USC Morning Buzz: All-American Madness

Wide receiver/return specialist Zacariah Branch has become the USC football program’s first true freshman to be a first-team All-American, according to the university.

This means he will get a plaque outside the McKay Center alongside the other football All-Americans.

Now the team he made is the Pro Football Focus All-American team. Is it legit? Maybe. Maybe not. But USC recognizes every All-American team.

It currently has players with plaques at the McKay Center because they made the Sports on Earth All-American team (a defunct website); the College Sports Madness All-American team (could be defunct) and the College Insiders All-American team. I can only imagine what Jon Arnett would say about that.

Meanwhile, defensive tackle Dan Ficca (1958-60) does not receive a plaque because he made the then-prestigious UPI All-American second team. Not the first team. Some system . . .

  • TV icon Norman Lear died Wednesday at age 101. His influence was so vast that CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX and The CW simulcasted an on-air in memoriam card at 8 p.m. ET/PT honoring the late legendary TV writer and producer.
  • There is a USC connection. The Norman Lear Center is based at USC and in 2008, Lear received a honorary degree at USC.

    1. I bet Riley told Branch, Duce Robinson, and Raleek Brown during the recruiting process that they would be featured in his offense with multiple plays and formations to isolate them. Agree with MG. This hasn’t really happened. Branch is special. He should be getting 15 touches a game or more.

      6. I agree. Everytime USC is contending for a certain player the first thing that I do is look to see if Oregon is one of the contenders. If Oregon is in there, then forget that guy. Just move on to the next guy. Oregon is going to get him unless some other school outbids Oregon. Oregon will offer him big bucks. SC will offer him a shiny new surfboard and a trip to the beach.

    3. Jake: Riley did bring in a solid freshman o line class. And Sam Green and Elijah Hughes look like good prospects on the d line. I also like the two freshman rush ends and Christian Pierce as a safety. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to get them ready for the BIG next year. May need another year of development.
