Lincoln Riley Wants New Defense . . . Two Years Too Late

Lincoln Riley kind of threw Alex Grinch under the bus today.

“The size and style we play up front was No. 1,” Riley said about what he wanted from a new defensive coordinator.

Riley also said he didn’t want someone who would try to force a scheme on the players but wanted someone who could adapt to the personnel and the opponent.

“This is a very different defensive system than we’ve been running previously,” Riley said.

So if that is all true, here is a simple question: Why did Riley bring Grinch in the first place? Why didn’t he hire someone who met the above qualifications two years ago? It might have meant a College Football Playoff appearance.

    Oh well, 4-8 next year and probably the same in 2025 and he’ll be out the door and USC can start all over again.

Kiffin was not dealing with anything because Pat Haden had appealed the sanctions until 2011 and Kiffin had signed 31 players in 2011 and had 75 players on the roster when the season began in 2012. USC was allowed to sign no more than 15 players for its 2012, 2013 and 2014 recruiting classes but were going to have a small recruiting class in 2012 regardless.

        Sark and Hugs were the one most affected by the sanctions.

  9. Lincoln Riley needs an advisor, someone to advise him to shut up. The more he talks, the more he gives himself away as being a fraud. He never says the right things, especially after a loss. Did he say he doesn’t want the new defensive coordinator to force a scheme on players that won’t fit it? Does that mean he won’t take that Mike Leach finesse offense into the Big Ten, where they will physically dominate the line of scrimmage, and run the ball down his Trojans throats?

Just listened to Riley’s phone call on Youtube and he was pretty clear that the goal was to build the best defensive staff, regardless of whether that was coaches currently at USC or not, so seems like it is completely open to replace guys if they are not perceived by D’Anton as being the best.

    2. Nice article, although it is a soft ball pitch. It is really difficult to tell if the defensive coaches are a bunch of rubes, or if it was fully Grinch’s ridiculous leadership and schemes.

      Can someone answer a question for me? USC doesnt have a safeties coach nor a QB coach, nor a special teams coach and the o-line coach is the OC (or the head coach is the OC). They have an extra receivers coach. That seems to me like they are at least one-two coaches shy, what am I missing about the coaching math here?

      3. The problem I had with Caleb is that I’m suspicious that he has hindered LR from running the offense he ran at Oklahoma. When he was the OC at East Carolina, he definitely threw the ball more and ran the ball less. That all changed when he came to Oklahoma. His first year at Oklahoma(as OC) he ran the ball 63% of the time. The offense that LR has run at SC is not the same offense he ran in his 7 years at Oklahoma. At Oklahoma he ran the ball 55% of the time in 7 years at OU.. His offense at SC has not ran the ball nearly as much. LR sends in a play and Caleb changes it on the LOS. LR gets criticized for not running the ball more. I’d like to know how many running plays that he sent in and Caleb changed the play on the LOS to a pass. Another factor could be Kliff Kingbury. Whatever the case, he’s not running the same offense that was so successful at OU. LR allowed Caleb too much authority to do his own thing, especially in 2023.
