Morning Buzz: USC Didn’t Break Bank For Coach

Some people have made a big deal out of D’Anton Lynn getting $2 million to go from UCLA to USC. Do they realize that is what Alex Grinch made at USC?

If USC had hired someone like Jim Leonhard, it would have had to pay more than $2 million. So this isn’t some big salary overhaul at USC. It’s status quo.

  • Someone asked me if D’Anton Lynn would coach the defense in the Holiday Bowl? My response: Why would Lynn want his first impression at USC to be coaching the nation’s worst defense after 12 bowl practices? No thanks.
  • Washington State QB Cam Ward is being mentioned as a possible USC target. Every QB will probably get mentioned with USC at some point.
  • MarShawn Lloyd declared for the NFL Draft on Sunday. Was there ever any other possibility? When he transferred to USC, I assumed it was a one-and-done deal.
  • I can’t say I understand the transfer portal. Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel just entered it. If he isn’t going pro, why leave a program that gave him every opportunity for success the past 2 years?
  • USC men’s water polo hosted the NCAA championships over the weekend. The Trojans lost to Cal in the semifinals. It’s definitely no longer the Jovan Vavic Era.

  1. I think D’Anton Lynn should coach USC in the 12 Holiday bowl practices and in the game. Why not use the practices and game to evaluate your players. And perhaps he will inspire a few players like Raejon Davis, Gentry, Feguon, (?) who would otherwise leave through the portal to stay. It is not about Lynn’s record at this point, it is about improving the team.

    1. I think it helps 2024 team morale more if Lynn doesn’t get stuck with the results of the Holiday Bowl —he’d be working with a terrible staff.
      Watch practices, evaluate talent —but don’t let your name get associated with Grinch’s defense —and that’s what it will be with only 12 practices. You can’t change schemes in that amount of time.

    4. Watching Ga v Ala on Saturday, highlighted just how far we have to go. New DC, nice start. But if that’s all, it’s a bit like rearranging deck chairs on the titanic.

      I’m 78, been going to USC games since I was 8. My room mate in med school was a 3 year stater at guard. We need to emphasize strength, toughness, agility on both lines. Finesse is no longer enough. I watched the AlavGa game twice, watching the line play, the tackling. Personally I think the DC hire is a good start.

      The definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. We need mean. We need big. We need, simply, what we don’t have.

      Just once before I die, I’d love to see the dominance we enjoyed during the Pete Carroll years.

      2. When it comes to Howard….at first I didn’t want him but I’m starting to have a paradyme shift in my thinking. This guy can run like a running back. It’s like having another running back in the backfield. Without the lost yardage on sacks, he would have been our 2nd leading running back(ahead of Austin Jones) if he played for us. He’s also a quality passer who threw for 2600 yards and that is for a team that ran the ball 56% of the time. I hope they get him.

  6. I’m still waiting to see any real changes coming from Riley. While I am fine with the DC hiring, it is a big risk and if Riley doesnt make major changes to himself and the program overall, this wont work out. I’m thinking they will be better, but not close to championship level. Still not seeing Riley open up to the media or act as a real leader to the team, maybe it is all happening behind closed doors.

    Kalen Deboer just knows how to win. That is a coach. With his success this year, they will become a much bigger recruiting rival.

    Riley’s star might be on the way down.

      8. I can’t argue that Brady didn’t make a difference. Belichicks success did seem to start when Brady became his QB. Also you had the kickers the kickers(especially that one….I can’t remember his name). He must have won 2 or 3 Super Bowls on last second field goals. But even with Brady and the kickers, 6 superbowl championships and 9 superbowl appearances…..that seems like a whole lot of success for one of the greatest non-people persons who ever lived, if greatness is all about being a people person. Even Brady couldn’t stand Belichick.

  12. Wolf is right. Hands down Caleb Williams is the best quarterback to ever play at SC. And I seen them all from Troy Winslow in the mid 60’s till today. Those other quarterbacks had great running games around them and good to very good defenses around them. If the Trojans had at least a Justin Wilcox led type of defense around the past couple of years this team would have made the playoffs.
    That said, they have to go after Dillion Gabriel if they want to have a chance in the Big Ten next season. He’s the best of the bunch right now.

      I remember one game where Wilcox was the decordinator for SC and a rb just kept running and the offense kept running over SC’s defense and him saying that he had no clue how to stop them. He will be a good coach but I think he is still in the learning stage and he needs recruits. Thank you.

      1. Dillon Gabriel has immense talent …but he’s listed in Oklahoma’s press guide as “just over 200 pounds & one inch taller than Sneezy” —- given the nature of USC’s O-Line, Howard is probably the better fit for the Trojans [if we can get him].

MG-I attended KU giving OU their first loss this season … Gabriel isn’t a bad QB, but he isn’t stellar … small stature and not a particularly strong arm … team did follow him (ie he appeared to be in control and have the confidence of his teammates) … Howard at KSU I also saw in person … he was more impressive … games against Texas for each I think kind of indicative of what you would get … both are good, and neither are going to be the “do everything” type, so might be better in the long term for the program (ie make the coaches coach and not leave it in the hands of a single player) … whomever it is, the O-line must be way better …
