USC Morning Buzz: Some Lincoln Riley Facts

It’s crazy that USC had a generational QB who won the Heisman Trophy and did not win a bowl game with Caleb Williams.

Oklahoma won a bowl game with Caleb Williams. And he was a true freshman. With Lincoln Riley.

Maybe SportSource Analytics, who Coach Bohn and Brandon Sosna hired to recommend Riley, can provide some data to show how pathetic this is. Or some analytics on how a coach could have three Heisman winners and no national championships.

Riley, by the way, is 1-4 in bowl games with a tough Holiday Bowl approaching.

  • Michael Jackson III entered the transfer portal. Wide receivers seem to have a hard time flourishing with Lincoln Riley. Even Jordan Addison’s numbers dropped when he came to USC and no one has done better than him under Riley with the Trojans.
  • I said USC’s defense will be better next season with D’Anton Lynn. But no one wants to point out a few things. UCLA did not play Washington or Oregon. Remember how a few weeks ago Lincoln Riley admitted USC benefitted from a soft schedule in 2022 because it did not play Washington or Oregon.

I could add that UCLA played Utah with Nate Johnson at QB. And that UCLA had Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Laiatu Latu.

        Cr and I were at USC together. He later asked me to speak in his High School class after he started teaching. We worked at the post office Xmas holodays to make extra money. Big heart, kind and smart. modest and down to earth. I am sad to hear about his passing. He and Jon Arnett were on the team together. I did ask him one day, Why are they playing Jon and not you ?and he said” I do not know”. Wille wood and Lou Byrd were also on that team. He also threw a pass several times and I said to him after one game”that was the ugliest pass I had ever seen ” and he re plied “well it got there didn’t it?

  6. I think it’s crazy that Lincoln Riley is going into his third season and has not displayed any recruiting skills, or player development. All I read about are players out of the transfer portal. Is a matter of fact, the college football world said he had the best class of transfers… Hmm 🤔 But so far Riley has proven to be nothing but a fraud of a head coach. His offensive coordinating is without a doubt creative, and very effective against inferior opponents. The Mike Leach philosophy will never produce the culture needed for the Big Ten

Ultimately, the current problems with the USC football program does go back to LR not Grench, because everyone in the world told him to get rid of Grench(he should never have brought him over in the first place)and he didn’t listen. But that in no ways shows that he is not an outstanding coach(at least as far as football is concerned). It just shows that he made a bad decision that has really hurt his reputation as a coach. If he is really an outstanding football coach, he will overcome one or two bad decision.

    3. There is 2 ways that LR needs to change.
      1) He needs to devote himself to defense(which he says that he has done)
      2) He needs to get back to coaching the offense the way he did at Oklahoma.
      This is not the offense that he ran at Oklahoma. This is more of a Mike Leach offense that he ran when he was OC at East Carolina.
