Morning Buzz: Another QB On USC Radar

I said yesterday there was no way new USC defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn would coach the Holiday Bowl and now we have a report confirming that.

Lynn would be a fool to coach the Holiday Bowl. He needs months to change the culture. He needs to get rid of defensive coaches. His stock is at an all-time high right now with USC fans. Why tarnish that by facing motivated Louisville with a laughingstock of a defense.

Oh, and he would be coaching a USC team with a backup QB. The list of reasons for him to skip the game are endless.

  • Quarterback Dequan Finn of Toledo is in the transfer portal. The MAC Player of the Year has passed for 7,074 yards; rushed for 1,840 yards and scored 88 TDs in his career. Yes, USC is interested in Finn. He’s the type of QB Lincoln Riley likes. It’s going to be fascinating to see which QB commits first to the Trojans.
  • USC opened a 3.5-point favorite over Louisville in the Holiday Bowl. Then it was announced Caleb Williams would not play. The Trojans are now 7.5-point underdogs per BetOnline.
  • Defensive tackle De’Jon Benton has entered the transfer portal. He had 12 tackles and five tackles for a loss last season with 1.5 sacks.

  4. Dejon Benton showed flashes last year – 5 tackles for loss in limited playing time. He has good size. This will make a poor interior run defense even worse. We need big bodies. The 270 pound interior guys would cut it against Michigan.

You have a ton of teams that are already in the Big Ten that are big and fast. So we can do the same thing. It’s not optional. It’s non-negotiable. You don’t get an opinion. You get to lift.   9. If you’re a top flight high school QB why would you want to come to USC with CLR when you know damn good and well he’s always going for the flavor of the month when it comes to transfer portal QB’s? Take Miller Moss for example. I can just see Moss meeting with CLR…

      1. Actually, with todays transfer portal, unless you are assured a starting job with a power 5 school, it’s probably better to go to a smaller school like Liberty, make your mark there and then transfer to a bigger school when you have become a star.

Then there is this (which was inevitable … although it now will spill into the political arena, given it will at many schools implicate state/taxpayer money … of course, as if paying coaches $10M/per annum doesn’t!)… the sooner they get it set up geographically as a highly promoted (since some would be turned off by having it drilled into them that this is the equivalent of minor league baseball or hockey) minor league/feeder system (with sponsor and media outlet tie-ins being the differential for the top shelf programs), the better.

  10. We keep reading about Lincoln Riley hitting the transfer portal for quarterbacks , which tells me he’s right on track for another disappointing season in 2024. Does he even know how to recruit high school players and develop them? He’s never acknowledge the line of scrimmage weakness that has haunted USC for over a decade. He should be in the homes of 5 star lineman not quarterbacks, because that’s where his biggest challenge is going to be in the Big Ten.

  14. I thought 7000 yards in a year, but then found out that is his total over three years. Last year 2,657 yards and 22 touchdowns off of 63.4 percent passing. Not so great for the competition at Toledo.

    Not a homerun, but if he wants to compete for the spot….
