of Kansas State and wants a quarterback from the transfer portal.

This officially closes Williams’ USC career. He is the best QB in USC history. No one was more talented.

But Riley squandered his talent by surrounding him with sandcastle defenses the past 2 seasons that kept USC from being a College Football Playoff team.

    1. Why the fuck should Miller Moss do Lincoln Riley any favors by running for his life and taking a beating in the Holiday bowl if Riley has no faith in him to lead the Trojans next season?

Miller Moss should tell Lincoln Riley to go fuck himself and then hit the portal

      1. Lincoln Riley fucked over the entire team when he decided to throw away this season by keeping those idiots Alex Grinch, Shaun Nua and Donte Williams on staff.

None of the Trojan players owe Lincoln Riley a fucking thing!

      2. Lincoln Riley is essentially telling Miller Moss that he has no future as a starting QB at USC, but that he wants Moss to take a beating vs Louisville in the Holiday bowl, take one for the team.

Fuck that, Moss should have hit the portal yesterday

If the argument is talent…think Palmer would be the one.
On field performance…Leinart, hands down (with McDonald and Haden for show and place)…

But for the sake of argumentation, CW is comparable to Peete (great performance, some team success, not surrounded by the talent and coaching the others above benefitted from).

      1. I disagree!……. Leinart and Palmer are what would be described as pocket passers with limited athleticism and mobility. On the other hand, Caleb has a better arm with multiple release points and angles and is also more athletic and mobile.

What really separated him from the two you mentioned was the ability to move the chains with his running. …….just my opinion!

      2. I’m almost always fine with diverging opinions/pov’s …
And I’ll grant that CW was certainly far more mobile than the earlier generation pocket passers (but note that was the style that was played when they played)…
He did not have a better arm than Palmer – Palmer had one of the strongest arms in football history … not even a comparison between the two. Lots of people had better arms than Leinart, but he was absolutely adroit at putting the ball on target to the right target on time, which is what he was asked to do.
USC had a QB similar to, and maybe could have been even better if he played today (Vince Evans…JD Booty was actually fairly similar …and Pete Beathard was a similar type back in the ’60s).

      3. Let me counter your argument, if Caleb had played college football back in
Palmer’s era with the skillset he currently possesses, he would have run circles around Palmer. IMO, Caleb has the stronger arm with the MUCH quicker release.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Nope! haha (again cool with disagreements and appreciated)
Palmer was end line to end line – CW isn’t close in arm strength
And CW would have been benched under Pete and Chow for failure to run the offense (to much ad libbing).
But again – he plays to the style that is played today – maybe he would have been far more disciplined and even more effective playing on those infinitely more talented and better coached teams.
So great discussion and appreciate your pov.

      5. What good is arm strength if your release is slow? The best QBs in the game don’t have the strongest arms they have mobility with the quickest release…… everything Palmer was not ……do you watch much NFL?

      6. I have watched more pro football than most going back to the 1970s…
Quick release is indeed vital (Dan Marino put that to rest)
Mobility was nice, but only now is essential
Arm strength is essential (and Palmer did have a long stroke – but he QB’d the Bengals and Cardinals to division titles and not that long ago – that is the resume of Houdini).
The greatest all-around combinations were Staubach and Montana…Mahomes in the present…and several others can also be added to the discussion no doubt.
        Great discussion.

      7. Purely from a talent standpoint, not counting wins and losses, Aaron Rodgers would be my pick as the greatest. He checks all the boxes for me. Here’s the play that changed Palmer’s future in the NFL. Today a hit like that is a penalty with a potenial fine to the defender

        PS….great discussion, yes!

One of the greatest audibles in SC history was when he spotted the man to man coverage in the Bush Push Notre Dame game. He put the ball in a very tight window and I still don’t know how it got into the hands of the receiver for a huge gain

      1. You’re totally clueless as to what it takes to be a modern-day successful QB at the college level and more so at the NFL level. You’re just another armchair QB with a low football IQ……If Palmer was playing college football today he would look like a turtle back there. He was constantly getting sacked in the NFL due to a lack of mobility.

Caleb was blessed with great talent and betrayed by the coaches and rest of the team.

      1 Heisman
      0 conference titles
      0 Rose (other) Bowl wins
      1-1 vs ND & ucla

      1. Caleb was the greatest “talent” to play at USC but lacked the supporting cast to nail down accomplishments at the team level.

For example, Pac12 championship game. Caleb gets us up 17-0 and plays like Superman. Then one play changes everything. Caleb is down to one leg giving all he can and needs the defense to generate some key stops. His talent could not overcome the shortcoming of the defense that night even though he kept us in the game into the 4th quarter on basically one leg.

Would Moss have been able to do the same on two good legs?

But watch, I bet Moss has a career game (which won’t be hard since he hasn’t really played ever) and dutifully remains a Trojan as a backup watching Nelson “hit the road”

He didn’t change 55% of the plays before the snap the way Caleb did—- probably pissing off the entire offense who wanted to run Riley’s offense, not Caleb’s [since they could see doing it Caleb’s way wasn’t working].

You listen to these players talk in the interviews and they keep talking about “the brotherhood” and “I have to support my brothers”. What they mean is “I have to support my brothers until it is not in my interest to support my brothers, then to hell with my brothers”. That’s why one famous person called the younger generation “the me generation”. It’s a good description of them.

  11. Actually, I would say that Caleb was squandered by an offensive line that was porous, a run attack that was inconsistent and offensive play-calling that is mediocre at best.

I have this foggy idea that the influence of Kliff Kingsbury has alot to do with the failures of the offense, but have zero proof of that. I just think KK encourages Riley to revert to a schoolyard form of football.

If USC had been executing on the offensive side consistently, they might have been the team that won all their games with one-score differences, instead of UW.

    1. You do have proof, gametv: before Kliff, 11-1 regular season. After Kliff, 7-5 regular season. Lots of play changes 8 seconds before snap. Lots of show-offy sidearm passes by Caleb when normal throws would do just fine.
